Hey guys. I have developed a game as part of my Thesis work and I need people to play it and fill up the corresponding questionnaire. I would really appreciate it if you can take the time. All information gathered will be completely confidential. The more the better, as it will give me a broader set of data to work with.
Constructive criticism welcome…be gentle as I am a novice! ;) (1 module of Unity3D in semester 1 of my course)
Thanks in advance and if you have any questions feel free to contact me.
As this is my 1st post I am not allowed to add a link so I will add it after this post… -

Hey kr0!
Just completed it there! First of all, well done on the game. I know I wouldnt be able to do as much with unity and I’m sure it took some time and effort!!
Secondly, my view of the game is from a perspective of a programmer and games enthusiast so you can take that into account! I’m a student too, just starting out on programming games.
So here’s my general .02c:
What I liked:
*Character Design
*Animations of Character
*Level Progression
*Environment BackdropCriticisms:
*Awkward Jump Mechanic
*Challenges in game are all timing related
*No Idea what was going on when I first started
*No emotional relation(Didnt notice it until the survey mentioned it)Recommendations:
*An intro to describe goals, characters etc.
*Increase Player movement Speed
*More challenges that aren’t ‘platform’/timing relatedHope this helps. Let me know if you need further explanation or help :)

Thanks FunkeeFresh, I appreciate you taking the time to play the game and give me feedback. Your advice is helpful. What course are you doing and is games development a part of it?

That questionnaire is pretty punishing: I’d consider cutting it down if you want to get a meaningful number of responses.
I was harsh when I filled it in (but I did fill it in; all of it- so I’m probably easily identified from this response :)), so I wanted to add some notes by way of clarification (hopefully you won’t get too disheartened; it’s something to say that what you’ve done is worth constructive criticism). There’s obvious technical competence on show; the game basically works, looks uncluttered, leads the eye well towards objectives and has a few nice aesthetic flourishes.
That said, the character/camera control feels off; it’s either too floaty or too leaden, and having become accustomed to how big budget character based action games do things it really sticks out for me. Have you seen the Unity3D ‘Lerpz Escapes’ demo? That has quite a nice control implementation I think; the camera follows the character without having to rotate around him on the spot, and the jumping feels quite snappy. It’s on their website in the resources section.

Thanks barrettcolin, I know the Questionnaire is very lengthy and because of that has probably turned some people off. In hindsight I would definitely make it more concise. It doesn’t matter if you were harsh, honest responses is what I need, if everybody said it was great just to appease me then I wouldn’t have any meaningful data. As with FunkeeFresh, your encouragement is very appreciated and also your honesty. I appreciate you taking the time and offering your advice.
If you don’t mind me asking are you working in the Gaming industry? -

I played the game and filled in the accompanying questionnaire; as has already been stated, I recommend you abbreviate the questionnaire. Most people will not fill out the whole thing as it stands now.
Some strong points:
The character controls are very fluid. The animations are smooth.Weak points:
I don’t want to be too harsh, but the game has no aesthetic consistency. that is to say, I don’t feel like I’m in a homogeneous world, but in a world constructed of bits of other, unrelated worlds. If this is an area in which you would like to improve, I recommend you study visual rhetoric, semiotics, colour theory and the concept of gestalt. That should help you to pull things together a bit more in the future. -

Yeah ‘FunkeeFresh’, I know some guys in college doing Computer and Electronic Engineering, they developed their own AI for an XNA game and had a playoff to see whose bot survived the longest, good clean fun…

Thanks for the feedback Richard. I know the Questionnaire is very long and it is something I will definitely consider in my future research. I will look into those topics you suggested. That game development course looks very interesting by the way…
