Hi,
is anyone familiar with any courses, degrees etc or know why there are not any in the Connacht Galway area, all other provinces in Ireland other than this one seem to have Uni or College courses. I live in Galway & this is why I am asking.

probably because none has sent them to us and we don’t have the manpower to keep checking them ourselves.
check out NUIG and GMIT. If you find anything do let us know.
you will find things in UL and LIT

Hi Alpha thanks for reply, sorry I should have mentioned that I have checked and rechecked and other than this 4 year degree course at NUIG [http://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/undergraduate-courses/computer-science-and-information-technology.html ] at NUIG which does gaming & design in 2nd & 4th years, there is nothing unfortunately showing up purely for gaming as is in many other parts of Ireland and Dublin.
It just surprises me as EA – Electronics Art to name one computer-gaming company is forecast to open & create 200 jobs in the Galway and yet no specific computer-gaming courses in this region.
Perhaps I may contact the different colleges in Galway to pose the question & suggestion!

yes but the EA jobs are mostly in community support, QA and localisation rather than development – so they are looking more for an interest in games and particular linguistic and other skills, not computer science or design ones…to the best of my knowledge.

We (Clane College) are looking at starting a course down there, depending on a number of factors including the level of interest & demand. If it happens, the course will be highly analogous to the one we already run in Kildare.

Hello, thank you for your reply, this is great news & students in the West & Galway region know there will most definitely be an interest & possible enough in number to have a course in computer gaming in this region. Looking at the courses that you provide at Clane College these are exactly what I am looking for, particularly the one year full time course starting Sept. 2013. Look forward to hearing further news. Tks

Pulse College and Windmill Lane are also offering a free 33 week game development and project management course to people who have been unemployed for over 1 year – See http://www.pulsecollege.eu/freecourse/
taking applications now for starting in Feb.

It’s the same for Clane College as far as I can see (1 year unemployment entry requirement)
If anyone is interested, I would like to try to get a meetup happening in Galway to work on self teaching code and moddeling/texturing. I have been engaging with corporations and politicians about it too to raise the profile of Games Development in Galway. This could then migrate to an online video chat community once people know what they want to specialise in and build team coordinated indie games for sale on steam and xbox / psn / android / ios.
I think the Games Development courses for 33 weeks are quite jam packed with a lot of information. But I also have access to some very good teaching materials I can make available to others.
Those that are interested PM me.

Leon,
If you have detail on your module descriptors etc. on the course, a web page etc. we will add it to our list of courses.
The website link is not working…you should be able to post a link after three posts?
and yes the Galway group is active..
