That is quite unusual. Its probably because they want to make sure they’re not hiring someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing.
I would be curious as to how ‘short’ the period is.

Developers are already difficult to get/attract, being in short supply and high demand. That unpaid trial period will disuade most (if not all) serious/experienced developers.

Don’t all jobs have a trial period? So both parties can see if it will work out…having an unpaid trial seems a smidge unfair.
Nice to see them hiring though :)
