heres another model im just messing about with, instead of making it purely cartoonish im just trying to make it look like it has a hint of realism and cartoonish style to it.
Anyways heres the pics.

Very nice, what 3D modelling software are you using?
-
14/07/2006 at 2:55 pm #32588AnonymousInactive
Are you using splines and surface tools for the mesh?
-
14/07/2006 at 3:19 pm #32590AnonymousInactive
Thanks,
Im using basically just a plane, with mesh smooth and symmetry thats what I started with and the entire model is just extruded and manipulated from that really with smooth set on nurms with 2 iterations. Started with the head and then moved onto building the shoulder area. When extruding I disable mesh smooth though and just work with a very basic model then reapply mesh smooth to view the results.
The package im using is 3d max 8. Its coming along good just need to work on the shoulders abit more and then Ile move onto the torso and refine some detail work on the face alittle more later on.

Heres another update,
redone an area on the neck which wasnt looking too good for awhile cuse of a mesh smoothing error, have to redo the area where the forehead meets the hair. Looks alittle strange in that area, made the cheek bones more pronouned and moved the eyes out alittle more.
Was working with materials to help make modelling it alittle more easier and found that if i used a material with more of a shine on it its easier to see the mesh errors just by even looking at the model in the perspective port.Overall its coming along ok at the moment, if i can get more time to work on it it would be better :)

Added abit more of the torso to the model, will focus on body and arms tomorrow.

Some nice modeling so far man! Well done!
But hold back on the extreme lighting for now. Just use a simple 3 point light setup with a white background to help showcase the model. I can be hard to see the detail in the model with the current lighting setups. -

More of an update, I think ure correct about the lighting setup, too over the top. lol
Heres a render anyways fixed up afew more areas.

More of an update,
I added the arm areas, still working on them but ive got the basics nailed down and am going to model maybe two seperate hands, one being his right mechanical hand which he had in episodes 2 and 3 and the other being just a regular hand, I figure the mechanical hand will add abit more detail to the model.
Still have to add that braid thing he has to his head but Ile do that as the last thing as its only a minor detail really.anyways heres the renders one of em is just me screwing about with dark lighting setups and the other is the proper one.

Had today off and got a rake of work done on the model, feet took awhile to model and still only half way done woith them so heres a pic of what Ive managed to do for today anyways.
Looking forward to modelling the mechanical hand that will be a challenge, think I might model it seperately and just attach it and modify it to fit the main model scale wise.

Redid afew minor areas that were bugging me on the face and trying to refine it further.

Looking good, what are you using a source of inspiration? Near the start reminded me very much of Jedi robes

Its actually a character from the star wars cartoon clone wars its the anakin skywalker character, In the cartoon they look really stylised and interesting looking. for reference im using a statue of the character I have and just tweaking areas and trying to blend some of the cartoony features like the eyebrows and the really over emphasised boots and robe arms and making them into a 3d style of my own really just to make it look even more crazy looking.
Texturing this will be a nightmare but Itll be worth it lol i hope

Started modelling the mechanical hand. Added alot of influence regarding the fist and fingers to the clone wars cartoon where his hand looks as ruthless as his temper in some occasions so I oversized it alittle bit just to catch the eye more.

ok more updates
Added the wrist band for his ordinary left hand , still have to add the ponytail and braid to his hair but that shouldnt take long….. HOPEFULLY lol, have to add the left hand itself aswell but Im going to be taking my time on that as hands are always confusing so im gonna have to prepare myself for that and plan it abit more but ive a rough idea of what im gonna do to model it.
Heres the latest image

would it be possible to post some shots from the cartoon?? coz now i really dont know which parts are of the ‘cartoonish’ design and which are just baad… (like the bit on the front of his hips which i dont understand)
cheers – going well but i kinda dont like that ‘clayish’ apperance of character – but like i said – hard to say anything not knowing the reference..
thumbs up

More updates………………….
Updated the tabbards that are just below the hips and added more detail to make it more flowing and clothish. also got rid of afew mesh errors and tweaked it alittle more. ive tweaked this beast so much I think im beggingin to see life as vertexes lol
-
03/08/2006 at 7:12 am #32904AnonymousInactive
maybe try to detach the bit on his hips (and make the corners straight) because now it looks like some strange form of life growing form his pants – maybe try to start it somewhere closer to belt – so it looks like its connected with it (the way its probably done in the original)
the whole thing looks more like smal clay figurine – the cartoon ref is more ‘sharp’, lots of edges and stuff and i think it would be better getting closer to that kind style (am i making any sense here?? :)
cheers – and good luck
-
03/08/2006 at 12:24 pm #32919AnonymousInactive
yeah your making sense but my intention is to stalyise it as if it was kinda half 3d half animation basically make my own style with it. but your points i can see the validity in them. The model isnt really for animation its just a static pose kinda thing for showcase stuff and modeling practise really.
Ile be tweaking it around abit more anyways and see how it turns out but the lower tunic part I might remodel to a degree to get it looking more sharp looking I suppose.
Thanks man

Th emodel looks more like a moulded wax candle at the moment, even the creases are smoothed, a common feature during box modelling w/meshsmooth. Try geting in to some smoothing groups in your base model before smoothing to help define Anekin. And OMG is that the biggest camel toe Ive ever seen!!!!!!!!!

said id update if I got afew minutes so heres my update sofar,
started to model and texture the organic hand the guy has left just to get my head back in the frame for the rest of the texturing. The model itself was based on photos of my kid cousins hands hes like 5 or so, seeing I was aiming for a 3d and cartoon look I tought itd be a good idea to make one hand look really menacing and evil looking and have the other really almost babyish and the complete opposite of the other. Its getting there slowly but surely but its not a race lol

is this for game development or just basic 3D practice?
-
16/08/2006 at 12:39 am #33065AnonymousInactive
just portfolio work really. whatever i do be it practice or just messing around I chuck into a folder and put it in as portfolio work.

16/08/2006 at 7:59 am #33066AnonymousInactive
not good, am afraid…
fingers – too thick (might have been proper for rather fat character… and anakin isn’t fat afaik :) – you say – almost babyish looking – baybyish doesnt mean fat…
mind the size of nails – the best way to do the first four fingers is to make one and then copy it, rotate is and scale it (maybe add some small differencies)
and now – the most important and difficult – the thumb – its the hardest part when making a palm, look at your own palm as much as u can – try to look at it from different angles, feeeel how it works, where it bends and where the muscles are… and then: model it :)
cheers & keep going :)

The white highlights make it look glazed….
-
08/09/2006 at 11:15 pm #33449AnonymousInactive
Updated some areas and messed around with some materials and reduced the glaze on the leather abit more, Also added afew capsules for the belt, some sort of supplies maybe, to make it look more functional and detailed. :)
-
08/09/2006 at 11:49 pm #33450AnonymousInactive
you should finalise the mesh now and begin unwrapping and texturing. also the extrusion of the left hand from under the forearm section of the cloak looks weird, as if hes got a broken wrist. the cell shading isnt doing any favours either. good form overall though. post up a wire aswell
