An interesting lecturer claimed Neural interfaces and structures would be the way forward for more realistic A.I(or rather the manner in which they work within the human brain, albiet applied to a mathamatical equation), and or even a more concrete fact that emergence in gameplay is also down to the behaviour of your opponents, an interesting though, and a pluasable one at that, the human brain being made up of these neurons can perform wonderous tasks, but as a singular, neurons are useless. Gaming A.I has been improving of course, with the likes of Halo and the forthcoming HL 2 proving that intelligent decisions can and will be made by NPC’s in the future, heck Halo’s Elites( or more the gold Elites) proved more challanging than many a Gamer to me.
It’s interesting that A.I has so far failed to reach it’s full potential in games, afterall what makes a player feel good is the fact that he/she may have just vanquished an intelligent opponent rather than a mindless drone. Obviously though A.I has to be implimented correctly, games like Ikaruga and the next iteration of GTA hardly need to rely on sophisticated A.I routines. It’s easy to mix it all up and come out with a bunch of linear scripting also but in the end I think A.I is a fascinating prospect, and one that will continue to evolve even after graphical styles and innovations have long since been exhuasted, what are your opinions on the importance of A.I.

Hmm.. After having just finished coding the AI for vehicles, pedestrians and PC characters I can say that its not the most trivial task.
Neural network based AI will be a great step forward but most games do not need to realism offered. The more complex networks may allow for more interactive but if its used only once in a blue moon (ie. user stops to look at a pedestrian) then its not worth the CPU power. imho :)
