Hello all,
I am out of Brighton university for around a month now, been working on my demo reel and blog. Tried applying directly to companies, agencies etc so far but the well seems to be dry, not much jobs floating around. Anyone know of anybody looking to hire Junior Artists/Character Artists? Below is my reel and blog, if anyone wants to take a look.
Demo Reel:
Art Blog:

Any help appreciated! Thanks
Jonathan

Any chance one of you could PM me the email address of someone in animation who is in charge of hiring people?

Seems like Rebellion are hiring like mad at the moment.I read there last week their now branch into racing games by acquiring Razorworks (developer of Ford Racing) from Empire (who had entered consultation with the studio, I know how that feels).
Also worth checking out Codemasters website, their hiring like mad at the moment. They’ve got a few really good projects in the pipeline (one very exciting one indeed which is unannounced). Also its a very different place to what it was, as some of my former work mates went back to work for them having left to join SEGA, and they had been offered numerous other roles at studios up and down the country.
http://www.codemaster.comAlso Freestyle in leamington spa are hiring at mo, they’re a wicked studio. Lots of ex-codemasters guys there with buckets of experience working on a new IP.
http://www.freestylegames.comAnother one who’s hiring is a relatively new studio called Monumental Games in Nottingham specialising in MMORPG for console and PC. Alot of ex-climax studios guys heading up his place but expect a few ppl from Rare, Free Radical Design and neighbouring studios in Derby and leamington (i.e. Rebellion\Core Design, Eurocom, blitz codies etc). I know the lead environment artist there (used to work with me at SRS on SEGA Rally) and he recently mentioned they were on the look out for good programmers and artists so if your interested PM and I’ll put you in contact with him.
http://www.monumentalgames.com(Note please dont bother if you havent got a showreel or demo, a few ppl emailed me in the past looking for programming\art jobs in games, because they thought it would be cool and sent me a half arsed c.v. thrown together in 15 minutes and no demo, chancing their arm. How they thought that would work is beyond me, they went in the bin. Anyway I really dont wanna waste Si’s time).

Pete, you’re great you know that? :D
I got a call today from Codemasters (after applying yesterday, now thats service!) but they could only offer me a Q.A. position as I have no industry experience (yes, the old catch 22 situation). But if youve got experience I say give them a call, they are very proffesional.

Cheers for the heads up Peter. Applied to those places mentioned. Wasnt aware they were hiring. For those artists out there, on the codemasters website they seem to be hiring people without experience.

Thanks again Peter :)

For Q.A.’s maybe…I was told there was no animation jobs for people without experience but by the looks of that link there is…

21/07/2008 at 5:11 pm #41809AnonymousInactive
Well that ad was way back in their list of jobs, think it was like page 10 in the job listings, so it could be quite old and they havent taken it down yet. Or might still be looking for people only in certain areas…..
-
21/07/2008 at 5:13 pm #41810AnonymousInactive
OH right, didn’t see that. Well, it’s good to know they take inexperienced people when they can, anyway :)
Anyone know anybody from Rare (don’t think they are looking at the mo) or Sony?

Well, I can see their point Gus. They may need people to work at a certain pace and surely someone with at least one title under their belt will have a workflow going and have more experience too. Codemasters is pretty big…I think first timers should look towards smaller studios; I’m just applying to everywhere.
Yeah Pete as far as I know those job postings are up there almost six months…
-
22/07/2008 at 6:45 pm #41830AnonymousInactive
Ya I have tried Brownbag as well, no luck on my end anyway. And I think the smaller studios would be more likely to hire graduates. Squash you could try Relentless, zoe mode, Black Rock and NCSoft here in Brighton. Not sure if they are hiring any animators but might be worth a try.

[/quote:f89be218f1]I think entirely the opposite is true. Larger studios like EA, Sony, Rare, codemasters etc can sustain alot more inexperienced ppl than smaller studios. Typically, smaller studios will want the most experienced ppl, they really dont have the time to invest in first timers.

I said nothing…I’ve only heard the rumours… Think TCE has enough to say, and certainly too much to read…
I was more talking about the fact that they’ve got a new studio and are crying out for people to fill the roles. I know lots of people who received emails about the studio, including myself. -

Small bit of advice…I would avoid posting the names – in a public forum -of studios that have contacted members personally. If they have posted jobs publicly then I would think its OK to post the link – but otherwise I’d keep their name off the radar. I could be creating a flame for myself here…so sorry in advance. Kind comments welcome…if you think its garbage – then a PM please.

Yeah nobody has posted the names of studios that have contacted people recently but you are right its a bad idea. Which is why I havent done it. :)
I don’t think it has gone too off-topic Pete, I’ve found several studios I could ask for work.

Does anyone know details about what someone would need to move and work in England from Ireland? Like forms or visas, etc?

You need nothing. Its the EU just move!
You get your new national insurance number (equivalent to PPS here) from the local employment office when you start. Everything else is pretty much the same as Ireland.

OK, I got an interview at the end of the month, it’s in Oxfordshire, so I’m trying to book tickets over. Does anyone know if it is possible to bring up airports on google maps? For people who know the landscape, which would be the best way to get to Oxford/Oxfordshire; from London or Bristol? London looks less windy and I’m sure had more routes to Oxford, but Bristol looks closer. Anyone know a good national train/bus (whichever is cheaper) website I could go and check prices out on for the trip from the airport to Oxford/Oxfordshire?

you are in the EU – no working visas for the UK.
biggest prob I had when moving to the UK was opening a bank account and re-registering my car.
Last conf I was at in Oxford I flew Aer Lingus to Birmingham and got a Virgin Train down.
Aphra.
Stuff from conf website
Arrival by air
All four major London airports (Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stanstead) are conveniently accessible from Oxford, with Heathrow and Gatwick proving to be the most popular and convenient ones. Birmingham International Airport provides another alternative. An excellent bus service is available from Gatwick and Heathrow direct to Oxford. See http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/From London
There are regular 24 hour coach services between London and Oxford and both Heathrow and Gatwick airports. They run approximately every 20 minutes during the day and the journey is about 90 minutes. For more information visit The Oxford Tube (http://www.oxfordtube.com/) and Oxford Bus Company sites( http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/). -

Ye great company. Reminds me of Rare in the good auld days when they worked with Nintendo. Study up though and be sharp for the interview, these guys are really in the zone (so i’ve heard).
-
22/08/2008 at 3:07 pm #42111AnonymousInactive
Good luck with the interview. Make sure you’re 100% prepared for it and know the answers to every question they could ask you.
I’ve tried to wing it a couple of times for retail jobs and have been told straight to my face that I didn’t get the job because other people knew exactly what they were going to say, and even though my answers were better, they got the position ahead of me because I didn’t prepare beforehand.
Aw well. Fair enough. It was a learning experience. Then there was an interview for something else were the only thing you can learn is how shocking some organisations are – the British Council were about as professional as the Ethiopian ice skating team. :P
Let us know how it goes.

Didn’t get the job. Next time I think I’ll just flush 200 euro down the toilet; it’ll be less exhausting. It’s a sad state of affairs when you apply for a graduate position which they actually advertised as and then say they decided to hire experienced people instead. I had every one of their requirements too, even traditional drawing skills. Back to the old argument of how the hell are we supposed to get the experience we need in the first place if they won’t even hire the graduates they advertise for anymore…completely given up now. A whole summer of looking, emailing dozens of companies and still nothing.

Ya ive made it a general rule, dont attend foreign interviews unless its all paid for. If your footing the bill they’ll nearly always chance their arm, bring ya for an interview and maybe your their new star artist/programmer and if not they’ve only wasted 1 hour of time and you have wasted dosh and time.
I wouldnt say you entirely wasted your time Squash, you’ve been in a game interview, so your one step closer than 80% of the guys throwing in c.v’s. You made it to their studio! As for choosing to hire experience, perhaps that was just a cover, maybe they actually didnt have any positions or funding at present and just to save face interviewed you. I’ve seen this happen alot. Rival companies are interviewing and ramping up, smaller less successful do it too just to show their hiring (but they’re not). Then again maybe they got an experienced person for cheaper money than you, if so you dont want to work there anyway, if they pay experience like grads.

Ian- I have emails come to me from datascope every few days…never seen a position from them not asking for someone with published titles under their belt. Tried to get on to Amiqus’ website the other day (with no joy). Are they good? Any other agencies I should give my details to?
Pete- I dunno about them not genuinely looking, they have an ad in the latest GAME magazine as well as the one in Edge I saw last month. I just hope they actually did go with someone with experience rather than just not taking me cause the reel/portfolio is crap. Hard to know if they are being straight with me or not.

Venom had adverts in Edge a month after they closed their doors :) You book and pay for them a long time in advance. Also it shows face nationally in the press. I’m sure your portfolio was okay, they say it before you arrived so must have been good enough to get in the door.
