Long time no post. I’ve been going through a 1940’s period with my personal work lately so here’s an Art Deco styled steam engine. Mainly taken from the Hudson 490 C & O train. It will start evolving though as work continues.

Excellent work. Great attention to detail, great use of polygons, great textures, model looks great. You should be working in games. You might have to go abroad though.
I’m joking of course. There’s no ‘might’ in it. :)

Lol, I’m already abroad and working for the last 5 years for SCEE :)
It’s true though if you are in Ireland and want a dev job on large productions you need to get on a plane.
Thanks for the comments. There’ll be an environment and additional work on the train to come.

Hi TheNorthridge,
Funny thing is the real world train I modelled this off was the one used as inspiration for Bioshock. For now I want to make a fitting hood ornament or additional detail to finish it. Need to knock up some concepts.
Here’s the Bioshock train

Thanks Noely, more WIP stuff inbound …. still fighting with the materials.

I’ve only started the interior for the train I’ve been working on. Here’s where tonight leaves it. I’m intending to texture the high-poly fully and bake the maps directly from that …. for fun of course. Designing as I go so changes are likely.

I’ve managed to get some time in on this over the last two weekends. For a change I’ve went with modelling and texturing the high poly in Maya. I’ll now bake it to a lower res mesh and continue texturing in PS. After that I’ll need door frames, lights, bag racks and other interior assets to finish it off.

Very nice work, I really like the gestalt achieved by your balanced use of texture & colour. It’s aces, two thumbs up!

Had to google gestalt, I get the comment now :) Thanks Richard. With this piece I’m aiming to break that "typical gamey" look ( over emphasised details and too much noise/grunge ) by being more conservative and careful where I place details and to what degree.
I’ll be taking a few days off so there won’t be any major updates for a little bit. I aim to finish the train and interior by the end of the month.

And now you have a new word. And now you’re more powerful :) Glad to help.

Here’s an update on what I’ve been up to in my spare SPARE time. This is the low poly interior. Seats and additional assets to decorate the train are in production. For now except for some seam and lightmap issues it’s all going well enough. Material tweaks are also likely.

@kyotokid – Heh man how’s things ? I hope all is well. I’m still practicing. Someday I want to be good.
@mikelee – Thanks

The old sketching equipment has been dragged out to progress work on this piece.

Thanks Pete. Here’s the completed Hi res asset, fully textured. It’s a mixed bag of elements textured in Mudbox and Maya. Render is from Maya, Mental Ray. Next up will be the baking to a low res mesh and moving to UDK to try out tessellation with it.
I’m also going to see if a final texture pass can be completed in Mudbox on the low res model.
So far this project has been a blast. Can’t wait to get it all together as I’ve been imagining it in my head. Still a while to go yet.

I’ve decided to wrap this asset up for now and present it. The train will still be used in an upcoming environment produced throughout 2013 so it may get a little more polish in the future.
The main things being some additional noise and grunge in the textures. Starting out the intention was to keep the train clean and maintained as per reference and not to over do the grunge/noise. I feel the front could have done with a little more wear in hindsight and some additional geometry details.
Overall I’m happy with the results and have learned a bit so on to the next challenge
