As part of our Computer Game Technology Masters course here in Abertay we are required to produce a prototype game over a five month period. Our team is comprised of 7 Programmers and 2 Producers however we currently lack any artists. As such, given the talent I’ve seen around these parts, I thought I’d ask here to see if anyone was interested in coming on board.
With that in mind, let me introduce you to…
Outline
PRISM is a first person puzzle-based adventure game with platforming elements. It is played in a virtual world wherein the player can use different color vision modes to alter the environment around them, enabling access to paths, hidden objects and other previously unreachable obstacles in an effort to successfully navigate the level and reach their goal.Gameplay Overview
The player will be able to switch between red, green and blue ”vision modes”. These modes allow the player to see and interact with objects of the selected color. This enables the player to reach areas they could not access before, build up paths to unreachable areas and take cover from enemy patrols. The game will feature different rooms each of which has their own puzzle(s) to solve. This will involve moving platforms that the player will have to traverse in order to proceed, navigating through a maze of colored lasers and manipulating physics based puzzles, all the while taking advantage of the unique mechanic of vision modes. The player can also interact with security cameras placed strategically around the level by hacking into them. These will give the player an overall view of the room in order to plan their routes accordingly.
The levels will also feature enemies in the form of sentinels who may be either stationary or roving. These sentinels will present an immediate mortal danger to the player. The player cannot be aggressive and can only rely on stealthy and effective level navigation in order to achieve their goal.
Artistic Style
While we do have some ideas for the overall look of the game, we’re really interested in someone who can be creative within the confines of the project outline. Thus far, all we have narrowed it down to style wise is Portal meets Rez meets Tron. Or in other words, bright and colorful denotes the gameplay mechanics while the surrounding environment is more sterile, be it Portal style grey or Tron style black. That said, we’re open to any and all ideas so there’s plenty of scope for artists to be creative! What We’re Looking For
Initially we’re looking for some Concept Art for the characters and environments but if anyone is interested in joining and has a different skill set, be it texture art, modeling or animation, we’d be delighted to welcome you to the team! You also don’t have to be a student so the invitation is open to all. In terms of commitment, don’t let that 5 months worry you, we’re interested in both short and long term involvement and rest assured that all work will be fully credited no matter what you can offer to the project. Why Get Involved?
If anyone is considering getting involved but isn’t sure if it’s worth it then let me assure you it is. Every year these projects are shown to a host of industry veterans from studios across the UK and so it’d be a great place to get your work seen. The team is also large for such a project and extremely dedicated so you can be sure the finished product will be developed to the best of our abilities. If anyone is interested then please feel free to drop me a PM and we can discuss it in more detail. Thanks for reading!

Interesting concept! Good luck with finding artists too.
We have the very same problem in Carlow (particularly for the Intel Havok competition) where we’re all programmers and we’ve got no artists on the team. We’ve ended up doing a lot of artwork ourselves because of it, which I think is an complete and utter waste of time.

In hindsight we should have done that, yes.. We’re not done yet though so we may be back later scabbing for some help. :) Work on the Havok project has been temporarily put on hold because we have about 15 million other projects to do at the moment (ok- maybe slightly exaggerating there :)) but we’ll be resuming work on it soon enough after the other stuff is done and dusted.
