Hi Folks,
I’m unemployed. I’ve sent my CV’s out and gotten no reply. I come from a board-game and RPG background. I have been playing and writing these types of games for 20 years now. Getting this experience into a portfolio has been very difficult for me. I need a solid piece of work to showcase my talents and I’m sure there are plenty of other people out there who find themselves in very similar circumstances.
I’ve been racking my brain trying to come up with ideas and how best to display them for a potential employer, and nothing quite does it like a little demo. The guys/gals who make great demo’s either find jobs or start their own companies.
With this in mind, I’d like to get a group together to work on a project. People who are unemployed and are willing to give a few hours every week in order to create something that they can proud of. I’ve got no preconceptions about the group or what type of project it might be, only that I would like to see it finished. It is something that all participants own and can lay claim to for their own CV.
I am just finishing up a 6 month internship with a Dublin based games company and would love to put some of the skills I learned into practice for myself. What little experience I do have from the professional environment I’d be quite happy to pass on, as well as what I’ve learned from my amateur time spent developing, and my 2 year H. Dip. It might not be a lot, but if you are sittin’ on your ass or if you just missed your college course by a few points and want to kill a few months while also working towards a great CV then I think this could be a good thing.
Irrelevant of your skills, whether you’ve just started messing with Flash or only know basic 3D, reply here and voice your interest/support and we’ll take it from there.
Gavin.

I’d be interested. I’m in the middle of a computing and design degree. Just finished a module on product design principles ( which I hope to get a distinction in ). I have many years of running official online tournaments for major organisations, like Microsoft and Ubisoft. I worked in numerous senior positions in Gamebattles.com. I ran my own gaming site for many years, called paly2compete. I also have ok knowledge of Javascript and a little knowledge of Java, though I have to say programming isn’t my calling in life lol. I scrapped a pass on my Java programming module.
I love game design, so if you think I can help then I am more than willing to lend a hand. Just shout out and I will send you my email.
PS one of my main interests is game UI. I think it’s vital to get the information to the player as quickly and as intuitively as possible.

Hi, I’m also interested although I’m technically not unemployed as I work part time in an electronics shop but I would definitely prefer a job in the game industry!
Self taught programming enthusiast with many years experience in C, C++, C# (XNA), Javascript, Asm and more recently Flash-actionscript.
I have a game available on the nokia OVI store which not only did I create but I also created the programming language it was written and complied with.
I’m currently belfast based if that matters?

Global Gam Jam included a board game category this year. Next GGJ takes place at the end of January. Griffith College ran the Dublin site and I was involved in the Thurles site. One of the games created was featured on ggj website and as such is a good portfolio piece for the students involved.
Its a 48 Hour non-stop event.

@tenaciousR, no I don’t think location should matter, depending on the specific project that is anyone should be able to work from anywhere. We’ll just make sure we pay attention to how we best communicate.
regarding working hours, there is no hard and fast rules here, so as long as people feel they can put a few hours in every week I think that would be great.
@SocksUp, cool, will look into the January games jam.

What kind of project were you thinking about overall?
I just want to get a feel for the scope of it all. -

I’m not deciding upon anything inparticular until we get the group together. I dont think there is any point in saying we’re going to make a facebook game if we have no php programmer etc etc. Besides, I’d like everyone to get involved in that decision, hence the googlegroup. We’ll chat there.
I’ve approved your request btw. see you there.
