well that was the rumour wasent it? alternate between north and south. And getting to dublin from an international speakers point of view is a hell of a lot easier than Galway\Cork\Limerick\Waterford!

There’s an old thread that has all the rumours, not too sure what one it is though. A quick search under ‘Awakenings’ should find it soon enough.
Yep, Dublin was mooted as the best location for this year. Then it would be back up north next year in Belfast or Derry. Hopefully the funding will be in place for an event. Don’t forget, it also depends on how busy the committee members are.

As long as it has an international airport I suppose its ok…
Derry is ok by me…

I can see Ryanair pulling out of Derry before long. They’ve already threatened to do so before. Just wait until they get upgrade their aircraft. They’ll start complaining about the size of the runway again. The airport will certainly never be used to carry passengers to continental Europe.
Dublin and Belfast are the only two international airports here. The latter city can hardly be called a game development hub, so Dublin is the obvious one for the near future.

yes the IGDA committee decided to alternate awakenings north and south to share the travelling and last time some of the speakers couldn’t make it to derry given other committments and the number of flights in and out of derry.
The IGDA committee were meant to have a meeting in December but that got moved to January so we should have more info after that. But at the moment it looks like funding is in place and that it will take place in Dublin and it will be in 2007. That is all I know at the moment. Exact timing will depend on venue and speaker availability.

Thanks for the update, Aphra. Are there any ideas as to where the event could be held? I don’t know the area well, but Trinity College sounds like a good place for it. It has a conference centre (if I remember correctly) and it’s easy to get to. I remember the Lionhead talk being held there not too long ago.. -

that has to be decided but we haven’t ruled out the digital hub either as they have access to the old Media Lab Europe offices..well should have until the new research centre is set up… and that includes full audio set up, catering facilities etc.

Derry has already got funding to increase the size of the runway. I dont think it is likely that ryanair will pull ot and its only a matter of time before more flights are available to and from city of derry airport. there is a lot of controversy over this, as the decision to increase the size of the runway was not decided by derry city council (who own the airport) but by ryanair as they threatened to pull out because their new planes were too big. but the development is taking place none the less.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/4379505.stmwith regards the awakenings conference. i am dissapointed it cannot be held in the place it originated, but theres not much that can be done about that now. i do feel that keeping the conference in the one spot each year is much better as its name will grow. Derry/ donegal has 1 established games company (torc), 1 emerging company (phooka) and a whole batch of future game designers working in the incubation centre in nwifhe. as well as dublin i think derry should be established as a digital hub also.
anywho… sorry for rambling.

I remember reading that, but that was almost a year ago. As far as I’m aware, there’s been no developments on this. Any info you have would be very useful. Maybe I’ve missed the boat, is building already under way? A lot of Ryanair’s profits come from Ireland to Great Britain routes and vice versa, so Derry could make them a lot of money. However, don’t think for one second that O’Leary won’t pull Ryanair out if it doesn’t bring in the money right away. The Liverpool route will probably succeed because of it’s large Irish community.with regards the awakenings conference. i am dissapointed it cannot be held in the place it originated, but theres not much that can be done about that now. i do feel that keeping the conference in the one spot each year is much better as its name will grow. I understand your argument, but I still think it should be in different locations around Ireland. Derry gained a boost from holding the event. Cities like Dublin and Belfast deserve the same opportunity to get that boost. I’m sure it’ll be back in Derry before long! -

the idea guys is to alternate north and south every two years .. you won’t have to wait that long for it to be up North again..

northern fok would be at an advantage either way, the sterling exchange rate to euro will compensate for any travelling surely!

If I had to think with my head rather than my heart, I’d say hold it in Dublin every year :D

Galway is now quite the hotspot of development, so don’t rule it out, plus it’s a great city to go out in!
Regarding organising it, I belive that some of the Galway companies previously organised a smaller game dev event, so they already know the ropes regarding organising a larger one.

My two cents, personally i’d prefer to have it in L’Derry for my own convenience , or even in belfast. Dunno about dublin i get lost easy :(

you have to think about sharing the funding costs between different agencies and making it convenient for people from other parts of the country. By moving it we spread the load and make it easier for a range of people to attend. Don’t forget we have new courses now in Tralee, Limerick and modules in DIT as well as the up and running Carlow course.
As for getting lost – have you ever tried to drive from Dublin to L/Derry? I’ve got lost a few times on my first few trips up North on those roads. Not so bad now I’ve lived for a year nearby.

The only problem is that Galway is the official ‘Middle of Nowhere’. Getting there from the international airports would be very difficult for speakers. Belfast takes seven hours on the bus and it’s almost four hours from Dublin. -

OR 2 and a half hours on the train ;)
