Hi all,
I was thinking of organising the birthday shindig for Friday the 27th of April. Can people let me know if that clashes with anything major?
we will open voting for annual awards as soon as I have a date and venue..
I would also be interested in suggestions for speakers and talks on the night..
finally, I would be interested in one or two volunteers to help out organising and running the event. PM me if interested. It won’t be onorous, but help is nice :)

Congrats Pete. :)

30/03/2007 at 9:20 am #36299Aphra KKeymaster
good excuse Pete…! congrats…
ok..so the date seems ok…just have to sort out the venue – Digital Exchange where we had it last year not available.
Hub have offered the cafe and the learning lab but we would have to pay security guards (nice area!). Looking into other options.

will there be beer :P
-
30/03/2007 at 12:13 pm #36301Aphra KKeymaster
now that is a stupid question. When did we ever have a birthday event without some alcohol.
Altho we went posh last year and had sparkling, red and white wine!
Aphra.

Congratulations Pete dude!!! There’ll be no more eating crisps in bed for ye now! :P
The date for the shindig sounds good, we can raise a glass or three there to Pete and his other ( and better of course ;) ) half!

and the little problem of Easter as well in April – you just can’t win.
Anyway I am pleased to announce that this year’s birthday shindig will be hosted by the GV2 Research Group in Trinity College Dublin and will take place in the Lloyd Building lecture room LB01 from 7-9pm on Friday the 27th of April.
Put it in your diaries…

Amazing how the threads on this site with the word "Shin-dig" get so much interest. As a great man once said..

Refresh us on the previous winners for stamina… I can’t even remember who won last year.
1. No idea
2. No idea
3. Mal / Omen
4. kyotokid
5. Demonware / Dark WaterAs with all Shindigs or group gatherings I will be absent, research is a cruel mistress(that and the inherent costs involved). I will be in Dublin this Saturday night if anyone wants to attempt to get a free pint.

Re. talks, I can prepare a quick IP number (what else  ), kinda ‘IP-in-games-101’, if there’s any interest at all. Be about 20 mins tops, using PPT with screenshots and/or vids.
Pete – congratulations to you and your future Mrs. Only bit of unsollicited advice that springs to mind (after 11 years  ): it’s going to be your (you + Mrs Pete) day, so don’t fret about whether guest are enjoying themselves/this-that-the other.
See you lot later then.

yes your post rate is quite impressive Peter – even after your left UCC! People usually go get a real job and don’t have as much time to post…
by the way I would interested to know why people think DarkWater should get the group of the year award?
Aphra.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too.I know DemonWare won it last year, but without them the site would be in need of funding, I think that’s reason enough.
Anyone know what DarkWater are up to, other than advertising on GI.biz?

[/quote:a1cf269978]Considering the number of companies that seem to have fallen off the map I think its important to acknowledge those that are still with us…. that and Demonware won it last year. But I agree with Omen’s point on the funding.
-
04/04/2007 at 6:00 pm #36382AnonymousInactive
Are they hiring like mad? Sure their advertising, anyone on here from Dark Water or know anyone who has just been hired by them?

thanks…but since I am one of the judges I think I am disqualified..conflict of interest and all that :)
re DarkWater and reasons for nominations. I was just thinking yes it is great they have opened up a studio but Demonware and Upstart both completed pretty good business deals last year, the Digital Hub ran the irish Dare heats etc. etc…so just think about why you are giving the nominations.
Aphra.

ok we have quite a few nominations for newbie, stamina and salmon of knowledge..humour a few less and person/group is looking a bit incestuous with Demonware running away with it and also funding our site!!
I would also like to point out that in the last year DIT ran the CGames conference, Steve Collins and crew have set up the new research group in TCD, the Hub hosted the first Irish heat of the world Cybergames…just suggestions…

thanks to everyone for coming out on Friday night. We had a great turnout of over forty people, some very entertaining talks from Dylan and Mike. Unfortunately Steph had to fly to the States for work at the last minute.
I will post more later on but the winners of the awards were
newbie – eDen or Paul from Ballyfermot, Nooptical or David McGovern for stamina, Gizmo or Simon for salmon of knowledge and overall to Demonware yet again. Sean was on hand to collect his ‘analogue’ Mario Kart racing gamelater we retired to Mahaffeys to see the end of the Sunderland game (yeah!) and have quite a few drinks..
thanks to everyone for turning up and especially those who travelled from the North and Galway amongst other places…
news piece to be posted later and I believe Jamie has some pics..
