Epic. I’ll be there.
As for nominations… Kyotokid is the first name that come to mind when it comes to consistency. He should be up for the stamina award.
His profile says he’s been around since 2005, but Jediboy has only really started posting reguarly in the last year. He’s made a great effort to boost discussion in the community and I think that should earn him a nomination for newbie of the year. I’d also have to say Matthew deserves a shot at this too for what he’s brought to the community.

The Newbie award: Steve64
Stamina: ian_hannigan
Salmon of knowledge: Jediboy
Humour: Mal
Group of the year: Microsoft Ireland. Sponsored IET lab , ran XNA event with Trinity and gave me an XBox so I consider myself fully bribed. -

I will have to look up my rule book…Steve was a member as steve havok…does he qualify as a newbie in any sense?! I can think of many reasons why he deserves an award…just not sure it is the newbie one!!

Ivan!
Oh wait, were you serious?
I’d like to hear what Steve Collins has to say about stuff or someone at the top from Havok or Demonware…but I’m gonna miss out anyway. -

Warren Spector or Sid Meier would be much appreciated…. yes I know they’re American, but there could be Irish great-grandparents in there somewhere! -
14/04/2008 at 9:21 pm #40724AnonymousInactive
so when will it be confirmed ? and where in DIT you planning on holding it
-
15/04/2008 at 8:10 am #40727AnonymousInactive
It will be in Kevin St. Either the staff canteen on the 4th floor, or one of the big tiered lecture theatres. Just firming up the date!
-
15/04/2008 at 11:05 am #40729AnonymousInactive

-
16/04/2008 at 12:58 pm #40740AnonymousInactive
How about we do less awards ;)
1. Newbie Award
2. The Salmon of Knowledge Award
3. Person / Group Of The Year Award
-
16/04/2008 at 1:03 pm #40741Aphra KKeymaster
well that may happen by default!
Humour wasn’t awarded last year – we must have just had lots of funny people in the first three years…
Aphra.
-
16/04/2008 at 1:07 pm #40742AnonymousInactive
I forgot to include one award though;
4. Ivan Award
This is a reoccurring award just given to Ivan for no reason. -
16/04/2008 at 1:09 pm #40743AnonymousInactive
Maybe expanding one of the sections into a contribution to industry award (I’m thinking person/group) for which I would nominate BCFE for flying the flag for games courses for so long.
-
16/04/2008 at 4:39 pm #40744Aphra KKeymaster
well you can nominate any person/group for that award and just give the reason why….it is an overall contribution to the Irish games industry award.
best

A quick update for everyone.
Due to a serious illness in my family and me not getting my act together the birthday event will not take place this week. We are looking to postpone to early May but before uni exams take place. Bear with me on this and I will come back with some great speakers and refreshments.
Aphra.

Bomberman (Michael) and BitRabbitWhite/blank/neutral vote on a ‘newbie’ as I plead guilty to aggravated absenteism this past year, so absolutely not qualified to lodge a preference + wouldn’t be fair on any newbie.

a late nomination for
Ronan Hayes as Salmon of knowledge, for his stern stance on Crunching
Aphra for Stamina, as girls are finally playing games.
Martin Connoly to keep up with the string of newbies from BCFE
Person of the year Michael Bit Rabbit, for that "another world" port

Ok we have speakers and a date….put Thurs the 8th of May in your diaries….we are just confirming now the room but it will be in DIT Kevin Street.
That is also the day of the Dare to be Digital interviews so there should be a lot of games folk around town.
This year we will have a panel. They have been selected as they were originally interviewed by me during the research project in 2000 which gave rise to gamedevelopers.ie. So they have been around the Irish games industry for a while and have seen many changes.
Confirmed speakers on the night so far:
Tony Kelly (Demonware/Activision)
Steve Collins (TCD)
Peter Lynch (Eirplay)more to come.
start spreading the word
Aphra.

I know Thurs does not suit people in the UK and people who have to travel a long way….and I wouldn’t mind having the birthday event or a shindig outside Dublin if we thought we could get a critical mass to travel and had someone to host us…

xD ask Aphra,
It was my first time even hearing of GD.ie, so I’m still trying to process all the information I got there, there was a Q&A where questions floating about there. eh… each member of the panel (can’t remember the names xD) gave a brief explination of what happend over the last 5 year in game design,
Although when Peter Lynch went up first, Bryan left the UT3 game on in the background, so while Peter was talking, UT3 went "5 minutes left!" and yeah… that was funny. lol
I don’t know what happend afterward though, I’m too young for teh pub. :(
Great evening though! Bryan announced me as an example of youth in the game industry… I’m gonna kill him lolScott.

Hi guys,
Great to see such a massive turnout for the event and an honest and open discussion on the state of the Irish industry at the moment. Aphra, I’ll have those photos organised for you asap, but would it be possible to get links for the presentations that were made to be put up on gd.ie?

Thanks for the update Aphra!
Typical – ah yeah, take the money and run…typical :)
Really sorry to see you leave Ireland Michael – but delighted to hear you are moving back with the family, about your deal with DotEmu and BitRabbit staying in Ireland!!! More positives than negatives there :)
Anyway, couldn’t happen to a nicer fella too!
Big fat congrats and best of luck with the move :)
