Screw "nice fairly innovative ideas" :), theyre not easy to come by, dont always sell well and are hard to schedule
If ye want have any chance of getting something started get a small bunch of decent people together working on outsourced content\conversions\porting and build up from there. Leave the "fairly innovattive games" to the Edge magazine readers.
As for funcom twas a real shame it went down, after flapping about for a few years we had just reached the point where we could make a decent console game and it was all over, probably just as well tho as it looked like it was gonna implode :(…

I’m still very much of the plan. Work on as many games as possible in varying roles and hopefully build up the experience and skill to return in the future (4-5 years) and get some investors to back me to start something up back home.
Hopefully with the contacts and experience I’ll have gained, will aid me in retaining investment as I wont be your typical case of giving some chancer with no track record a bunch of cash and watching it going up in smoke. So far I think I’m on track with the experience and definately the contacts. what this space..lol

I agree with peter_b, it will only be those who have experience of AAA or top tier tooling & technology who get the lions share of any available VC. Ireland Inc. has a great reputation for shipping innovative, big ticket, Software. That business is familiar with the relatively long sales cycles needed to sell such software. Games are a different ball-game than Software – mainly because of the investment needed to convince people to buy your game pre-post release and, as a result, fund future development. You probably have about max 3 months, post release, to recoup costs and make a profit. So its not just about finding the cash to create the game – its also about obtaining the resources needed to buy the gamer eyes, ears, thumbs and limbs.

I met a few people who worked there, and they told me that the manageress used to dock peoples wages for working outside 9 to 5 – so if you worked a late one, say right through to 11 or 12pm, you got no extra wages, but if you then landed in at 11am the next morning, you got docked 2 hours pay!!!
Not a great way to run a creative company.
I remember hearing other nightmare stories about Funcom Dublin, can’t remember them at the mo though.
