An interesting wee development from the folks over at Sky Sports…
Counter-Strike To Air On…Sky Sports
Sky Sports Extra. UK denizens will know it as Sky’s leftovers bin, where you can tune in and catch high-intencity sports like fishing, poker and the NBA. Oh, and Counter-Strike.
Sky have purchased the British television rights to the game from Valve, and will run a series of shows based on a dedicated Sky Counter-Strike competition. Sounds like one for all the insomniacs out there. [/quote:b35a502d68]
I’m not really sure how to respond to that to be honest. While a gripping game of clan based CS is always great craic I can’t imagine it would be as much fun to watch. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with it. Whether they integrate it into some kind of bigger show and only have the CS as a competition element like in the Gamesmaster days or whether they try a similar format as the failed Bleeding Thumbs project the BBC had in the pipeline awhile back… -

I’ve seen a few game sites trying to do a T.V. style showing of Counter-Strike, and it usually follows some guy who really isn’t in the action while the Commentators kinda just tell you what is going on based on the stats coming up in the corner (almost like listening to it on the radio). I think the best bet would be to have a few cameras set up in game, recording the action, then cut and edit it before showing it (live games in this context just make it too hard to catch the action when it is most important) Still, very interesting for the future development of game tv.

While showing edited versions of the games would be one solution the problem then is that you lose some of the excitment. In terms of whats there at the moment, SourceTV, the integrated recording program for CS:Source, has attempted to fix the above problem by dynamically changing the player camera to where the action is based on their current activites.
My main issue with these types of programs, however, is with the presenters themselves. In the case of a show based on CS you would need people who know what they’re talking about. Simply reading off stats generated during the game would be incredibly boring and just come across as patronising as the majority of other shows that have been produced. Its been mentioned before but the reason Bits on Channel4 was successful was because their presenters were interesting, injected a bit of fun into the procedings and, for the most part anyway, knew what they were talking about. So if this show has any chance of succeeding they’d better make sure they get people capable of presenting it in any enjoyable manner.
