One point which came across rather strongly, I thought, was that it’s comparatively easy to get started as an indie developer these days — in terms of the availability of tools and resources.
It’s no longer necessary that you be some kind of software engineering prodigy. It helps to have a good comprehension of code, but designers and artists can publish games too. He also mentioned some excellent, freely available engines such as Unity3D and Stencyl, which exports Flash games and costs nothing. It also fully supports the Kongregate API, which means there is nothing stopping you from starting your casual game development career right now.
This line of reasoning appeals to me. You hear a lot of talk between budding and aspiring game developers about the perceived lack of a significant industry presence in Ireland. While there is room for improvement here – and improvement is coming – there is nothing stopping motivated students and enthusiasts from starting their own careers by self-publishing to casual games portals, mobile markets etc…

In somewhat topical news, if you haven’t played vvvvvv yet now is a good time. A new version is out with a level editor too as part of the Humble Indie Bundle, a pay what you want deal. Details here:

Also another thanks for Terry for giving the interview for the article.

The current feature gives some more insight into the EI competitive start up fund for internet and games companies and the experiences of companies who have received support.
Remember the deadline is 6pm on October 19, 2011.
