Hey all,
Ben quite awhile since Ive ben posting on this! Just wondering did anyone put an entry in from Ireland for DARE this year. My team from Letterkenny IT just got it in on the deadline.
Another thing I noticed was that there was no coverage about it on this site. Only for a lecturer mentioned it last week we would of missed it. I expected alot more from the Irish GD site and have ben searching the forums and dont see anything. -

Not sure where you were looking
http://www.gamedevelopers.ie/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5375Good luck with your entry, hopefully you’re not the only Irish team that applied

Thanks couldnt find nefing on it in the forums but I meant as in a whole that GD didnt have a feature on it or even have it on their calender.

We usually get sent info on Dare or hear about it but I checked the Dare ireland forums a couple of weeks ago and found nothing and no-one posted here. Everything was done from Abertay this year it would appear.
We ain’t detectives!

I dont mean nefing against GD. Ive ben a fan of it and a regular user since I started college. I just relied on it for all this information and was surprised when there was nothing about DARE. I had thought that they would contact ye to promote it which im shocked about as ud think theyd want to get as many entrants as possible. I just wanted to hear how come there hadnt ben nefing about DARE and im glad that other post was pointed out so at lease I know there has ben some entrants from Ireland

Hey I am pretty new to these forums, a rich resource to find may i add
No, there was unfortunately nothing meritable in the eyes of their own, Abertay looks like they are putting forward the winners….

22/03/2009 at 10:28 pm #43638AnonymousInactive
What ya mean Abertay are putting forward the winners?

Perhaps any entrants who are on the boards could keep us informed as to what is going on in the competition this year.

Well so far our game idea has been picked and during this week well hear whether we are being called for the interview that will happen in Dublin sometime the following week. Then well be told whether or not we are going to Scotland sometime after that.
-
23/03/2009 at 12:24 am #43644AnonymousInactive
We’re in the same boat over here although we put forward our own idea for our entry so it’s slightly unsurprising. The date that the teams are being informed whether they are being called for an interview was changed rather quietly from last Friday to this Wednesday coming (March 25th) so we’ll know more then.
Evidently only 8 teams from Scotland are being called though so we’re currently crossing every bendable part of body. :) Best of luck to you guys entering back home anyway!
-
23/03/2009 at 12:46 am #43645AnonymousInactive
I was unsure when we were going to hear but i was thinking it would of been this week. Last week seemed to soon.
Good luck to ye too! It would be great to meet ye over there lol Im shocked that only 8 teams would be interviewed but then I suppose either the idea can be done or it cant. No point interviewing a team when they can see themselves it would be impossible to do. 2 days and counting….  -
25/03/2009 at 3:45 pm #43683AnonymousInactive
*sigh*
Evidently now we have to wait until the beginning of next week to hear whether we got through or not. As the regional interviews are taking place on different dates, and Scotland is the last one, they’re holding back the announcement so that all teams across the UK have the same amount of time to prepare.
I really REALLY hate waiting… :?
-
25/03/2009 at 4:04 pm #43685AnonymousInactive
Well im afraid our team didnt get called for the interview. Hope to hear who else from Ireland got called and whoever did goodluck!

I’m working with a Northern Irish team, we got called out for interview, unfortunately they are only having interviews in Liverpool this year for some reason, so we have to fly out Sunday for the interview on Monday. Working on getting stuff ready for it now. Would certainly be nice to get picked to go forward to Scotland, its a nice concept with a lot of potential both visually and gameplay wise.

Good luck dude. -
27/03/2009 at 11:20 am #43717Aphra KKeymaster
good luck to everyone who made it to the interview stage.
I suspect the number of teams selected this year is governed a lot by funding limitations.
If you don’t get selected I think you should look to other competitions to develop the idea.
Hey Squash – what is your team called?
Aphra.

27/03/2009 at 2:38 pm #43724AnonymousInactive
Ok im not taking anyfing away from our idea but I know it wasnt really suited to DARE as you really need an out there idea but im glad we didnt get picked cause having to travel over to Liverpool to be told our idea wouldnt be picked would of probably killed me  Still havent heard of any southern Ireland team being picked. Has anyone else heard?

Good luck dude.[/quote:188fc6f5df]Ah its not my idea nor am I Lead Artist, so I can’t claim responsibility for either the visual style or gameplay. :D I’ve just been brought in as an additional artist.
I think we are called Team Cottonmouth…the concept is called Hoe Down Showdown anyway.
Here I am trying to paint some concepts and either I have a virus (which is the most probable) or my Wacom drivers have crapped out because my cursor is flying all over the shop, even when I am not touching the wacom or mouse. And AVG can’t find the virus. Great. Why does everything go wrong just before a bloody deadline…

Send me some details on your team if you can (and if it won’t compromise anything. I’d like to showcase them on the Digital Circle blog.

Hey,
I’m part of a team that got through from the south. Weird thing is I haven’t heard of any other team from the south. Usually there’s one or two teams we hear about but this year so far nothing.
We’re flying out to Liverpool tonight aswell. Dare will cover the flights but not the accomadation which is a bit of a pain, but I’d rather fly out the night before and make sure we’re on time then risk missing the interview. I also heard every team this year spends the 10 weeks in Dundee which means we’re not in Dublin which is what I had originally heard.
-
29/03/2009 at 3:13 pm #43741AnonymousInactive
Where did you hear the accomadation is not covered? That’s a stupid decision. My team were ready to keel over by the time we arrived in Liverpool, and I had travelled to Derry from Dublin first. How do they expect us to be on top of our game if we were to do that without spending the night and getting rest first. And our accomadation was not cheap. I hope you are wrong. I’ll bring it up after the interview tommorow. Good luck anyways, and I guess we’ll see you there.
-
30/03/2009 at 8:34 am #43745AnonymousInactive
I think they looked at all the ideas that came out of Ireland and thought if they seriously hadnt an idea they were going to pick that there was no point in bringing them over to England.
Good luck to the only southern Irish team ive heard of so far! Itd be great if ye did well and brought some recognition around here. -
31/03/2009 at 11:54 am #43750AnonymousInactive
Well we’ve gotten through to the interview stage anyway, plenty of work to be doing in the meantime but fingers crossed!
-
31/03/2009 at 4:00 pm #43752AnonymousInactive
Hope it all goes well for u and ur team Gizmo and im sure it will!
Oh and anyone that does the interview id really appreaciate as much information about it as possible as we plan on entering again next year and this time hopefully well know about the deadline more along the line of a month b4 it rather then less then a week this   -
31/03/2009 at 7:32 pm #43755AnonymousInactive
Nice one Gizmo, hope it went well for you guys. At least you won’t have to go for for the actual competition, eh. :D
-
01/04/2009 at 12:55 pm #43756AnonymousInactive
@dracula: Expect your deadline heads up to be sudden(ish). There is usually a last minute rush for funding from each province/country meaning even Dare doesn’t always know which locality is eligible until a week or so b4 hand.
-

You mean travel wise? Yea, its pretty handy alright, having my accommodation paid for would have been nicer though. ;) -
01/04/2009 at 7:45 pm #43758AnonymousInactive
What? I thought they were providing student accomadation. Dammnit, how do they expect us to actually live for the three months? What is the story with money and that? I heard they give each contestant 160 pounds or so a week to live on…but apart from that I actually know very little about what life is actually like during the summer months. Anyone know?
-
01/04/2009 at 7:55 pm #43759AnonymousInactive
The team from the south last year where in my class, and they got free student accommadation down in Dublin for the 10 weeks and money every week. I’m sure they’d have to give us free accomadation aswell, so I wouldn’t worry about that. Providing our teams get in :P
-
01/04/2009 at 8:41 pm #43760AnonymousInactive
How did it go for you guys Tumbelina? You guys looked tired and glad that it was over :D We were exactly the same, just so drained afterwards and glad that it was all over. Were you the really tall girl in the white I was talking to or the girl in the black who couldn’t get to the elevator fast enough? :D
I found the three guys to be pretty sound, really helped me not freeze up during the interview, I was afraid I was gonna do that  The projector died before our presentation could begin and we were quietly freaking out but it just needed to cool down thankfully. Would have sucked if all that work we put in was wasted. I travelled for 3 days pretty much for a 30 minute meeting…hope we get in!
-
01/04/2009 at 9:13 pm #43761AnonymousInactive
Ha, I’m the one who ran for the elevator :P We got a poster made for the game and I left it in that little waiting room during the presentation :(
Yeah the judges were pretty nice, though travelling to liverpool – not so nice. We got to the interview stage last year as well, dublin was so much handier.
Whoops, that was probably our presentation that over heated the projector. Sorry, anyway good luck!! Any idea when the results are out?
-
01/04/2009 at 9:34 pm #43762AnonymousInactive
15th of April apparently. You guys got a blog going for your game idea? Did you say you were from Dundalk? Is there a games course out there?
-
01/04/2009 at 9:48 pm #43763AnonymousInactive
Dam, that feels like ages away.
Yeah Dundalk I.T. computing in games development, my year was the first one of the course.
No blog set up. We never thought of that and we didn’t exactly have alot of time to prepare :PMy fingers are gonna be crossed for the next 2 weeks so :P

I may be wrong, but I cant remember any of the three specifically being artists. One guy was a producer though, not sure if I can say for what company. But they were all very fair and had good ideas, and were chatty during the few minutes before our turn WHEN THE PROJECTOR DECIDED TO DIE lol so that calmed any nerves the team had.
Good to hear about the accomadation. And yeah, 160/170 is very fair. Could live quite comfortably off that.
12 days till we find out. Best just put it out of my mind till then. :P

04/04/2009 at 1:00 pm #43771AnonymousInactive
I think one of the judges said he was the senior designer for real world games, one was something like the download manager for sony downloadable content and I can’t remember who the other guy was, but I think he was something to do with business, if that helps?
-
04/04/2009 at 5:28 pm #43772AnonymousInactive
I was surprised to find out Realtime worlds was in the UK, I thought they were a U.S. company.
-
04/04/2009 at 10:46 pm #43773AnonymousInactive
Ah, thought that was Realtime Worlds alright. Yup, they’re actually based in Dundee, literally a stones throw from where I live. Thanks for the info anyway folks, hopefully we don’t have any of the problems you guys had Squash. :)

-
05/04/2009 at 3:40 pm #43777AnonymousInactive
Nope, interviews are still to come for us. The Scottish ones are being held this Wednesday in Glasgow.
-
07/04/2009 at 11:33 am #43801AnonymousInactive
Well good luck Gizmo. Make sure you guys practice your presentation till you know it backwards, and be ready for any curve balls they might throw at you.
-
09/04/2009 at 1:13 pm #43820AnonymousInactive
Well we had our interview yesterday and I must say I think it went pretty well. Our judges were a Producer from Cohort Studios, a Senior Designer from Realtime Worlds and another Designer from Ninja Theory.
We got some positive feedback from the first two and the latter only had one concern regarding some of our tech/gameplay mechanics which we manged to nail. The Producer seemed extremely happy that we highlighted our SCRUM based development methodology and the designer liked the way we intend going for a more contemporary approach to level design, something which would be greatly aided by our central gameplay mechanic. The greatest compliment came from the RTW guy who said if we pulled off everything we said we could then it’d certainly be something he’d pay money for. :)
Overall I think we were all happy with how it went so fingers crossed! Best of luck to the rest of you guys anyway, it’d be great if we could have another Irish team in the competition again this year.
-
09/04/2009 at 5:25 pm #43824AnonymousInactive
Crikey sounds like it went well Gizmo! Got a blog going for your game or anything? Sounds interesting, but I can’t tell much about it so far.

Well here’s hoping Squash. The competition was pretty damn good up there as a lot of Abertay teams had some really good ideas but we’ll see how it goes. Still a week of waiting though, definitely not the most fun bit. No blog as of yet but if I can find some time in between this course work I’ll try and get something put together.
Congrats to Tumbelina, Guru and co on getting through anyway! Delighted to see an Irish team through. Feel free to drop me a PM when you’re coming over and I’d be happy to show you around the place. :)
-
10/04/2009 at 12:32 am #43829AnonymousInactive
Well done you guys! :D Im really glad a team got in from the Republic! You guys must be so relieved.
-
10/04/2009 at 11:46 am #43832AnonymousInactive
Well we were just informed we didn’t get through, ah well! At least we didn’t have to wait a full week to find out.
The rest of the team seem really interested in continuing to work on the game anyway so who knows, it may still be made. Still though, I’ll have enough on my plate with the thesis over the Summer.
Best of luck to the rest of you guys anyway and hope the competition goes well for you! :)
-
11/04/2009 at 2:19 pm #43836AnonymousInactive
Sorry to hear that Gizmo. Well, at least theres always next year for you! This is my last year for trying to get it, I won’t be eligable next year…

Hard luck Gizmo!! At least ye tried and ye got great feedback which means ye were on the right track. Maybe u can still apply next year with the way the rules are or they might even change the competition again next year.
-
14/04/2009 at 12:34 am #43849AnonymousInactive
Well done on making it into the competition. Hope you enjoy the experience and keep us updated.
Sorry that you didn’t get through, Gizmo. It would be great if you do decide to keep pushing forward with the game. It’ll be good experience for you.
Is there any word on the Northern Ireland team?

Yeah I was at it on Sunday!! Lots of really cool games to play! My friends were one of the winners (Pixel Pirates) so was a good day for them all!
-
25/08/2009 at 2:59 pm #44499AnonymousInactive
Yup, the two programmers for Pixel Pirates were mates on the MSc. course over here so delighted for them. Can’t wait to get my hands on the final version of the game but judging from the videos and feedback from folks around here it’s as fun as it looks.
-
26/08/2009 at 10:17 am #44501AnonymousInactive
Yep Colour Coded is a lot of fun to play :D I know one of the programmers from the team quite well, and know the rest of them too and they are a sound bunch and it was well deserved! :D Congrats to the other teams too.
