And there was me thinking that the post might have been about theoretical physics…

Sounds class……
The day we see realistically destructable geometry will be a god day for all! -

you mean the day they do it again, right? Red Faction still has the best breaking glass I can remember. And you could dig through walls.
I wish there was some paper on how they did that, actually… -

No doubt Lucas has it all patented by now, so no destructible terrain unless its done by Luke Skywalker forever more I’m afraid.Dave

GeoMod? I would have thought that stuff would be common knowledge by now. :?Oh and speaking of Indiana Jones, I just noticed this in a press release from LucasArts
Indiana Jones 2007 also features completely interactive Hot Set environments, where every setting is open-ended and completely destructible in a way that only next-generation consoles can deliver.[/quote:2ca8d7115d]
From that I gather its going to be console only, what utter rubbish.
Then again the last time they pulled this was with a game called Obi Wan and we all know how that one turned out…

The GeoMod/CSG destruction of surroundings in Red Faction wasn’t all that I had hoped for. I hope this DMM Industrial Magic looks as good as it sounds

Nope, know of none that have done it better, wisely steered clear of because it was only really doable in very controlled circumstances. It was a novelty device used a handful of times in Red Faction and was completely inconsistant outside of those areas, eg. you couldn’t blast through a wall if it had a locked door in it. It was definitely a missed opportunity and I for one was very diasappointed when I played it, for me it was once again all talk and no trousers

Ah, I only ever played the demo hence my lack of real disappointment. I did hear it was a missed opportunity in some places though, that example of locked doors being impregnable was the one PC Zone used also back in the day.
Hrm, I remember seeing a trailer for a game awhile ago that claimed it had “fully deformable terrain” now what the hell was it… :?

Geomod was a bit of a gameplay nightmare. Oh, so thats all use of spacial constraints for gameplay gone. I mean how do you build levels to control the “feel” and “flow”.. and simple “get the next item/key” logic when your core usp allows the player to bust through any wall (so they had to cheat with iron walls etc). Enjoyable but limited fun.

That wasn’t realistic. You shot at a wall and a chunk was blown off. But it wasn’t based on the physics of the material.
It was good fun……but not realistic! -

FarCry was supposed to have deformable terrain, blowing craters in the ground and what not in some early videos, don’t know if it made it into the final version though, once again it only worked in limited wide open areas, nowhere near the roots of a tree for example…

It made it in use hand grenades or rocket launchers and you can create small craters. Not sure if it was added with a later patch though. I dont remember it the first time I played through it.

You might be thinking of “Tread Marks” no? The game by Seamus McNally, was it not?
But seriously, has anyone any papers/links on the subject? Cos it’s one of those things I’ve tried to look for, but I always end up with hundreds of unrelated results first :?
