Hello!
I’ve been asked to speak on the legal issues involved with embedded advertising in games at a conference in Ireland later in the year- its a really interesting area (just take my word for it!), but it would really help if I had a range of good examples. So I was hoping the good folk of GD.ie might send me some screen shots, post some links or give me some examples.

This was quite high profile pre-US elections

I remember some papers at some media and games conferences on this – have you looked at the papers in the DIGRA library for previous examples?
Aphra.

Thanks Aphra – will check that out. Hopefully the articles will have some screen shots that I can use as visual aids – to try to keep my audience awake and interested!

Dave Perry is a big proponent of in-game ads. Check out his site, dperry.com.

I met with a few of the companies who do in-game advertising, so there’s a lot of ad industry stuff they’ve had to make work online. if you’ve specific questions about it, give me a pm

Also I remember Nokia having a lot of ads in the Splinter Cell series.
Hope it helped.

Mustn’t forget Superfrog – in game advertising/placement from 1993.
eg:

(better example, note lucosade bottle in left pane – probably better shots out there)Not a half bad platform game either…

Oh there are higher profile examples than that
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Gladiators
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cool_SpotPepsi-man (which looks great…)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkvSLzug3NkI’m sure there are earlier examples, perhaps on the Atari 2600 and the like
Hmm, maybe I should write this speech for you ;)

Thanks KK, yes please. On second thoughts, I suspect your rates would be too high for me!! :D
I plan to start the talk with a series of images and clips before launching into the powerpoint stuff, so these will help.
After I give the talk I will publish a paper and will post up a link from our website, in case anyone has any interest in it.
If anyone knows any Irish companies using embedded advertising or product placements in their games that would be of interest.

I remember some pretty gratuituous and offensively stupid ads for some kind of chewing gum in one Splinter Cell…the one after Pandora Tommorow I think. And I am talking full shots of chewing gum packets. Good game though.
I don’t see having characters in games using Nokia phones or Dell monitors in office spaces as advertisement really…just grounds the game more in reality, which certain kinds of games like Splinter Cell can certainly use.

Hey there, I dont suppose anyone is aware of subliminal advertising being used in games? There are plenty of blogs and articles mentioning subliminal advertising, but I have not found an example of use.
In British Columbia gaming companies must certify that there is no intentional subliminal advertising and/or messaging contained in certain games, which suggests that it does occur.

Off the top of my head, the best I can do is Doom2, ‘kill john romero’
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=135427There was one in diablo 2 as well:
http://www.eeggs.com/items/98.htmlIt’s subliminal, but in an audio sense, not in the sense of splicing a frame in.
I think there was also something in the readme file, written backwards, like, ‘there are no backwards messages in diablo 2’. (or maybe that was d1?)
