sorry to contribute to thread bloat but hey this doesn’t go under any thread I can find..
Is anyone following fightbox on BBC2 on Friday evenings?
I see they have a new call out for the web tournament so if you want to design a character….the Web Tournament will run for two weeks and will close at midday (12:00) on the 28th November 2003.

There is an article in Develop this month absolutelly slating that show. Some quotes:
“It was billed a brilliant hybrid of interactive entertainment and television, introducing the public to the concept of games and stuff. When actually, it completely misrepresents the medium, with a series of dire mini-games whcih not even the contestants nor presenters appear to understand……. The characters are poorly animated, the games derivative, the format patronising; in fact the only redeeming feature about it is that it has an end.”
It goes on….
I’ve downloaded the startup kit or whatever it is and I have to say that the game absolutelly terrible, bad controls and really annoying introductory training. I didn’t get any further than that, and thankfully I haven’t seen the show from what I’ve heard about it.
On the plus side….the BBC does have that war show, don’t know the name of it, where they put contestants up fighting roman wars. Looks like they are using Medieval Total War to run the simulation. Quiet impressive.

I agree with most of that review. We saw this touted in Edinburgh under the innovation panel and it certainly looked good and sounded like it had potential at that stage.
Hwoever, I tuned in one evening and found it appaling. Unwatchable actually.
I do like that Time Commanders series, a much much better inetgartion of the game into a TV format than Fright Box.

It’s finished for the season. It was Thursdays on BBC2 I think. I saw most of the episodes if you have questions.
No idea where you’d get a copy though, short of calling the BBC or waiing for a re-run on BBC3/4 or UKGold.

Someone from the BBC gave myself and a few others a talk last summer about work they are up to with regards to interactive television and BBC games in general.
They have some potentially interesting ideas with regards to kids shows. They had one particular one, C-Agents I think it was called and unfortuntelly doesn’t seem to be on their website anymore that allowed for team of kids to play games during the week and dependent on the weeks proformance, bonuses were assigned to the teams. They were talking about how they could make this more interactive with TV at the time, but looks like it may be no more…
The BBC do seem to have a serious interest in this area though.Damian.
