Hello everyone,
I would just like to inform you that the International Game Developers Association has now opened its IGDA Dublin Chapter.
I only discovered it while on my sweeping rounds and I am very sure that it was not there yesterday. Visit http://www.igda.org/Forums and then go into the European Chapters and will you see it there.I have no other information on this at all but it is obviously a right step in the right direction.
Perhaps someone here can shed some light on it?

Ronny,
Indeed an Irish chapter is in formation and the first meeting of the Irish committe will probably be before the next shindig on the 27th of November in Dublin.
There have been various discussions within the forums about this and full information will be posted soon in the news section.

Thank you for the information Aphra. While I was aware that there was talks on the Game Developers Ireland forum I was not aware that we had progressed to this stage. I will certainly listen out for any latest developments on this matter.

Given the current state of the industry in Ireland, would it be of more benefit to have an IGDA Ireland Chapter?
If IDGA require that the location has to be a city though, Dublin would be the obvious choice.

I believe that naming the forum Dublin was an oversight and moves are afoot to change it to Ireland..glad we noticed before someone from the People’s Republic of Cork noticed!
and before you say that I am biased I am a cultchie as well..

Although I am not certain I think that the IGDA requires a chapter to be named after a city; there can be no country chapter. So sadly I do not think that we will be able to change the chapter name to reflect the whole island of Ireland.
I will now search through the IGDA website and try to find the link to confirm my suspicions.
Have any of the coordinators yet to talk to the IGDA about changing the chapters name?

I’m just glad the Torc guys didn’t get to pick the location… what “city” is it you guys are based in again? :)

Especially if they are aware of the state of the industry at the moment, and that it would be a potentially short term solution ( although I’m sure that most people over here would be happy to continue with an Ireland chapter. A lot of the US cities cover huge areas and populations, the entire Ireland chapter would be covering the equivalent of less than one of their major cities, eg New York )
Plus, there are a few Dublins ( and the odd Belfast ) in the US alone, that could be a bit confusing.
Any others want to post an opinion on this? Maybe an IDGA Dublin, IDGA Belfast, IDGA Mu… Donegal, Cork etc would be more beneficial in the long term, but for now it’s IMHO that maybe a global IDGA Ireland would provide a focal point from where, in the future, the other branches could sprout if and when it gets too large.

Having searched the IGDA website I have came across this information.
“Proposed location must be a city or region, NOT a state, province, or country.”
The above information can be found at this page.
So the chapter name will probably need to remain as Dublin.
Since we can not come to an agreement about whether the chapter should be in Dublin or Cork maybe we could come to an agreement and be based in Belfast……what? no one up for that idea? ;)
In my opinion seeing as Dublin is the largest city on the island it should then recognised as the chapter title.

Feck, took me ages to type that eMail above, wish I’d read your latest one first Ronny! :)
IDGA Dublin it has to be then! We’ll get our IDGA Befast one eventually. Which will of course have better parties than the Dublin one. :)

Mal – Take notice of how we posted in the exact same minute. If only I had of posted that info sooner I would of saved you a lot of time. ;)
It goes without saying that right now we should all be focusing our attention on the Dublin chapter but further down the line a Belfast chapter is definitely a possibility. Then of course the two would be closely associated.
While talking to one of the people behind this Dublinchapter I agreed with him in saying that we should begin the IGDA Dublin chapter at a steady pace and work very closely with Game Developers Ireland. Therefore the Game Developers shindigs could serve as Dublin Chapter meetings. Hopefully this chapter will gain momentum and we will help Irish game development to progress into the 21st century.

Ta for the vote of confidence Mal! I believe there already exists an IDGA Muff chapter, there was a tussle at the back of St. Mary’s hall last Wednesday night because they were double booked with the diving clubs fortnightly shindig!!

Incase some of you are not yet aware our IGDA chapter has now officailly been changed to the IGDA Ireland chapter as opposed to its original name, IGDA Dublin chapter.
So the whole island is now being represented. Great to see that the IGDA made an exception to the city name rule by letting us choose the name of our whole island.

As Ronny has correctly pointed out the local IGDA chapter has undergone a name-change. It took a bit of negotiation with the IGDA due to the ‘no chapter named after a country’ rule, but after reading the postings on this forum and a couple of mails I’d received, we felt the name change was appropriate at this point in time in order to include the whole country – even those of you unfortunate enough to be born outside of our fair city!
If at some point in the future a second chapter is set up (even if it’s in Muff, Pete!) the hassle of changing the name back would be worth it for the inclusiveness it represents just now, not to mention the greater influence it’ll represent when talking to govt. or semi-state representatives
For the record, the ‘Dublin’ tag was assigned to us rather than chosen
Cheers,
Tony -

Folks,
the Ireland Chapter site was updated over the weekend. You can find it here (still called ‘Dublin’ for some reason, but I’m working on it!)
Cheers,
