“and it has made us push ourselves further than ever to create a title in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that will hopefully redefine the Grand Theft Auto series and revolutionize open-ended gameplay and video game production values.”
I love R* ;)

Meh, it’ll just be GTA:VC with a couple extra features, just like GTA:VC was GTA 3 with a couple extra features.
Don’t get me wrong, it’ll be a good game, its what Rockstar do well. Just not expecting anything revolutionary here. Expecting a good radio station thoguh ;) -

I wonder what setting they will use this time, it must be a horrible pressure to come up with a ‘Gaiden’ sequel like Vice City.
Will they simply move it to the 1970’s or set it in an Afghanistan\ middle east world :p

As usual, Rockstar will do what they do best:
Scrutinise the San Andreas / Bay Area region from every possible angle (Geographical & Cultural) and extract drop-dead gameplay, character, vehicle & level design mixed with some great narrative and of course MUSIC.I think we can look forward to the Golden Gate Bridge type action with some Bay area type level design and hopefully an Earthquake or two to shake things up :)
This is the only available hint at Art Direction & it looks like some sort of Tattoo (possibly a hint in itself):

Still fairly difficult to know exactly how the art direction will go.

As for the setting, I think its set in the early 90’s “West Coast Gangsta” era…..so expect songs from that time like “NWA” “Snoop Doggy Dogg” etc.
There will be other stations too I presume, so they will probably throw in some other songs from that era like Guns ‘n Roses! ;)

Stop tarnishing the games industry with your quantity over quality policy, your games SUCK and everyone knows it……although I hear the new James Bond game is good………………………..NOT!!!!!!! -

bitch bitch bitch.
Honestly now, if e.a offered every wannabe game designer a job on this site, how many do you think would turn em down? VERY few. i mean everyone says that creativity is gone out the window because of the actions of companies like e.a but personally i commend them for the simple fact that they have stayed at the top financially in an industry that can chew up a company beacause of one bad release.
They do release the odd good game, fifa games made the quantum leap that eventually gave us pro evo, need for speed underground exploited the whole illegal racing and car modding thing but now other games are following suit AFTER e.a made some headway. i thought the two towers was very good, it wont win any accolades for innovation but it hits the spot and provides entertainment in any case. and i seem to remember the sims getting games journo’s in a fuss on its initial release…

C’mon, thats the most ridiculous counter argument I have heard in a long while. What has that got to do with anything?
How many people here can say that they actually like the company they currently work for, especially if its a large corporation? I will hazard a guess at very few. If someone can pick and choose any job based on their admiration or love of a company then they are eithera) VERY talented
or
b) They are the owners best buddy
;)Just because most people here wouldn’t turn down a job with EA doesn’t somehow negate the fact that 90% of their games are complete pap and that they basically consume to survive rather than create to survive.
I would personally rate EA lower than the much maligned Microsoft in terms of games development. At least Microsoft are trying to create original and creative games. A company like EA which has HUGE revenue should be able to afford to take risks with creating great original games, instead they just buy genuinely talented dev houses and that in turn leads to the most talented individuals in said dev house leaving, basically leaving EA with a new brand name that means shit to any knowledgable gamer.

I think Nooptical is right, EA have a mass revenue each year, pumping even a 8th of that into an original title is hardly suicide for the Company, at the very least they should consider something outside the Sports/Film industry, it is obvious the team behing the Two Towers and the Return of the King are fairly talented, yet I garuantee that that they will not persue a new “Fantasy Title” come next fall, instead huddling together trounching out a shite tie in with the new bloody Hulk film or something….
I tell you EA are the games industries Hollwood, and its only a matter of time before Quality takes over from Quantity…..

I’ve repeatedly stated my feelings on this subject on several other threads on this site, so to reiterate in short:
EA can make good sports games….non-sports games hit a 90% rate of being crap.
Why do EA games sell even though they are crap….marketing power. If you get your game publicised everywhere and buy large selling franchise names like LOTR and HP you are guaranteed to sell them to Joe Public due to his lack of guided information on ‘good games’. Due to this, they get accustomed to crap games and thus being to not feel they are being shafted when they continually get them and so the cycle continues.
And I still mantain that NFS:U is crap. To me it looks really rushed. Street Racing Syndicate is an underground racing game that was scheduled to be released at the same time as NFS:U but was held back and should be out soon I think. That game is what NFS should have been, but due to there not being anything other underground racing games out there people took what was on offer and didn’t care about the quality*deep breathes*

I could see myself at EA in the Future – its good to get experience and going to one of the biggest and most successful publisher makes sense.
It is actually possible that I could get a job there, something that I couldn’t get at my beloved Nintendo….Unless they set up shop in Europe.
Plus I imagine the pay wouldn’t be bad at EA.
-
30/07/2004 at 10:51 am #13726AnonymousInactive
The more good people working at EA, the better chance their games will be good too. Although I think their biggest problem probably lies in the fact that they are a huge company and thus have lots of management wanting to get their say in and so higher level management make their presence known by making bad decisions about games just because they want it known it was them that made a decision.
As for pay….its not bad, however, if you worked for them in the UK, you’d be living in London so it’d want to be. I’m getting slightly less than friends in EA but I live in Derby rather than London, so I think I’m probably on a par if not better off here on a monatory basis.
-
30/07/2004 at 10:57 am #13729AnonymousInactive
I dont want to live anywhere near London, guess I’d have to go to a different EA office :D

As for ‘EA bashing’, Tony, msot people bash MS for their business. I choose EA as my target….I know they can withstand any rebuttal by quoting significant figures, so I don’t feel guilt.
-
01/08/2004 at 2:24 pm #13779AnonymousInactive
wow im a hate figure.
thanks to the couple of people who backed me up.
look its all about money and if e.a managed to play their cards right and come out on top in an industry where so many others have failed is that not admirable?
I think too many people blame e.a on the lack of creativity and the liquidation of smaller developers who could not cut in finaciallly. its obvious that these teams had talent but life’s a bitch and sometimes you have to roll with the punches. and as for omega’s comment in regards to why do e.a not put 8% of thier money into something original. what about battlefield 1942? the first game to make the vehicles thing work properly.
i think people just like going up against the big guns on thier own little crusade because its in human nature to lash out at the guys at the top and maybe people in the industry feel “opressed” by e.a but i dont think they are the problem with the industry.and by the way i do have ambition and all that, i just like to be a little realistic before i go out and say: “im gonna take over nintendo and same the games industry” or someting to that effect.

Or much better case studies would be “The Sims” and “Black and White”.

Not sure but I think Canada is where Bond stuff is usually done.EA have the management too make things happen and so they have grown into the giant they are today and should be congratulated for it. Most developers don’t have that cos of the way the industry began.
I amy moan and bitch about EA but its not that I hate them as an entity and what they stand for, its cos 9 out of 10 times I wouldn’t buy an EA game. Not because its EA but because of its quality. Considering the number of games they produce I think thats a bit bad.
Just looking at my games and the only EA ones I have are MOH (which I was disappointed with) and NHL2002 (which i enjoyed) -

It is the duty of all companies but especially those the size of EA (for example) to balance the priority placed on short-term profits versus the medium to long-term development & value of their brand.[/quote:0f8b1970f4] & the industry as a whole.
EA is an example; it could be argued a bad one. Perhaps Atari would be a clearer example in this case but it could just as easily be company X ;)

It is the duty of all companies but especially those the size of EA (for example) to balance the priority placed on short-term profits versus the medium to long-term development & value of their brand. This in my view is where many big companies that should know better continually fall over. The simple fact is that bad games lose money, if not in the short-term then certainly in the long-term. Bad games are bad for business; it’s not simply a creative or critical sensitivity![/quote:fa3ff8d8e0]
There is another angle to take at this, companies like EA and Atari have to look at the short term, because simply most games are sold within a few weeks of launch, so they need a very focused campaign to get the games out into people’s consoles. I do agree with what you are saying, but the simple matter of economics means that they have to ship a game as soon as the thing is ready, and now any delays can cause detrimental effects to sales, either through people giving up (Driver 3) because they released a shoddy buggy game that is hilarious it even got released, or Doom 3 which despite all the delays, and due to them seemingly making very strange decisions to get the game out has still been hit by pirates, and that’s a full week before the game hits retail here in Ireland.
Very few companies are in the position where they can release a game and have it sit as a sleeper hit (ie quality games like Ico, aimed at a certain demographic of gamers.) Sure, it might not be a commercial success in the way some of the more mainstream games can be, but at the end of the day, EA’s main customer, and the reason that they are the size they are today is because they catered for the mass market, using mass market brands. Fifa, NFL, Harry Potter, James Bond.
They are a publishing giant who can afford to do what they want because they have the massive sales that these mass market, and not necessarily the best type of game by my own standards, but from my reviewing days, the type of gamer that I am is outnumbered by about 20 to 1 by normal gamers, young families who want kid friendly games, children and casual gamers who get a game every so often. That’s where the money is, and as soon as developers realise that making games specifically for the type of gamer you hope will play it, then you can start seeing the bigger picture (where the money is), because there are only a few big games that can hit the hardcore market and be a success. Yes, Doom. Yes Half Life. Yes, Pro Evolution Soccer. But remember that for every game that makes millions of quid, there have been dozens, if not hundreds of games that were released that didn’t even make anything close to their development costs back.

-
03/08/2004 at 2:20 pm #13807Jamie McKeymaster
Well that’s the reality of games, they sell for maybe 6 weeks, and after that generally the only other chance they get to make additional sales is through two means: controversy (ie manhunt’s recent re-entry to the charts), or through platinum sales status, Xbox Classics, Platinum range on PS2 etc.

Nice to see a non-Caucasian as the leading character for once! I embrace this move in the direction of gaming equality.
Now, if he turns out to have a flat chested, unattractive, big nosed brute of a girlfriend, then the industry really is making progress.
On seconds thoughts, that’s a degree of political correctness I wouldn’t relish embracing.

Real progress would be handing over the lead to a female, don’t you think Boadle?

<Real progress would be handing over the lead to a female, don’t you think Boadle?>
No. No, I don’t Omega.
The Lead Character being of a gender that does not match the typical gender makeup within the social niche you are attempting to portray is not progress. It is a Political Correctness-forced weakening of the subject matter, and plainly unrealistic.
Something akin to the situation Hollywood found itself in in the eighties (wherein most blacks were good guys, or highly sympathetic characters), and TV finds itself now (with regard to portraying people with disabilities; or homosexuals, positively).
Progress would be picking a subject matter that would promote females as strong characters in games, not simply transposing them into male arenas (of which gang culture and car theft is traditionally one).

Personally, I think *that* game did the incursion of female characters into games a massive disservice, which the industry is still reeling from.
It set a milestone that other companies aspire to, repelled more woman gamers than it attracted, and re-inforced the pastimes percieved link with sweaty-palmed adolescent boys.

Careful Lewis, Damian’s boys probably won’t be too happy with you saying that! ;)I thought TR was a good game, though I do agree with what you said in part, it led way for sex-crazed lesbians in Fear Factor as well as other cases that just make you bow your head in shame at being involved in this industry. On the other hand TR was a huge financial success and at the end of the day this is a business.

I remember the glowing EDGE review. They said it was an excellent game with a lot of different activities, and so much more to it than just Volleyball (which was excellently implements, if I remember the article correctly).

How can perving on a couple of cyber chic’s be good for you, actually let me re-iterate that question: How can perving on a couple of Cyber chic’s be good for mr manhood there…..ahem, it’s almost like digital rape or something, honestly Tecmo give up on the women already, make more Ninja Gaidens will ya(actually now that I think of it most of the women in that had perfect breasts too, whilst all the while being quite wet!)
I’ve to go to the jacks…….sorry.

Umm..just picked up edge and they have a preview of GTA:SA.
Shiite!
This game sounds hot….from the little things like cosmetic appearance; haircuts, weight (over-eating/exercising) to 3 BIG cities with huge countryside areas in between. Seems they’ve improved the gun fighting aspect also and they even have BMXs

There was a big article in this months (I’m sure you’ve seen it) about Treasure.
It said they have made some fantastic games, and are very prolific, but it did concede they have made some stinkers!

Wasn’t overly impressed with the screen-shots they gave of GTA.
Wasn’t like a Doom2 screen-shot making you want to buy the game. -

Yeah I read the Treasure feature, it was interesting and also had some constructive critisism which is always good, still Gradius V will be mine!
As for the shots of GTA SA, I agree with Omen, they weren’t at all that inspiring…… not to sure about the urban settings.

Thanks Ian… but I’ll pass!
Less than a month till it’s release now and I’m doing my best to avoid hearing or reading about this game. I want to just buy the game, get home, then be absolutely amazed by its brilliance and play it for the whole weekend. I would rather not have any of the new features of story spoiled. I soaked up every little detail about Metal Gear Solid 2 before it came out and that really ruined it for me. It wasn’t until I came back to it a good few months later I realised it was actually a really enjoyable game.
Of course I’ve heard a few things about San Andreas and I must say that I cannot wait. :)
