Instead of having an identical forum why not add a twist?
From what I’ve been told you’re all NWIFHE guys. Maybe it should become the new forum for everything nice and ICE. ;)
Good luck with it.

its not been set up as a “rival” for this site, that would just be stupid!! about 70% of my time online is spent on this site! and i spend alot of time on the net researching and learning. the site is basically set up so we can chat to other students training to become a game developer, exsisting game developers, “elite” game developers and anyone generally with a passion for playing and making games. simple as that.
woops, was supposed to reply to the previous topic!! NO MORE BEER FOR ME :(

Can there be an Artists section in the Forums, a few of the lads have posted their work up here so it’d be good to have a designated area for that?

I have to say, the front page is really nice and well presented. The forums page however, leaves a lot to be desired. Harsh background colour, text and buttons on forum selection are quite large and unattractive. Doesn’t seem to follow the style of the front page. Changing pages causes a brighter page to display while loading and the contrast hurts the eyes…. Really thought it was looking very professional until I got to the forums :(
oh, I do like the idea of having a user review section, i mentioned that here before but it was never implemented….

The “Point” of it, is a group of students setting up a forum to share their work with others and to encourage like minded people to do the same. Sure there are probably loads of other places like this, but I dont think there is any harm in trying. It has only been going for about a month which is why we dont have much going on at the moment.

Consider this, we have two months left at NWIFHE. after that some of us will be part of Incubate (or whatever its called), the rest of us have to make our own path. So how else are we going to stay in contact with each other? I sure as h*** don’t want to just forget about all the cool people I have gotten to know in the last 8 months.

I don’t think there’s any need for the hostilities. You don’t want to give the ICE course a reputation it most certainly doesn’t deserve. Tony was simply offering an opinion – one that many think is quite right and has been mentioned on several occasions now.Look at the popular game dev communities throughout the world that have been successful. They all have an angle that attracts people. This one in particular is aimed mainly towards people on our island to help the Irish development community grow and discuss our industry.
Personally I’d push the fact that it’s for students primarily from NWIFHE. Perhaps have a forum for people to ask questions about the college and give them an opportunity to question students on the courses available there.
Nice site, by the way! You may want to cut down on the number of forums, it’s a little cluttered. Be sure to include GD.ie on the links page! :)

31/03/2005 at 11:47 pm #19195AnonymousInactive
Maybe there could be a special Students section on the forum, for both students keeping in touch, and also for general student-style questions.
As there will ( very soon ) be more game development students, than actual game develppers, in Ireland, I think this could only help keep them in contact with each other, promote gd.ie, and maybe even get a few of them working together as a team.
Also, a Work In Progress / Show Finished Work, section might not be a bad idea. I really enjoy seeing what other people in Ireland are working on.
Will post these two to the suggestions section now.
Regards…

I think I did see it, and seeing as I have no recollection of what it looked like then, I guess the improvement has been considerable :)I think there are a few really nice touches to the site, its really simple and yet very elegant…don’t know if you’re allowed to show images of games without someone’s say so though…

Thanks for the tips. Ill defenatly take the students part in to consideration, as youre right about the number of students in game developing is always increasing. However I dont want the site to only appeal to students and Ireland, so I want to cover as many things as possible (hence the amount of sections!)

There should be a differant slant on it, like many people have suggested.
I have no real reason to sign up for your site at the moment, because I have been using this site for longer. I know the people on this site better, and I am happy with these forums.
Your site at the moment, doesn’t offer anything new for me that I can’t get or do at this site, so I don’t see why I should bother signing up and participating.I’m not downplaying your idea or efforts, I am just being honest, in that this country already has a very well run and popular site for game developers. So a definite differant slant is needed for your site to be a success I think.

If something was perceived as lacking on this site, why not simply set up new forums/threads?
There are also many professional developers browsing or actively participating on this site, and you will lose out on that perspective
I guess the main thing I’m driving at is that the country and its dev community is simply too small to support so many dev sites (the busiest time this site has ever had was only 72 users!)
From an IGDA perspective my goal is to promote the industry island-wide, and given the size of the industry here, I personally believe this is best served by everyone rowing in the same direction. As the axiom has it – when you want to dig a ten foot hole, you don’t dig ten holes one foot deep…

I agree, I think I’ve only ever seen about 20 concurrent users. We are trying to attract rather than split the ‘Irish vote’ by having the everyone here at gd.ie
Its also a good mix here.
You site is nice btw, if we cant twist your arm then at least visit us. Or call – and dont say you “lost our number”.

Ah yes, thats my favourite excuse. Or
“I was afraid to call because I forgot your name”
“I tried calling but I think you gave me the wrong number”
“I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else” -

I really appreciate the input but as I have said this is NOT just for the Irish community as people think It is, I mainly set this up for students in our class to show there work and keep in touch and I’d just thought id see if any one else was intrested, in the old forum we had members from mexico and india, and so I thought I would find out if anyone one else was intrested. Obvisouly not… I never even knew this forum exsisted until the other day, so im not trying to compete against it, im not trying to take anything away from it im simply trying something out on my own….and not just for the irish community…thats why I choose worldforums and not irishforums.

We are just offering our input is all.
I was under the impression that this was being mooted as an Irish Games Developers site, but obviously it isn’t! No harm done…. ;) -
01/04/2005 at 12:25 pm #19239AnonymousInactive
Seriously I appreciate the input, but I dont know why people are thinking that this is for the Irish community. Why would I try and compete against GD.ie ? I obviously would not stand a chance.
I suppose people would think that the way cobi7 posted it….

I am in shock. My post was considered hostile. I apologise if that’s the way it came off but I was just trying to explain why I feel it’s important. Also in terms of users, a friend of mine from the USA (New Mexico) was one of the members of the old forum and should hopefully be with us again soon. He does some production with Java.

Can’t we go on, or on and on and on and on……..Nooptical :)
Hey I have two suggestions, (which I know I know, belong in the suggestions thread and not here really):
Why don’t I set up an Irish game developers site in Irish ( could I possibly be more elitist than that! why even google have done it, Latin / Udru ?) Only people called MAl with Red hair could join. Although we can make exceptions for acedemics or indeed all people who have low red blood cell counts. the clithe rinne (or whatever I, me, myself & our team decide) is given life…ah ha ha…I vont to drink your blooood ah ha ha………vorld domination here ve come Meister Bond…..ah ha ha….phew just got the tablet (& I don’t mean wacom) in time.
And maybe cause it’s getting to late friday afternoon:
I think specifically the GD.ie Salmon of knowledge award title should be changed to the ‘Blowfish of Bullshit Award’ to allow me to win some thing although I haven’t earned it, don’t deserve or merit it, have no experience of saltwater fish or agriculture, why not me, we, why not I, us we, ourselves, shouldn’t I see my name in lights,…..even headlights……………………ops

jeepers…I go away for a couple of days and this all happens!
Look good luck with your own endeavour and we hope you visit here too…
I like the idea of a students thread on the forums…the forums are currently being ported and Johnnyslim is working on that. We are going to have threads on art and programming etc…but the technical issues come first….
by the way, ..we can’t stop this site at the borders….so anyone is welcome to post! We don’t check passports…
