I thought this might be a good place to start an ‘introductions’ thread.

I know we have done something similar on the mailing list recently, and the face-to-faces meet-ups are great, but a more considered round of introductions might help to establish the various areas of interest and expertise we hold. With that in mind, ahem…

Good idea! As you mentioned, some of us have already met up, but it would be good to get more of a background on a lot of the people on this forum ( remember, you can edit your postings later to add in new stuff ).

Name: Malachy Duffin, Previous positions: Programmer / 3D Artist / Game Designer / Soil Relocation Engineer

I used to work as a console programmer for Sony in London, and for Shiny Entertainment ( of MDK / Earthworm Jim fame ) in California as well as the VR department for IBM before returning home to help start up canDo in Belfast ( http://www.candomultimedia.com ) who worked with another Irish studio, Taintech, a few years ago. Between canDo’s dormant periods ( it was a lot tougher to start a games company in Ireland years ago! :( ), I also worked as a game designer for Chello ( interactive TV in holland ) and as a 3D artist for NaN, the makers of GameBlender, before they went bust ( now opensourced @ http://www.blender.org )

My focus with my colleagues at canDo for the last year or so was on interactive Web 3D content ( both game related and virtual product related ), which we received some awards etc for… unfortunately we seemed to be ahead of our time a bit as this field probably won’t be generally profitable for a number of years, but Conrad ( who is running canDo at the mo ) is getting a lot of commerical interest from some large companies at the mo, so canDo will hopefully be sponsoring some drinks at the parties in the not so distant future!

You can see some of the 3D stuff we worked on at canDo online right now here…

3D Stress Ball Anyone here remember Marble Madness ( or more recently Super Monkey Ball ), this uses the excellent Havok physics engine Xtra with Shockwave 3D ( currently in beta, will be released as a standalone game for PC and Mac ).
      http://www.candomultimedia.com/3dStressBall
3D Balls Up Another update to a retro game genre ( Thrust / Gravitar )
      http://www.candomultimedia.com/3dBallsUp
Entry for “The Big 3D” competition ( #55 ) A cool web 3D entry with 3 Havok based games sections, and a 3D streaming surround cinema!
      http://www.candomultimedia.com/3dBallsUp
Various 3D web games Small web 3D games that can be branded ( see http://www.mcvuk.com ( the leading UK games industry magazine ) in their games section ).
      http://www.candomultimedia.com/games/demos.htm
Various 3D eLearning / eSales type interactive presentations 3D Brains, Cars, Houses, Furniture, even a streaming DNA viewer! All of them are easy to use with our single mouse click / drag IP code!
      http://www.candomultimedia.com/demos.htm
http://www.havok.com to see some major names in the games industry! Although I’ve only been at Havok 2 months, I’ve already met some of the top developers from the US and UK who are going to be using Havok 2 in their up and coming games! If I hear any of them mention about Ireland and it’s game development industry, I’ll be sure to mention this website!

Hopefully I’ll be able to meet some triple A developers soon without having to get on a plane! ;) And I’m hoping that as the games industry in Ireland spawns and matures, hopefully there’ll be an option for up and coming game developers to be able to stay in Ireland and learn their trade ( and make good money of course! ) rather than go overseas to work in the industry!

Who’s next for posting some info? :D

      Hello all,
I’m a fourth year computer science student in Cork specialising in the area of graphics for my degree. My main interests are in the areas of global illumination, realtime/non-realtime raytracing, next generation hardware rendering techniques. However, in the past few months I’ve been doing lots of realtime 3d software rendering, due to a college project.

      Regards,
      Eoin.

      Hi All,

My name is Michael Griffin, and some of you I know from being involved in this industry ‘officially’ for the last 3 years! (Hi Mal / Aphra!)

I am the CEO of Kapooki Games (a full time game developer), which was founded in 2000. Over the last 3 years we have developed a number of game concepts for varying platforms, such as PC / PC Online / Wireless and we are now gearing up for a PC/Console title Alpha Build. We have worked with a number of international firms such as Microsoft, Deutsche Telekom, GameSpy and O2….

We have learned many lessons, and are now teamed up with two major game industry figure heads/experts based in the UK (route to market, credibility, contacts, strategy advise, Finance etc.)

We have a strong track record of raising our own finance, have an excellent team, strong project management skills, 2 leading industry experts adding their insights/advice and representation and a strong IP portfolio.

We wish everyone involved in this industry the best of luck!! We certainly believe that Irish game developers will achieve success in the near future…

      Best regards to everyone,

I’m currently studying a BSC in Computer Science at Griffith College and am in my first year.

I’m an avid gamer and want to go into games development once I graduate (or else go over to Abertee to do their masters in games development)

I’ve done some stuff with irishplayer.com (recently closed up)

Hi folks… My name is Ian, I’m a games programmer currently working with Denki (in Dundee, Scotland). I’m Irish, but I had to move over here to get work in games. Anyway it’s brilliant that there’s a bit of interest in creating a games industry back home, I’d love to see a few small Irish games studios appearing over the next few years… cheers

      Hello

      I’m 17

      (It all starts here……hopefully)

I got here from gamesindustry.biz and because the edge forums are closed for unexplained reasons.

What I did notice one day when watching a documentary on computer games about two months ago, was that every second one of the people interviewed had the remains of an irish accent and an irish second name.I wonder what the percentae of irish people working in england in the games industry actually is? any ideas?

      Greetings all,

Pretty tight group at the moment, hopefully will expand with time.

I am from the west of Ireland, working in the localisation for the past 3 years, do a fair bit of Photoshop and Flash work. In my spare time I design levels for game on a basic theme. Anyone remember the map builder for Red Alert? Done a few bots and modified gifs in some games. Fairly basic stuff.
Qualifications are patchy- no degrees here, just alot of interest.
Jiggle around with VB also when I have the time.

I came here from GameIndustry.biz also. That Rob Fahey really knows his stuff.

I’m another one doing the course in Abertay in Dundee.

Course is very good with top people in the industry linked to the place. (Dave Jones went here and still keeps in touch).

Dundee is home to Denki, VIS, Visual Sciences and Real Time Worlds so there is a good communittee in the place.

Hi, my name’s Kieran Nolan. For my masters degree I built a prototype arcade game called ‘Bionic Roshambo’, a video game version of Rock, Paper, Scissors that uses hand gesture recognition through custom built glove controllers. It was in Edge Magazine (#119) and is up on the education section of Gamasutra.com. If you want to check it out the url is http://keyo.net/bionicroshambo. Also my portfolio/cv site is here

      Hello Everyone,

I’m an artist/3d Modeller, born in Dublin, Art School in London. I moved to the San Fransisco Bay Area in 1988 and worked on TV Graphics for a couple of years before Joining Atari Games in 1991, I worked on arcade games for four years (Metal Maniax, Airborne, San Fransisco Rush) before moving north to Seattle in the late 90’s, to work at Zombie Games, we finished “SpecOps” (fps) and after the company financially stumbled, I moved to Looking Glass to work on Destruction Derby N64. I had to bail from Looking Glass as it began circling the drain and was lucky to join the startup Amaze Entertainment three years ago, where i’ve worked on three games (harry potter PC, wild wild west, baseball).

I’m very interested in opportunities in the Game Industry in Ireland and would love to see it develop.

      Congratulations on a great website.

      Hi All,

Alan Duggan is my name. I’m somewhat new to the games industry but a bit of an old hand in Software and more specifically the Mobile side of things.

I have spent most of my professional career as a software developer of one kind or another. I have done all the management bits as well, people, projects, clients, politics, the coffee machine! :-) I specialised in Mobile about 4 years back working in Mobile Enterprise Data developing a couple of mobile middleware products. About 18 months ago, I got interested in mobile games. I spent quite a bit of time trying to gather market data and feeling the water. I finally took the plunge late last year and have been getting my ducks in a row since then.

I’m MD of a company I set up 2.5 years ago and I am a client of EI so I will try to help when it comes to sharing experience for whatever it’s worth.

I am delighted to see an outlet for the Irish Games development community appear and congrats to Aphra and everyone involved.

Hopefully together we can achieve a critical mass of games companies in Ireland.

      Regards,
      Alan

Clevercelt AKA Michael J. Maguire anseo, glad to see so many new heads poppin’ up about the place. Where’s that score you owe me MAL

      story so far…………..
I had a commodore 64 in 1982, wrote text based games, plays stories and udder stuff, made some short films. Basically a Scriptwriter, actor and director, truly great conceptuals, really dodgey funding. Founded T.H.E. LTD 1989( multi- media & theatre – corporate entertainment & programs that crashed alot) it went bust. Recorded some of beckett’s radio stuff professionally. Founded TAINTECH 1996 (IES/Games) drank some with MAL & Steve, made it to the wire but it went bust too. Did the 1st feasibilty study for Enterprise Ireland into IES, admired some busts :D. As Ireland’s 1st indigenous offically licensed playstation developer, Got to eat sushi round the Launch of the PS2 in Tokyo. Got very drunk at several CGDCs and ECTS with the fledging Irish Gaming community (the lads from Havok & Cando & Taintech & Niall O Sony Basically) Suffered Death and was buried. Joined Microsoft for my previous life. Xbox launch later I looked after all EMEA versions of FS2002, CFS3, RSC and Tao Feng for Xbox, other techybiz management stuff. Continue in that Day job. Clevercelt is my latest and greatess adventure…..more on that later.

Aphra really is to be commended on dragging us all together and making us speak up. That digital hub yolk is still about and I’m apparently on some focusless games focus group there with Gary Mc of MediaLab, Peter of airplay, one of the lads from Cartoon saloon, mr martello and others of equal renoun. Cash is tight for the industry at present but it’s still a great time to be involved in what’s still a wild west industry to some. I’ve 3 great kids that beat me at Halo, a wife that should be awarded one and I still possess a general optimism about actually establishing a recognisable and potentially successful industry here.

I remember taking to Andy of red lemon in long beach about setting up the SGA. And like them; ultimately we need companies, of whatever dimension to form an industry and I respect anyone brave enough to take that plunge having only genuine admiration for anyone who makes it through that monetary minefield to the other side. Havok’s Steve, Hugh & Alan are IMHO proud examples of what can be achieved if you can correctly, intelligently harness and apply collective determination, talent perseverance & that ole vision Thang.

It also helps if you can down 3 pints quicker than the cash register can add them up :-)

write soon, wrong most of the time.

      MJM

      Hi folks,

I suspect I’ll be lurking more than anything else, since I’m not actually a developer (at the moment), but it seems only polite to introduce myself.

My name is Rob Fahey, and by day, I’m editor of the gaming trade news website, GamesIndustry.biz – thanks to the joys of working in an industry that isn’t much up for respecting 9-5 working hours, I’m also much the same thing by night. No alter-ego for me.

I’m also a contributing editor on our company’s other site, Eurogamer.net, and I co-run the Eurogamer Shop.

In past lives I’ve worked on CTW, which was the industry’s longest running weekly trade newspaper, and like most people I did my stint at a dot.com – UbiSoft’s ill-fated GameLoft – and prior to that I was a software developer in Dublin, albeit not a game software developer.

My game development background is in working as a designer and sometime programmer on a couple of old shareware bits and bobs, and bringing a game to pitch stage a few years back before realising that I needed to get a real job or I’d starve to death, sadly. I keep fairly well updated with game development issues though, not least thanks to my housemate who is a PS2 and Xbox programmer and has bent my ear so often about technical game coding issues that I actually know how to write shadow volume code on the PS2. Sort of. I also do some work for developers in the UK in terms of assessing their products either pre-pitch or pre-launch so they can get some idea of how the media is going to respond to it.

A few people here know me from Boards.ie, and Kiigan (hi Ian!) knows me because I insult him occasionally on mailing lists. :) I’m sure I’ve run into quite a few of you at various trade shows as well.

Assuming us hated meeja scum aren’t too unwelcome, I’d love to come along to one of these pub meets of which you speak. Obviously as an Irishman living abroad there’s nothing I’d like more than to see the Irish games industry take root properly; maybe then I can return to living in a country that can provide a decent pint (or perhaps even three decent pints before they’re rung up on the till, eh?)…

Best of luck with the site and with all of your various enterprises.

      Rob.

Hi there folks. Seems only right and proper to introduce myself on this here fine forum. Congrats to everyone involved for getting the site up and running.

My name is David Stafford, and I’m the creative director at Kapooki games in Dublin. Grifmike explained what we’re up to in his intro, so I won’t repeat all that again.

Its great to see the enthusiasm on the site, I’m hoping it will serve as a focus for what is the embryonic Irish games industry. There is no reason Ireland cannot produce a number of world class developers, provided the creativity and love of the industry is matched by sound business acumen. Credibility really is the keyword for Irish developers. Proving to investors and publishers that you can do what you can say you can. Its not enough to believe you can do it, as much as possible you have to prove you can do it too. Its a tough order, but a site like this one can only help everyone share the knowledge and experience.

      Glad to meet yez all!

      How’s it going there everyone!

Jaysus, there seems to be more interest than I thought here, cheers Aphra as it’ll make things a lot easier.

Anyway, my name is Jamie McCormick, currently studying Marketing & Management in DIT. I’m 20, been an avid gamer for most of my life. I was also editor of IrishPlayer.com until the end of February when it closed down, have been writing games related articles for newspapers and magazines around the country, as well as writing feature articles for GameDevelopers.ie that will hopefully give you some insight into the industry.

I’m not a game developer, but hope to go on placement within the industry and specilise in interactive entertainment marketing side of things which may be helpful on the business side of things.

      Talk to ya!

      Hi all,
Great site, long may it thrive. I’m Pete, 25 and just got into the industry last year. I studied in London and Dublin (Media Special Effects and Computer Animation and 3D Modelling respectively) and I now work in Donegal creating low and high poly content for next gen real time games. A sustained games industry in Ireland is long overdue, did you know that one year Codemasters didn’t have to recruit in the UK at all, because most of their staff came from BCFE in Dublin? Its mad to think of so much talent being exported, makes you wonder what we could pull off if we all worked together….glub…I promised myself I wouldn’t cry…

I’ll be keeping a keen eye on this site, and post whenever I think I can help out.

      Pete.

We have distribution in Europe, Australia, North America and Japan through contracts with aggregators and operators. Our first titles will be available through these channels towards the end of May.

Upstart is also running the N-GAGE Challenge, with sponsorship from Nokia and O2. This is a game concept competition. There is a story about it here today (thanks Aphra!)

      Peter Mee, M.D, Meedja Ltd.

Have had dual career in Games & E-Learning. Guess which I prefer!

Worked as a programmer in long lost PixelMagic for a while before moving to Capture Productions where I worked as developer/project manager on a raft of localisations for Fisher Price games and the like.

Moved on to work as freelancer with a number of web agencies developing web marketing games etc.

Set up Meedja Ltd. on campus at DKIT to work on developing masively multiplayer, platform agnostic game technology and content. Getting there slowly and continuing contract work on projects as diverse as e-learning content management systems to bespoke game development for a range of international clients.

Currently working on a range of platforms and using a range of dev. environments but will always love Macromedia Director!

Meedja is up to 3 employees now and growing! If you’re ever in Dundalk, drop by for a chat! (that means you Mal).

I’ll chip in here with a bit of background on myself. My name is Colin McGinley.

After surviving college I decided that working for a game development studio might be a bit of a larf, so I applied to everyone that was advertising in the back pages of Edge.

I ended up relocating to the Isle of Wight, and worked for Stainless Software on their first title: Carmageddon. Divided my time between running the office and doing programming work.

Moved onto Sensible Software and programmed stuff for Sensible Soccer ’98, and Sensible Soccer European Club Edition. Sensible didn’t survive the cancellation of their massive adventure game, Sex’n’Drugs’n’Rock’n’Roll, and so I moved onto Red Lemon Studios. Worked on Take the Bullet, a Dreamcast FPS that never saw the light of day.

My final game stint was working for Criterion, before I returned to Dublin and got myself a ‘normal’ development job.

I am in the process of trying to get a mobile games company, Kerbyware, off the ground. Development has been done part-time to date, but we still have two games released already, and three more in the works.

In my time working in the games industry I met a lot of great people and had some absolutely fantastic times. I’ve also met my fair share of eejits, and experienced how rough the games industry can be. The industry as a whole is still incredibly immature, especially when it comes to it development practices. The counter arguement is that you can’t expect game development to follow traditional software development practices, as you’ll lose the creativity. I don’t know what software development practices these people are thinking off, but solid iterative based development, with proper analysis, design, coding and test phases is sorely needed if development studios want to stop going over budget and bust.

Also, if you ever really wonder if the rumours and gossip found on sites such as Fatbabies can really be true, then let me assure you that it is. Even though the games industry is worldwise, it isn’t all that big and bitchiness and backstabbing is rife. Be warned. Let’s just hope that the Irish games industry does us proud and rises about the problems and hurdles that we face, to become a truely global power in the provider of digital entertainment.

Hi all, my name is Neil Leyden and I am MD of Journeyman Productions, a media production company based up in The Digital Hub.

Although our main experience is in film, television and web production, we intend to be a convergent media company. That is why we are very interested in talking to anyone in the games sector – PC, console, mobile etc.

At present, one of our major projects is a 3-D childrens animated feature that we are scripting for a US producer. Obviously, we would love to hear from 3-D animators as we would like to keep as much of the storyboard work as we can in Ireland.

Also, we would like to get into the area of creating and producing games and would welcome any thoughts on that (parterships, joint ventures etc.) as we have a lot of experience rasing money for film and television projects.

Anyway, drop me a line at neil@journeymanproductions.com

      Hi y’all.
My name is Stephen Kenny, 19, and at the moment I am the manager of Irelands First LAN gaming centre here in Arklow, but I hope to get into the 3D modelling industry or game design.
No degrees or anything as I failed my math, due to lack of concentration after my uncle died the morning of paper 1. And so no college would have me, I still haven’t got back into maths. I have lots of those “Noddy learns computers” type certs, I won the Intel Excellence award for the young scientist expo in 2002.
Really need a hand getting into the industry, any advice welcome!

      Hello,

A bit late, but I’m a 20 year old student at DCU. I’m studying Computer Applications Software Engineering, about to enter into my third year. I’ve decided to seriously focus on fields related to game development with an eye on a future career. At the moment I’m studying computer graphics in my own time, with the hope of having a small demo ready in the next few months to use to try secure 6 months work placement at a games company as part of my degree next year. By the end of my degree I hope to be knowledgeable in a number of areas including graphics, physics and AI, with portfolio reflecting that. In my spare time, I’m currently honing my CV for internship applications, and quietly praying to god(s) that there’ll be enough of an industry here by the time I graduate that I won’t to emigrate ;)

      Hello everyone,

I’m new to the forum but am very impressed with the format and level of support. I’d love to meet up with you all one day and bitch about the state of things over a pint.

      Me: Paul McLaughlin

      What I do:(in reverse order)

CG artist at Emerald software in Waterford.

Studied Fine Art at WIT (Waterford RTC)

Before that I was an engineering draftsman designing machines for wire bending (now you know why I decided to study art :-)

I’ve worked on quite a few games, some good some less so:
Black and White, Populous3, Theme Park, Syndicate, Hi Octane, Magic Carpet, Populous2, Powermonger WW1, Treasure Trap, Running Man, Phantom Fighter,

There were others that were either canned or that I had a managerial role in; Creature Isle, Creation, Syndicate 2, Theme Hospital, Gene Wars, Magic Carpet 2, Bruce Lee ‘enter the Dragon’ A-10 Tank killer.

      Hello everyone,

I just became aware of this site a week ago and so far I think it is very impressive. Everyone in the forums seems to be in full support of each other and willing to help each other out.

Currently I am eighteen years of age and I am attending college in Belfast. Most of my time is spent studying but in my spare time I volunteer for the International Game Developers Association, David Perry and Lionhead Studios.

With the IGDA I moderate all of their forums and ensure that everything runs smoothly. I also put forth any suggestions that I have to help the IGDA continue to grow.

I also moderate the producers forum in the David Perry Talent Pool. Dave Perry personally appointed me to this position and I am very proud to be helping him.

I then moderate the game design and development forum of the Lionhead Studios Discussion Boards. Here I share my advice and experience with others.

I aspire to eventually become a game producer or even a game designer. I plan to start out in game testing which will hopefully give me a chance to further prove my dedication to the industry.

Can’t wait to start discussing Irish game development with all of you.

      Greetings Folks,

I’m an irish composer now living in the states (life in florida is hell…hell I tell you….) but have a keen interest in the Irish gaming community (since do I intend to return in the near future). I’ve dedicated my work to game audio as I’ve been a game music nut since the days of the C64, and am a member of the Game Audio Network Guild (which really means I can use their nice spangly logo on my site :) ).
There are many samples up at my site if you want a listen, http://www.whisperbetweenworlds.com from Techno to Soft Orchestral.

It’s great to have found this organisation and am glad to be involved.

      Cheers,

      Derek

My name is Frank McNamee and I am Director of a multimedia/e-learning company based in Waterford (http://www.multimedia-instruction.com). A few months back we decided to apply the multimedia skills within our team to the game industry. We have a strategy in place for the development of an initial game and we are making good progress. I think the informal social gathering is a good idea and I am hoping to make it to the next one.

Over the summer I made my first 3D game. (here’s a screeny)

      Hey All,

      I’m a 24 year old Game-Programmer,
Used to be a hobby gamedev enthusiast, programming in C++ and DirectX before I got disillusioned with my previous job(writing accountancy apps) and decided to open up a Games-Studio with 2 developers I met while in college!

We are still small and we are building up things slowly.

We intend to keep things simple at the start, just getting some games under our belt before we start moving on to bigger things.

At the moment there our 5 people involved in development with Druidev.

We are focusing on wireless games for the moment, Symbian & J2ME and intend to move on to other platforms as soon as we have a track record to show we can be taken seriously!

Hi folks, about time I introduced myself.

My name is Michael Kiely. I’m a computer scientist by trade and I teach in Tipperary Institute (i.e. In Thurles and Clonmel).

I lecture in Language Design and Implmentation to Software Developement students and in Radio and Video Production to Multimedia students.

Audio is my particular area of interest and music (as the song goes) is my first love. Game audio has always been an interest of mine, from SID to CD.

I love nothing better than sampling, recording and mashing samples and audio in my spare time. And I play trumpet (badly).

I’m a little odd in that I understand both media people AND programmers and, as if you haven’t guessed, I am a certified jack-of-all-trades*.

I’m delighted to see this forum and site being set up. Hopefully some real good will come of it. And hopefully I can contribute something meaningful.

      *But master of some!

Ah sure why not :) It’s about time…

I’ve been playing games for god knows how many years, and in the last 5-6 I have also taken a hand in various organisational matters – last year I directed “Leprecon”, Trinity’s annual games convention at over 400 people, was on the committee for “Gaelcon” at around 700 people, and almost doubled the average event size for my business CCGIreland, which organises and runs events for collectible card game players around Ireland. I am also involved in the running of regular all night computer game sessions around Dublin.

      Hellooooooo…

My name’s Joe Clarke, I’m a senior IT developer in Bank of Ireland with 12 years experience. I use VB, C++ & SQL. I started out as an actuarial programmer in Hibernian after graduating with a maths degree from TCD. I started games programming 3 months ago in my spare time…my first game will be a 2D game similar to the arcade games of the late 80s. I never thought all that maths physics crap I did in college would come in useful…!

I’m bored working in financial services and would like a change.

      Hello Everyone,
I’ve only been a forum voyeur so far, and since multitudes of unknowns have come forth, I thought well I might as well.

I’m Carley McGlynn and no..I’m not a developer as yet. I’m another one of those fortunates(?) to be spat out last summer from BCFE. I create 3d, 2d or anything that’s fantastic and submersive. In saying that I’ve drudged through the ranks of web design from time to time but everyone has to make sacrifices I guess. So… I’m a 3d animator & modeler…really! I’m also into art direction, I guess it’s kind of a package deal.
Thanks Pete for recommending this site!

For more (and somewhat more professional) info I’m listed in the skills directory.
      Bye x

Before that, I was in Havok – so if I ever work in Torc, I’ll have made the Hat Trick :) I studied CS at Trinity, and I’m doing a research masters in Augmented Reality at the moment (the games potential in the AR field is just amazing… check out AR Quake).

To my shame I have never been to a shindig, but I should be at the next one (unless I contract the pox). :)

Hi my name is Chris McEvoy, Im 24 years old and have a HND in computer animation. I live in Dublin.
I was lead animator on ‘the milliner’ a 3d short by Kavaleer productions and have also work as a graphic designer and flash animator for Riverdeep interactive learning. ‘The Milliner’ has been short listed for 2 O2 awards this year.

Ive been playing games since jetpack on the ZX spectrum and owned all major consoles up until XBOX. Im the best in the world at all Street fighters! Really.;)
I feel the art of game making in todays market is being replaced by uninspiring titles and we need more fresh ideas. I love Japan and think Anime rocks, not the crap thats shown on tv but real 80s stuff like Gaiking and Getta Robo and more conventional stuff like Kenshin and Neon Genesis. Well thats me.

Hi to all, im Keith Killilea from Galway and have been creating wacky games since the c-64 days. Iv been hanging around the games industry for a few years and worked along side some brill people on demos at Wonder Show Studios , Mystic Game Development and it was great to meet Taintech, Funcom, Kapooki, Applepie, & Disorder Digital Media in Ireland.

I founded a media company last year to develop a GBA demo and a 3D online walkthrough of Galway city. I left the company to give it another go at game development with a new online game project that is dame ambitous in its goals over the next few years to create a world-wide virtual space community of linked cities that works like in ways of the GTA game with a mix of Everquest. Hopefully by April there should be a playable online demo released for download and maybe if lucky a trip to E3 :)

If anyone is interested in helping out, drop me a line.

Its great to see the irish gaming community coming togethere & may it long live as a top player in the gaming world

      Hi everyone,

My name is David McGovern and I am currently doing the LUDO course at Ballyfermot.
I am 23 years old and have worked in software engineering for the past 4 years until going back to college. I also worked for Codemasters in Warwickshire, England as a games tester for 6 months a couple of years ago.
I have mucked about with 3DS Max and other similar apps for the past few years and hope to get a job as a 3D artist with a games developer after I have finished college. I am currently working on my online portfolio, and am currently sifting through all my artwork picking out pieces which I think are my best to date. You can check out the site here:
      http://noopti.topcities.com/
Its not much at the moment, in fact its pretty empty, but I hope to have a lot more up there in the next few weeks. ;)

      Hi all,

Just wanted to drop a line and introduce myself. My name is Scott Macmillan, and I’m an American working for Stainless Steel Studios, a PC developer in Boston. Our two games are the RTS’s Empire Earth and Empires: Dawn of the Modern World.

I’m the QA Lead here, and have done a bunch of project management work as well. I’ve been in the games industry for about a year and a half now.

I was looking around the web and found this site, and I’m really interested in how things go for the Irish game community. Since I’m keeping up on the posts, I figured I’d drop a line to say hi.

Please feel free to use me as a sounding board if you want to get a Yank’s opinion on things. ;)

Seems like the place to be seen!
I’m fresh (almost) out of Trinity’s I.C.T. Ba, looking to start working in the games industry. A familiar story to 90% of those posting here…
Im currently putting together an entry for Dare to be Digital – they only let you enter one idea, unfortunately :)
Still its an inspired concept, and not just for the prizes. Getting all these unfocused, under-employed and atrophying graduates to band together and create commercial-production-capable entities is simply genius. My mates and I (and Im sure many others) were doing it anyway, but this makes it so much easier and more rewarding.
And it’s a big step in furthering our Irish games industry. There’s power in the proletariat.
Enough waffle. Take the power back! (And maybe when we do, Kapooki will finally give me a job, sans experience)…

      Ben Cowley.

p.s. Nice articles in A.I. Game Programming Wisdom, Stainless Steel Studios. Good studio there, Scott.

      Hi folks,

I’m _pleasantly_ surprised to find a significant games dev community and industry in Ireland. Havok! wow. I’m a 30+ male living and working in Limerick city. My job is sadly not games related unless you count my efforts to break the M$TSQL parser.
After several years in IT, I’m back to college again, this time to get an IT degree thingy via the DCU Oscail programme (which has many good points and many bad points).
I was weaned many years ago on the venerable C64 and Apple][ and enjoyed writing lots of little games for them. I’ve been a PC person since then (apart from a brief daliance with the old Psions). My current projects are an object-orientated-world text adventure engine in C++ and an ultra realistic space sim engine in OpenGL/C++. I may even find the time to finish one of them.

I’ve also been heavily involved in various pen-n-paper RPG societies in Ireland over the years particulary in Tralee (The Society for the Frequenters of the Hobbit’s Armpit) and Limerick University (GSOC). I believe that traditional storytelling & RPG & computer games have a lot to learn from each other. I’d love to work in the industry or start my own studio and seeing whats happening is certainly encouragement to gear up for that!

      Kudos
      John Mc Namara

      Hey,
I think I might of introduced myself here before about a year ago.
Well anyhow alot has happened since so hey I’ll reintroduce myself.
I am Kevin Boland aged 24. DCU Computer Applications graduate from 2002. After DCU spent a great year in Dundee doing a postgrad and DARE.
I was the tech lead for the Demonlore team that won the “Inovation” award. Straight after Dare I got offered 2 jobs one at Codemasters and the other at EA. Took the EA job where I am now a programmer on Harry Potter games, more specifally I worked on the Eyetoy minigames for the PS2 (which is really cool)

      Thats about it.

Great to an official Irish team at Dare.
Last year 8 of the 30 ppl in Dare where Irish.
and this year I know a few Irish ppl on the others teams also.

      HI All

My name is Paul and I’m new to game developers, So I thought I’d jump on the band wagon and join the Introductions tread.

I am a 3d modeller and animator among other other things and am now currently looking for work in the games industry in Ireland, which we all know is a more than difficult task considering the minimal amount of games companies here.

It was suggested to me by some friends to check out this site and forum to see what kind of community and resources are out there, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by the amount of you guys that are regularly posting on the forum. Its good to know that I’m not alone in my interests in game development and also my wish to work in the industry.

I’ve studied computer animation in ballyfermot for three years and am an extreme games fan (not unlike everybody else here I expect). I love games and would really enjoy if my station in life was in someway involved in the creation of them.

I was recently at the Torc open day in the digital hub and was extremely surprised by the work that those guys are doing up in Donegal. I was so surprised that It completely rekindled my thirst to work as a games animator and got me on the ball to join this forum.

Thats about it I suppose, I’ll probably be a regular on the site now, I promise that all my posts in the future wont be as long as this one just in case any of you were worried about that.

      Hi all,
      My name’s Kevin Martin.
I’m from N.Ireland and I’ve been working in games for the last 6 years.
In June 1998 I went to work for Taintech in Dundalk and was the Lead Artist there.
I’ve been working for Climax in Portsmouth since 2000.
My fifth game for them should be out summer 2005.
It’s good to see some familiar names popping up here. Also good to see the industry in Ireland still has a pulse.

Opps did’nt notice this thread before for some reason…..I’ve been here awhile but I’ll introduce myself anyway.

My name is Gareth Barry and I am 22 years old. I’ll start a bit back, just so you’ve a vague idea of where I’m coming from. I finished high school in 99′ and proceeded to work for a few weeks before I moved to Amsterdam with my mate, spent 3 months in Amsterdam before my passport was taken from me, moved back to Ireland and attended Colaiste Staiofun Naiofe in 2001 where I studied Graphic Design, whilst studying this I did promo work for some companies in Cork and work for D/AOL(not America Online) for 2 months.

after this I moved to America for another 3 months where I worked as a labourer, for the summer. Looked up a few local Game Developers and generally enjoyed myself. Moved back to Ireland August 2003 and attended Ludo in BCFE… there I began to realise why the Gaming community in Ireland is so special, we had a really tight group and worked together(Nooptical was there at the time (-: )

My general line of experience is PhotoShop/InDesign/Dreamweaver/Illustrator/3DS Max/Java/M-Dos and Soundforge, this year will see a return to BCFE for me in the form of the Higher National Diploma in Games Design and theory, I hope to meet all of you at the next ShinDig in Dublin, and brush a few Ideas together…..you never know, talent and success is spun by determined minds.

      best of luck.

      hey all

My name is Nicholas Nash, and am a (going into) 3rd year Computer Science student at Trinity. I’ve been programming since I was about 14. I’m very interested in computer graphics (realtime and non-realtime) and have written various 3d engines in Java, C++ (in DOS), and these days I code mostly realtime hardware accel stuff on Win32. My main interest in computer graphics these days isn’t in games programming but in demo-coding (i just posted a thread about the demoscene)…

      Hi guys.

I’ve been browsing the site for a while with very few posts, so its time i changed that.

My name is Eoin Carroll, I graduted from CS in GCD last year and spent a year working in a small IT consultancy as a Programmer/ Analyst. I have since left that job and I am now lecturering part time in GCD. which I hope will give my enough time to learn C++ (It was a Java based course) and decide how I should try and enter the industry.

The whole real-time/game programming stuff is a bit new, bit i’ll give a good run at it to get up to speed.

      Hi all,

Micheal Colhoun here. I’ve been involved in techie stuff all my life and moved from multimedia to gaming technology several years ago. Was involved with the setup of http://galway.net in the early days..back in 1994 would you believe!..and I’m proud to say it’s still running strong…although for me it’s now a venture of the past.

Glad to introduce my self to you all, and look forward to meeting many of you in the near future.

At the moment, my team and I are working on a Virtual Reality Teleworking Communities software platform called ViRTeCo, not to be confused with U2’s recent single :D

It’s early stage startup, with a long way to go, and I’m a very open to people’s ideas and beliefs about the way things will go in the future….

Have fun, and hopefullly meet you soon maybe at the next shindig in Galway.

Oh, we will have a web site soon.
      http://www.virteco.net but don’t go there yet…. (yes I know :p )

      hey all

I’m from County Clare, currently living in Hull, East Yorkshire. Have a BEng in Computer Engineering from UL and am a completed dissertation away from an MSc in Games Programming from the University of Hull.

I’m a C++ fetishist with a love of object orientation and software engineering despite a hardware background. Current projects include: MSc Dissertation (fancy Steering Behaviour implementation in C++); loads of fun with GLSL and HLSL shaders; and an Asteroids reversion using a modern physics engine.

Ended up surfing in here because my mother nags me about getting a job in Ireland every time she calls ;), and because the site showed up on a google search while I was looking for background info for a Dare to be Digital entry (preparing for the interviews in the Yorkshire area in a fortnight’s time).

Great to see that there’s some game development going on in Ireland, could be handy if/when I decide to return.

My name is Anthony Mc Fadden (another ICE member) and the victim of much of r_mc_gowan’s bullying :P

I don’t know what my real strength is just yet, it should emerge soon but I think I am a creative guy (ideas, concepts etc most of which Richard shot down :? don’t worry this wont be a Richard bashing post) but hoping that I can develop a strength in another area (hopefully programming, mmm lovely code :P ).

      Hi,
My name is Peter Mc Quilkin. I am 18 years old. I am currently a student on the HNC ICE course here in Derry.

I love the fact that i am creating computer games here on the course (although i love playing them even more) and i do hope i stay on and hopefully get into the incubator project next year to continue making games.

At this moment in time i have taken a liking for 3d modelling of characters and levels. I love working with Photoshop and 3d studio max.

Hi my name is conor and i’m a 21 year old 3/4th year Busines Info systems student in CIT. I have always wanted to get into the games industry and i wish i had seen this place before i filled out my CAO.

I have had what might be called an unhealthy obsession with games and have been designing levels since Dark Forces II:Jedi knight. thought admittedly they weren’t great and i haven’t done anything in the past 3 years, stupid college work.

Right now i am just looking at what i can do next and this place has given me alot to think about. Looks like another 4 years of college for me i think but its all for a worthy cause

      Hi all,

About time I introduced myself officially I guess. My name is Niamh Breslin and I’m now the PR & Marketing Manager for StarCave Studios in Galway. I completed a degree in Computational Linguistics in DCU in 2002 and have also just completed my masters in Marketing & Management from NUI Galway this year. In the middle 2 years between educations I spent time working (and playing!) in Africa, Asia and India. Most of that was with the software localisation company Lionbridge Technologies.

I’m really enjoying learning about the games industry and have found this site an invaluable resource so far. I’m not a massive gamer or anything like that  but I do have the odd moment! My real vices would be boarding and golf, kinda the out-doorsy type – but I’m open to conversion :)

Hope to get to meet some of you at some shindig sometime in the future (or you could all come West instead!)

Well seeing as everyone seems to be doing it!

I’m Anthony, graduated from CA last year, currently working in a non-games related job to pay for some travelling and an MSc in AI for next year.

The majority of my experience is j2me and j2se (i know, that’s not real game coding! ), but working on Win32 and Directx…i’m more into games with cool AI than anything else (or atleast that’s my excuse for my dodgy “graphics”)

I got a sniff of the wonderful games industry when i got down to the last two for an internship with upstartgames during my finals…didn’t get it, but
      i’ll be back!

I should really spend more time on these boards…

      Hello everyone,

My name’s Eoghan Quigley – i’m graduate of the LUDO course from way back in ’98. After LUDO, i got a job in England in BlitzGames, where i was working for the past 6 years as lead animator. I’ve just returned to Ireland to join the team in StarCave over here in the Galway, & i’ve got to say, i’m glad to be back! :D

It’s also very good to return to a much bigger & more developed industry here than when i left. Kudos to those who’ve been putting in all the work!

You can check out the BlitzGames website to see some of the stuff i’ve worked on in the past.
      http://www.blitzgames.com/

At StarCave, i’ll be helping finish off the projects currently in production, & starting work on the upcoming 14Tribes. Check out the GD.ie news articles on StarCave to see what’s happening out here:
      http://www.gamedevelopers.ie/news/viewnews.php?article=220/

Maybe I should post a bit about me, I think.

So hello, I am Philippe Jofresa, pleased to meet you :)
Let’s see, I am an artist trapped in a programmer’s body. I think that sums it up quite nicely.

if you just want my interests, skip to the bottom :-P

I was born in France, a mere month after Karol Wojtyla became John Paul II. When I was 9 years old, my father who was then still a student working on his doctorate decided to bring home this… thing. It was called a Victor PC II, and on it were two programs that fascinated me almost immediately: one was called PaintBrush and the other Flight Simulator II. All I can remember is that it was all in green and black, and I fucking loved it.
And so it was that my love for drawing and computers started, never to be crushed, so far.
Over the years, and to keep it short, I discovered board games, roleplaying games, miniature painting, the Fine Arts, all the while continuing my education on the Scientist trail, and generally becoming a good programmer, although a chaotic one, I am sure my teachers would say.

In 1998, after two years of Telecom and Networks, I am working at an ISP in my part of France, testing ADSL (still experimental technology at the time) and Satellite transmission…downloading all the porn I can get my hands on, for the sake of testing the bandwidth , programming for my employer using a brand new technology called Server Side Scripting (oooh…) and generally wondering why on Earth I ever listened to my parents, and didn’t do the Fine Arts as I could have
Then they tell me I am young to start working, so maybe I should go study abroad for a while.

And so I end up here, in Letterkenny. Just when I thought I couldn’t live in a more God forsaken place than my little town in the Alps, God decides to show me how wrong I was…
During the last 7 years, I have mostly enjoyed my time here, generally being a waster as I have always been, wondering where all the good food went, and my mountains, wondering why oh why it never snows, yet it’s so freaking cold. Oh, and drinking.
Now I go home and my friends who had never seen me drink or dance look at me with wild eyes as I quietly sip my huge pint.
They all think I am an alcoholic

Ah well, I don’t care, I have learned to love this place. It has given me a social life, great friends, and I have discovered just how much I love teaching.
-I still program : in fact, ATM I am back doing the same kind of shite I was doing 8 years ago… PHP and CSS and Javascript on Apache.
-I still draw and paint : miniatures using my triple-0, various sketches with my trusty pencils, and posters and other stuff on Photoshop using my wonderful graphic tablet (which I had been dreaming about since I was 12). Funnily, I haven’t done much 3D since they released Max (used to do POVRay, 3DS and Bryce), nor have I used much of Painter since I have my tablet (go figure).
-I still play way too many games:
I doubt most of the roleplaying games I have would mean anything to you, but my latests purchases include the new World of Darkness, the Transhuman Space setting, the complete Warcraft RPG.
Latest board games include the excellent Citadels, the hilarious Munchkin and the fabulous Pirates of the Spanish Main.
Card games, again, so many of them… let’s put it this way, I play since The Dark.

Well, I love gaming, and computer gaming, for me, is only the insipid, uninspired and overindustrialised top of the iceberg. I think that sums hope my love of gaming quite nicely.

So anyway, that’s me. Mostly .

Oh, one more thing, I tend to write lots. I mean, really.
If you ever visit GameDev.Net I am “ahw”, there.

      Philippe

I can’t believe it I have been a member here for nearly two years and I haven’t even introduced myself, How Rude!
Anyways, some of you guys know me already, but here it is for those who don’t.

My name is Rich Allen and I am a graphics/tools programmer. A graduate of BSc Computer Science at UU in Coleraine. I specialized in graphics for my final year project and created a Normal Mapper for lo/hires ase models, at the mo I am working on improving said mapper and also doing some work on creating tools for shaders, scripting and bits n’ pieces.

My interests are games, linux…mmm…penguins, ahem, drinking copious amounts of the ole java bean, flash dabbling, writing mutliplayer games, and as I am a total geek, I absolutely love my old palm III with the obligatory copy of neuromancer and of course conspiracy theories, moon landing my arse :D

I will be going to the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Arizona come this spring. My major will be Game Programming. I kinda tripped upon this site while looking for gaming jobs abroad. My wife and I took our honeymoon in Ireland, and did the trip around the country kind of thing. We fell in love with the place and the people, mostly because the general population is much cooler and more intelligent than the stupid Americans I am used to. Anyway glad to be on board and it looks like a good place you guys have here. Hopefully I will have something to add.

Ive been hanging around this forum for over 6 months never posting just giggling incessantly in work!!! Hullo to one n all
My name is Daniel Potter, I live in letterkenny Co Donegal and I am just starting a research msc in Artificial agents and game design at L.Y.I.T (so I will probobly be wrecking your heads for the next 2 years over these boards). And I have completed a Bsc in applied computing at the above institute. And I am at the moment sitting in a freezing cold room where the rain is leaking thru the window.
I really enjoy games and game programming/developement and looking forward to creating something quite insane and unique (or just daft) with the msc opportunity I have. I have made 2 games to date and they where for projects through the college 3rd and final years (pac-man clone and a networking battleships game) and would like to get some experience in a team enviroment developing games.
I love all things nintendo (god bless innovation, keeps sony with ideas to copy) and hate all things sony (how did they think of that??, thats right they copied it). And am currently obsessed with warhammer dawn of war and half life 2 games for the PC (orks, orks, orks, orks).

OK, I didn’t finish the MSc, because it’s bloody difficult to do that when nobody seems to give a shit, but in this case, I think maybe things have changed a bit, and anyway, I’ll be around so feel free to ask.

Well, that’s nice, I hope you enjoy the course, I dunno about the first years, but here in MSc, I’m really delighted with the way things are going :)

Oh, and since you are looking for “guidance and influence”, here is my first bit of advice:
yes we have really nice machines, and it would be a shame not to use them to their full potential, but use headphones. Just because I happen to like some of the music I hear coming out of the speakers, doesn’t mean other people want to listen to it. For that matter, I don’t really want to hear other people playing Counterstrike while I am trying to finish my assignments (I’d rather be joining the game to teach you a lesson, in fact).
So get headphones, or turn off the sound. It’s basic good manners.

And you can spread the word to your fellow students. I know I sound harsh, but honestly, I have spent the last 7 years hearing morons playing bad music loud while 20 people were trying to actually get some work done, all staring at each other wondering what to say. So if you guys can learn how to behave from the get go, I’m willing to pass for an asshole for it :P

      Cheers

And you can spread the word to your fellow students. I know I sound harsh, but honestly, I have spent the last 7 years hearing morons playing bad music loud while 20 people were trying to actually get some work done, all staring at each other wondering what to say. So if you guys can learn how to behave from the get go, I’m willing to pass for an asshole for it :P

      Cheers[/quote:350ac903d2]

The room can get a bit out of hand but I never have and never will listen to music on those computers. For some reason listening to music through a computer has never interested me, and for CS I always use the same machine which for some reason doesnt play sound anyway, but the rest of the guys are all wearing headphones now so you’ll be able to work in peace.

And those machines are pretty shite anyway. The drivers are out of date and the machine itself isnt running as fast as it could be.

      Hi,

About time i got around to introducing myself i think. My name is PJ O Halloran and i hail from Cork. Ive just finished a degree in computer systems in UL this year and currently i am working at a research masters for UCC in a totally non gaming related area (Combinatorial Auctions and Risk Management) although It will help develop my software development skills.

I am planning to go to Abertay Dundee or Hull next year to do a masters in computer games technology. Hope to get employment as a computer games programmer in the next 2-3 years in the UK or Ireland.

Favourite games are Football Manager, Metal Gear Solid 1 & 3, and all of the Broken Sword series.

Talk to ye on the boards when i get a chance!

Program in VB, C++, Java been programming for last 3/4years. Only big thing i’ve done soo far is created a health and safety game that didn’t even get published, ah so much time wasted on that project. oh yea also learning Discreets 3ds max 7.0. I prefer the old arcade classic games, hence why i’m not too into graphics any more. “I prefer gameplay to graphics” hmm off on my next wee project.

*rants on some more* Not to bore you folks too much here so i’ll keep it short heh. Decided to become an Indie Developer after a brief encounter of what it’s like to work with… well lets just say not too reliable people.

yeah your right. i live only a mile or two from the border and its beside fermanagh. i went to secondary school. in fermanagh and now i am nearly done my A- levels which i am doing in Enniskillen. yeah a good few people cross the border the biggest problem for me is that i have to get up at half six in the morning and get the bus at ten past seven. i am not really a morning person especially when it’s pitch dark and knowing that nearly everybody else is still asleep.

I’m trying to get into Games development, but i’m a bit lost as to where to go, and what to do.

      (It all starts here……hopefully)

I got here from gamesindustry.biz and because the edge forums are closed for unexplained reasons.

What I did notice one day when watching a documentary on computer games about two months ago, was that every second one of the people interviewed had the remains of an irish accent and an irish second name.I wonder what the percentae of irish people working in england in the games industry actually is? any ideas?[/quote:3ba4bb0a05]

wow that was me….. that is so weird :?

I knew I had posted here before but…… wow its so freaky reading a post from three years ago. I would have been doing my leaving cert then.

Anyway the name is as above. 20 currently. Studying Mathematical Sciences in UCC. chair of Netsoc and the Greens. hope to (realistically) either get into graphics programming or become a producer. got a long time left in college so that’s all ages away. hope to make Netsoc an IGDA student chapter.

My name’s Alick. i’m approaching the end of my final year studying Computer Games Programming at Teesside university over in England. I’m from Co. Armagh though.

I’m 22, for my placement year i was QA working on Driv3r and was introduced to the wonderful concept of crunch time, which gets worse when thegame is delayed by 6 months and the crunch time lasts that long again :(

had a few offers over here for when i graduate but I haven’t seen many Irish companies so I came across this site whilst doing research for that.

I program in DirectX and OpenGL in C++. i do some graphical stuff (my dissertation is on Real-Time Facial Animation from a static input image) but i like doing general game engine work and physics coding as wellnot too fond of the low-level graphical stuff like render engines and shit though.

there are a few folk around interested in narrative and interactivity so feel free to post questions and see if we can get them going on that. Also see the thread on game studies books under the education, training, jobs topic which has some links to recent books in the area.

Thanks aphra, I had a look at that list and I think it will be very useful. I have a few books on game theory and there’s a good bit of coverage on what I’m interested in, but I could always use more material.

I would actually like to look into learning a little basic programming at some point, just for fun peter. All I’ve ever done is playing with hex editors and html when I was a kid, but I’ve recently been thinking some basic flash stuff could be fun. Other than that I think programming would be too much for me outside doing a proper course and if i ever do that it will be far in the future. I don’t want to be stuck in college for ever O_O

      As you do ;)

Nahjust kiddin, what i’d recommend if you wanna try a bit of simple games programming, is get dark basic. Simple google search will find you it. Making games with it is a snap and its designed for newbie programmers who want to experiment with game ideas, but dont have full programming knowledge. Reckon in a weekend you could bang together a demo quite easily..

Flash is also a nifty resource, plenty of tutorials etc for it. so best of luck.

      ‘ello all.

I be krudd (aka Geoff) … from reading a few of the last (and most recent) posts I seem to be the only person not coming from balliers!!

Suppose when I wanted to get into games I should of been programming and modding when I was in me nappies (though that wasn’t all that long ago)

Anyways I’m in ITB, the hub of the Irish Gaming Industry…or not. We do have the graphics and gaming research group and they do stuff. I don’t talk to them, they forget who I am. It’s a win win situation. Anyways yes I LOVE to program and just make stupid little java games for my phone and what not. Since java is the language I learn in college it’s easy for me to make them. Been getting books on C++ and C# lately with the hope of trying to make some mods on something but never get anywhere. The XNA Framework (express…..student power) looks like it might be fun.

Anyways I’m trying to get into the games industry because I played a game once and I loved it. …..where is this going? Who knows….enjoy!

Oh yes….going into 3rd year of my degree! Dying to get back….summer web work sucks!!

Hi anyone and everyone, the names Richard Sneyd. I’ve been looking at this site for about a year now, but this is my first post! like many of the people i’ve seen here, i did the ludo course in BCFE and loved it! I’m registering for the 2 year CGHND on september the first.

I like programming, or atleast scripting languages. I also enjoy working with 3D max, Milkshape, Blender etc.. I’ve been messing around with Tourqe game engine, DarkBasic, etc.. aswell as course-taught software like 3D-Max, Photoshop, SoundForge and so on. I was hoping some of you with experience might be able to inform me on the state of the game industry in ireland, how much work there realy is, what fields most of the work is in etc.. apart from that i’d just like to say hello, and that i look forward to learning lots on these forums!

      hey hows it going,

      i’m Paul aka eDen

Studying computer science in ITB as well, in krudd’s class in fact! But unlike krudd I really dont want a future in just plain programming at all, I’m hoping to be an games artist or something along those lines. Was planning to do either art college or graphic design but ended up in computer science! So hopefully now I can mix the two

I’ll probably end up switching to ballyfermot at the end of my 3rd year anyway to get going on that plan.

I love using flash / photoshop and anything along those lines

Gaming nut anyway, love everything i’ve heard so far about the industry and its definitely where i want to be at some stage!

      Hello all!

My name is James Hegarty, currently in my first year of the new computer game development degree at Ulster university, studying at the magee campus in Derry. Im 18, an avid console and pc gamer in my spare time and have been programming for around three years now, mainly in C/C++ but i’ve picked up a few other languages along the way. At the moment im getting to grips with modelling in Max and maya after having bought a book or two on general advice to follow, hoping to get a good footing in that.

Well, short and sweet; thats all I can think of at the moment. I’ve been floating around the site for a while and was compelled to register and talk it up with the good folks here, anyway enough rambling!

Posted several times but never introduced myself, Eddie here! Am currently doing the MSc in Computer Games Technology in University of Abertay, Dundee. Have previously completed a BSc in Computer Science in UCC. I would nearly classify myself as a casual gamer but am starting to recapture a dormant love of games that got lost somewhere along the way when I started to grow up and money started going elsewhere, gulp gulp :D Main interests in gaming would be AI and Physics(maths still poor enough though-am trying to get there!) but am still learning the basics of graphics and DirectX so thats the priority at the moment!

Hey all, my Name is Thomas, Im 17, still in Leaving Cert (And dreading it..) I’ve had an intrest in games development for a couple of years, most Ive ever done is a couple of maps for CounterStrike, and mods for The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, and the occasional short 2d RPG with the RPGMaker Xp program. Its not true games development, but I figured I should start small. I consider my self a moderate gamer, I play gmaes almost every day, usuallymultiplayer LAN with my friends Well, thats all I can think of for the moment.

Hi everyone. I am the lead programmer on the half-life modification Natural Selection. I’m 33 years old and have 12 years experience working as a programmer and designer in the Telecoms industry. I have had a keen interest in gaming for as long as I can remember and have dabbled in gaming technologies for years. I still play a lot of games, though not to the excessive levels I did when I was still in college. I heard about this site Sean Blanchfield when I met him at a convention at UL earlier in the year, and I’ve lurked here a bit since then.

      Hey Everyone,
My name’s Jason Coomey. I’m currently working as a graphic designer/sub editor/writer for the Voice newspaper group. It’s published in Kilkenny, Tallaght, Galway and Laois and each week I write a games article for the Kilkenny and Galway editions. They’re written to be fun and interesting and a break from the normal cliched video game coverage you’d see in printed publications.
I come with a big question that’ll hopefully lead to cool stuff for some of us in the Irish gaming industry. I’m thinking that I can write articles about independently developed games created by people who visit this site, people in college and small gaming companies. People who don’t really have a PR agent to get their work out to the masses.
If anybody thinks that they can contribute in some way that’d be great. I know I’m a newcomer to the site but I did sign up before until I realised that the development side of things wasn’t for me.
I play guitar, do lots of writing, think too much and enjoy a good movie. I’m probably a bit too cynical but my approach is lighthearted enough. And I have time for people.
I’ll start a thread based around my above idea in general discussion so as not to muck this one up.
I look forward to hearing from every and anyone! This could be right cool!

Hello World! I’ve been watching the forums for a while and thought I should finally register :)
I’m finishing up my final year at DIT at the moment, doing a computer science degree specialising in games (I was one of those damnable students at the shindig :D).
I’ve created a few simple games over the years, and tinkered and puttered a lot with games related technologies (physics middleware, sound and graphics apis, a lot of OpenGL). I’m currently working on a game engine with a Ruby interpreter, which I based my thesis on.

I’m playing Deus Ex for the nth time :D

by the way some of the other college students put videos or examples of their work up on the web, sometimes on UTube, and put links here on the forums.

You guys might like to consider doing that too, or putting up profiles on gd.ie and linking to your own webpages…

      Hi All,

Similar to Baz, I have been watching the forums for a while now and thought it was about time I registered

I currently work for Oracle Software in the Marketing Department (not very exciting).

A big interest of mine is video games and more recently game creation. I like to write background stories for games and general ideas. It never goes any further than that really. I also like to create websites. I have two in production at the moment, http://www.kandogamers.com and http://www.cbargames.com, more so done for personal satisfaction.
I like visually stunning games like Assassins Creed or Guild Wars. Online games would be my real area of interest, like Guild Wars, or Battlefield

      Hiya,

I’m Scott. I’m 24, graduate of Uni of Ulster with a 2:1 in BSc Hons Computing Science.

Participated in Dare to be Digital 2007, where I was a programmer on Bathroom Buccaneers, an arcade style naval warfare game. (Link is to Youtube vid)

Been interested in Games Design since I was 12. Been interested in programming since I got an Amstrad CPC 464 when I was 7 or 8. Ahh the days of Quick Basic and (mis)use of Goto.

I’ve taken a programming route as I think it’s best for me to get into the Industry, but my end goal is Design. Don’t care so much what it is I’m designing, I just love creating things, be it characters, places, skills, classes, quests etc.

Currently learning more about Game Design from places like Sloperama and books I can get a hold of. Been designing and making some Unreal Tournament levels too.

Hi I’m Lee, editor of an Irish gaming blog/podcast site. Our site currently has 5 writers, most of which have spent some time in the retail area of the buisness. However two are continuing their education in game development.

I do not have any development skills myself, but games are a passion of mine, and I created the site to try and nurture and expand the Irish gaming community.

We plan to host a number of events over the coming months to try give as much exposure to Irish game development, and also try attract more talent to the industry. We believe we can achieve more through collaboration with other sites to achieve a greater goal, so if you want more exposure for your game or want to organise and event, give us a shout. If we can help, we will.

      Hi All,
I am going to be in Dublin for a few days in June and I would love to meet some local independent game developers in the area for a casual meet up somewhere.

We have just launched a new platform for indie developers – Wild Pockets – a free 3D browser-based game engine, distribution channels, and a built in transaction system.

I am happy to tell people more about this platform but mostly I’m hoping just to connect casually and hear what is going on in the Irish game development communities.

Please reach out if you would be interested in a gathering of some kind (and if you have some good recommendations!)

      Thanks!

Lately, I’ve been working on a little complete game, a 3d space shooter, for my porfolio (I would like to work as a game developer).
This, in my opinion, is the top ten of all time games:
      1) f.e.a.r (the first one, it has a revolutionary Ai )
      2) The complete gta saga.
      3) Manhunt
      4) Half life 2
      5) Max Payne
      6) Mafia
      7) Bioshock
      8 ) Left4dead
      9) Warcraft III
      10) Prototype

You will see we have programming and creative content threads but there is also a general discussion where you can start a thread just to tell people about your project.

      Good luck…

Hi. I’ve been lurking here for years so I thought I should probably post and say hello! :)

I’m Owen from Dublin. I’ve been interested in game development for the past few years. I made a couple of flash games last year, made a little bit of money off of them, nothing too exciting. I’m looking to continue making some flash games this year with a view to porting them to android to get some experience with mobile development, hopefully with a bit more success.

      Hi everybody,

Yes, I’m not so new around these parts but sure thought I’d reintroduce myself again as I haven’t posted in quite sometime I think.

Name is John Geoffrey, (nearly) 25, living in Vancouver, CA now. Was in Dundee for two years. Technically haven’t worked in the games industry as I’m mostly a web programmer but I’m always doing my damnedest to help the industry out with promotions and just general banter.

I’ll try to remember to come back here more often, and with lent starting tomorrow, (and pancakes today), you’re meant to give something up or take something on. Visiting GD.ie more often is my taking something on.

      :)

      Hi all,

My name is Mark Aherne, living and working as a web developer in Galway.

I do some game development in my spare time, as a hobby. In the past it’s been primarily mods (such as a GunGame mod for Call of Duty 4) and exploring idea using XNA but I’m currently working on a larger project in Unity (one which, when it’s done, I hope to sell as a commercial product).

Anyhow, I’m doing a Unity workshop in 091 Labs Galway next Monday, and I had to have one post before posting URLs, so here I am. :)

Hey all, my name’s James, fairly universally known as PROGRAM_IX. I’m studying Multimedia and Computer Games Development in UL. The intention has been there for years to join this site, but it was in my head that I’d tried and failed (whether or not that’s true I don’t know) and so I didn’t come back for ages. Now that I have I hope to make some friends in this little slice of Irish IT.

      About me:
      I love programming.
(Hardly necessary) I’ve been playing games at any opportunity for as long as I can remember.
I’m the type to stay up way too late. >.<
I’m a fan of 8-bit music (Anamanaguchi and anything from http://8bc.org). I also roll my own occasionally.
I’m a committed and enthusiastic Linux user.

Anyway, great to be here at last.

Thanks for the welcome, Thane. :) I’ve been terribly busy with coursework (still am) but I hope to start a demo game in the next month or so using C++ and OpenGL. The speakers at GamesFleadh were tremendously inspiring in that they said if you want a job, you need extra-curricular work. :D

On that note, you’ll probably see me in the Programming section sometime soon.

      Hello,

      The name’s Timothy,

I am a final year computer engineering student in Trinity.

Trying to break into the games industry but not sure where to start. I have released a game on the Android Market called Survival Trail, developed it solo so I could get a feel for every aspect of the design process e.g music, graphics, programming. Not the greatest game in the world but it’s a start.

Would love to form/join a team to work on a game.

Hi all, my name is Noel Ryan I am from Ennis in Co.Clare and I am a student at Pulse College in Dublin. I am studying Game Development and what I really want to do is Art for games. Concept Art and all that comes with it. I only decided to take this choice of career this time last year and it has been a fine year of becoming more than just an avid game player. Now I want to be part of making one. I have been drawing and sketching since I was 3 years old but I have only picked up a wacom tablet and started doing digital work in the past few months. I love it!!!
I was out for a drink with some of you guys and dolls last Thursday night and it was a pleasure.
Gamecraft is on the same day as college so I’m in two minds as to where I should go! I would love to be part of a team doing some drawing for the day. Then again I’d be drawing regardless. I might go! (any influence welcome btw!)

Any fellow artists and gamers out there who are willing to offer any hints, tricks or tips, training or work or anything!! I am all ears. I would love to hear from any Artist with wisdom he/she can offer.

      Here is my infant portfolio

I hope you like my stuff.

Not that there is anything wrong with learning BASIC, these days, beyond very simple stuff I’d be learning Python as a beginner language instead of BASIC.

      Hi everybody.

I’m Gary. After being big on games but also general writing when I was younger I diverged into doing animation in college, but I’m now coming full circle by making the start of a game for my 4th year animation project.
It’s been a while since I’ve done any programming, so I’m easing myself into engines and plugging away on getting those to work for me for now.

Looking forward to reminding myself of the frustration but eventual relief that is coding,

      Hi all,

David Ryan here, I’m a 3rd year in LIT Tipperary doing Games Design and Development. I am Treasurer of Tippsoc: LIT Tipperary’s Technology and Gaming Society. I do loads of awesome stuff like that.
      I’m a programmer/developer by trade(so to speak).
I’ve done a fair few cool events: GGJ 2011,GGJ 2012, Newgrounds Cabinjam 2012, WOWZAPP 2012, Gamesfleadh 2012 XNA Challenge and Robocode 2011.

I like doing things(competitions and jams).
I’ll be hoping to do the DirectX Challenge for Gamesfleadh 2013. And yeah, 3rd year project super awesome fun XD.

I’ve done work placement for 2nd year in a nice little call center software company where I made a website (which they now use as the live one).

I’ve experience with Java, C, Perl, Html, Javascript, CSS, C#, SQL Server and ASPX from college modules and things done in work placement.

I’ve done some python(project euler questions) and C++ too.
I will be hitting C++ hard for 3yp and for the sake of it.

Looking for paid work placement in the summer, not necessarily in games though, software would do :).

      Cheers.

      Hey there folks,

My name is John Griffin. I have just left my previous company (ioko) which was more involved with Over-the-top TV than Games. We built Sky Go, 4oD, iPlayer, RTE Player, ITV Player, UPC’s Horizon.TV, AT&T U-Verse and many many others.

I am now doing a startup with a couple of others in the casual games space. We are providing a platform that will help developers make more money from their games through challenges. We are building a cross-platform inter-game messaging solution.

I am based here in Dublin after just coming back from UK and US where I have been for the last 18 years. Eh … I think I am probably a bit older than many of you :-)

Games Developers are going to be our customers so I am looking forward to meeting as many of you as I can over coming months. Our goal is to help you make more money from your games.

Again, wonderful to have met those of you present today, and I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of you soon, both here and in person. :D

Trying to place a face to your name Andy, especially since you’ve worked in a lot of the QA companies I did at the same time :P

May introduce myself at the next shindig!

      Hey folks!

I’m an expat game designer & developer returned to Dublin this past week. I’ve been working in Dundee, Scotland for the last year since graduating from a Master’s course at Abertay University. Now I’m hoping to get a small indie operation off the ground over the next few months back in Ireland.

I’m on twitter at @paulmcgg, and you can see some of my recent work at feltthought-dot-com

      Hi all,

Have been registered on this site for a while, but now that I’m moving to Dublin and actually in a position to attend events, I’m hoping to become a bit more active.

Mostly, I have little enough experience in actual design, but I’m very interested in getting involved in the writing sides of video games. I’ve won a few awards for short film scripts and have made it through various shortlists with Filmbase (still waiting to hear back on final results) so I’d like to think I have a fair handle on stories/character, though I’m completely new to writing games. Would love to jump in on anything anyone would like a bit of help with!

      So…yeah. Hi.

      Helloooo

I’ve been lurking on this site for most of my adult life now so its about time I joined up!

I’ve been looking into game development for over 10 years but never pursued it until recently. I’m currently working on my first game with a friend of mine in our spare time (I’m a full time employee and parent!). I’ve done a few prototypes in the past and I’m very well read in the game design world but always learning. Looking to learn even more from you guys!

I’m entertaining the idea of building a community in Limerick seeing as there is a Game Development course here in UL. I will be posting about this methinks later on :)

there should be a few folks there in Limerick to hook up with.

Not sure what is happening with Open emotion who used to be nearby the campus.

      Welcome!

Yea, haven’t heard from them either. I’ll see if I can dig up something on them as they are friends of friends. Thanks for the welcome!

      Hi ,

I am an artist, musician, digital media and game designer from California now based in Ireland.

I am currently in production on my new game Monsters Of Mayhem for my indie game company Back In Time Games.

I’m here to network and help build the games industry here in Ireland and meet fellow game developers.

Hey all. Bit of a long time lurker here, said I’d introduce myself. I’m Paul, and I’ve been playing around with Unity for about 18 months now, making simple demos. Finally released one now on Android so maybe I can finally call myself a game designer.

I’ve a background in Multimedia and PR and am based in Cork City. I’ve had my attention drawn to a lot of interesting things on this forum and site, so hopefully I can find some stuff to contribute myself at last.

I posted an introduction on the Galway Games Group subforum…about a year ago? So, here goes a slightly more up-to-date one.

I finished my Master’s degree in Software Design & Development at NUIG just under two months ago, and am now looking for full-time work as a software developer inside or outside Galway. I’ve been using Unity for just under 18th months, and so far I’ve only made a few demos and learning projects. That said, I am currently working on an endless runner, which is mostly done – I’m just hunting for sound effects and making artwork to go with it.

      Hi folks,

It has abeen a long, long time since I was active in the old Gamedevelopers.ie forums so I should probably (re)introduce myself!

I’m Lead Designer at Playground Games whom I’ve recently joined. Before that I was at Zynga where I was lead designer on FarmVille and the Bubble Safari franchise. You might be able to guess but my specialisation is in monetisation, F2P and mobile game design. No I’m not actally evil. I get a kick out of F2P because I’m a strong believer in model driven design, data driven design, analytics and academic theory which are all things that F2P puts front and centre.

I graduated from BCFE and went on to do a Masters at Brunel University, before starting out in the industry at Climax Games. I feel I owe a lot to those two fine institutions.

I’ll be back in Ireland at Christams, so if there are any meetups formal or otherwise I’d love to come along and catch up.

      Cheers,

      John
