      Hey all,

I’m back in college today!! YAY!! Had one day off yesterday and didn’t know what to do with myself. quite sad really! But anyways just found out that next year one of the modules is Computer Games Development. I know one module isn’t much but that’s something to look forward to, also this year I have Computer Graphics, boo yeah! Sorry I’m just excited to be back also because I’m taking over Compsoc (ITB computer society) and well it gives me loads of things to do!

Which reminds me, anyone know of what stuff I should get compsoc to do?? At the moment we need to find a place for the computers that we have and to fill some of them up (some people decided to raid the storage last semester and we have about 4 graphics cards between around 10 computers).

Anyways back to the grind stone, well actually home cos there’s nothing on today and nothing to do because the place is still only starting up again!

ah excitement about computer graphics. That grin will be off your face when ye get down to it. It can get quite hard, if the course is taught correctly. i.e. algorithms behind the graphics engine instead of heres opengl, heres the functions. make a house.. 8)

Ha!! Yeah I know that, been trying a few things myself over the summer and well lets just say….I suck! I know it’s gonna be hard but for the moment I’m just dying to do something!! Having free time is wierd for me as I’ve been working 6days a week for the past few months!!

      Anyways YAY college…for now!

You should have seen the computer graphics course I did in 4th year in DCU. Was the biggest joke of a course ever. Got about as advanced as what is a bezier plane.

Funnily enough they decided to completely redo the Graphics module in DCU this year. Its changed from two semesterly modules into one single semester course. Still not really sure what material is going to be covered but fingers crossed its an improvment over what I’ve seen of the previous stuff. :?

ucc’s one was good but again it was only 1 half module, so limited by time they were.

But still they did some good stuff, focused on the algorithms which is more important than any api etc.

I think after my year they realised it was completely rubbish and re-did it. Hopefully you’ll be alright by now!

Are ye lads talking about the 5 credit module part of Comp Sci degree in UCC?Turns out that they thought it was so rubbish(and funding problems) they scrapped the Graphics module altogether last year!!

On another note started in Abertay last week with 2 lads from UCC and turns out that 2 other lads from Ireland have also started the course. The course is 17 people so it turns out that the Irish are the most prominent ‘race’ in the course!Bit of a farce isn’t it??!!
Any of ye done the Abertay Msc course, any tips/what to be wary of/look out for?How do we get involved in Dare to be Digital-is it true that Abertay student gain entry automatically??

      Questions over for now!!

They didnt scrap the graphics course because it was rubbish, they scrapped it because it was too tough a course for people and they failed it. Hence the numbers were getting lower every year. Year i did finals year there was prob 5-10 ppl at most, i dont know how many actually sat the exam.
Personally i dont think colleges sho do this, but hey with falling cao\cas points the calibre drops from year to year, what ya gonna do. Which seems to be a common trend IMHO courses adapted based on the level of skill\knowledge of the class. Funding generally isnt a problem with a module because the lecturer is already being paid.

So sounds like we’ll be interview more irish in the year or 2 ahead. Who knows Sega Driving Studio might be taking a few of ye on, if ye fair out well.

5 out of 17 in Abertay course this year…when I was there it was 6 out of 10…1 Scot, 1 Icelandic, 1 American and 1 from Suranam I think it was.

Haha…automatic entry to Dare…not a chance! Keep you eye on http://www.daretobedigital.com over the coming months and you’ll find out how to enter. The competition is extanding a lot this year, so no idea when its going to start. I’m sure you’ll get an email about it in your uni account at some point anyway.

Ah yes, Stephen, a mate of mine from here in DCU just started over there. Kind of handy that I can pick his brain when the time comes for me to apply. :D
