Next Dublin Shindig, so lets get the ball rolling and pick a date far the future so everyone can stick it in their diary.
Mid October far enough?? Leaves room for another before Christmas time.

1st is good with me.
Was a bit packed last time but I think Nealons is a good venue if we ring ahead and get space reserved. (Good as is roughly equidistant for those in the hub and the centre of town folk.)
That said I don’t mind where as long as we can all hear each other. -

Yes, I might put up a few signs too. People did not necessarily know which group we were.
Maybe we should all get t-shirts!

would it be useful to have some way of doing a ‘show and tell’ at the next shindig…beyond just passing around a phone or using your laptop? I am thinking of bringing a data projector.
If you are interested in giving a short demo of something you are working on then pm me or just post on this thread.
just an idea

Just realised I’m attending Eurogamer that weekend.
Maybe we can fit in another shindig around GamerExpo.
Either way enjoy the Shindig

Hi Aphra,
it seems you read our mind :) We, the first students of the Msc in Digital Games at DIT, wanted to give a small presentation of our final project and, if everything goes ok, even the first prototype of our game. We consider it a good occasion for feedback and comments.Cheers,
Marco

good to see it might be worth bringing in a projector.
I think the Game On exhibit opens today (20th) in the academy at the top of O’Connell street. See http://www.mcd.ie/listings/fg.php?c=2359990&ar=gameon&cat=all
I saw this about six years ago in the Barbicon in London. I really enjoyed it. I will probably go again to see if it has changed at all.

ok I was just talking to the owner of Nealons…and I have good and bad news.
First upstairs is totally booked on Friday the 1st for a charity event but they can offer us Thurs the 30th or Friday the 8th upstairs…Can people let me know which would be preferable?
Second, the good news. They have installed a new LCD screen and TV and there is free wifi in the pub…so he suggests that if we have the appropriate connector from our laptops we can display on a very nice large screen!! I might need some technical advice from you on what connector this might be…
Third, also good news. The Game On exhibit runs late each evening so you could catch it before or even after the shindig!
ok…dates need to be sorted first. sorry about the need to change.
Aphra.

the bad news is… good new for me :) I realised that I won’t be in Ireland on the 1st, neither on the 30th, but the 8th is absolutely perfect.
Given that we’re going to present our project, I’d really like to participate to this one. Of course, if it suits everyone else. -
20/09/2010 at 10:31 pm #46291AnonymousInactive
I can do the 8th.
-
21/09/2010 at 9:51 am #46292AnonymousInactive
the is perfect for me….
Aphra we can bring connectors if needed, if someone can check which connector is needed (DVI etc)
we may need an extra long cable also
-
21/09/2010 at 10:09 am #46293Aphra KKeymaster
ok..so moving it until Oct. the 8th seems to be working for a lot of people. That is still a Friday which works for those travelling.
Marco are you guys Mac people? will that matter?
Maybe someone with a bit more tech savvy than me who works someone near Nealons could pop in and check the set up. Pm me if you are such a person..
ta
Aphra.
PS I will give it one or two more days before I confirm date with the venue

I can make Oct 8th :).
I’ll be around Capel St on Thursday evening if you need me to pop into Nealon’s to check out the TV connectors for you.
-
21/09/2010 at 11:18 am #46296AnonymousInactive
I’m going to the PlayStation Move launch party on the 1st, so the 8th works better for me too.
I have a bunch of DVI/VGA adapters for the Macbook Pro, I’ll bring em along.

Nope, we have a laptop. I do know that if someone with a Mac wants to show stuff, he/she will need the correct adaptor.

great thanks…
Brendan…some discussion over in another thread but it is unclear how long Game on will run for. Mind you, I talked to someone last week who thought it would run until Christmas.

I asked the people at Game On at the weekend – They said it is there until January.
TBH I wasn’t that impressed by the exhibition though.

Called over at Nealon’s yesterday evening. They said they had a projector we could use. They are going to text or ring me with the connection type as they didn’t know off hand.
I’d expect a projector to have VGA and composite video at a minimum though.
-
05/10/2010 at 2:25 pm #46349AnonymousInactive
So person in charge of Nealon’s rang me back and he said he says the connector is something like a "small parallel port" on the back of the projector – So I’m assuming he means VGA.
It was also pointed out to me the the Russia v Ireland football match  is on on Friday and he said he wants the screen for that, but we can use it before or after the match.
I’ll bring some connectors and adapters along.
-
05/10/2010 at 3:44 pm #46350Aphra KKeymaster
great…he said nothing about that when I booked the space…
I see the match starts at 7.45..maybe I can see if we can use the screen before the match…or do people want to watch the pre-match build up too??? That starts at 7!
What time does it finish it…?
Aphra.
-
05/10/2010 at 3:51 pm #46351AnonymousInactive
According to the rte website the TV schedule is booked from 1900-2200 :(.
-
06/10/2010 at 3:53 pm #46353Aphra KKeymaster
Hi all
I talked to the pub by telephone today and we agreed that we could do our presentations from 7-7.45 and then turn the TV over to the match.
It means if people want to hear the presentations they should be there by 7 and I would encourage people to be there to hear our two projects present.
And if people want to watch the match they can still do it too…
I hope this keeps everyone happy :D

Hello everyone,
I’d like to thanks everyone that was there yesterday evening, especially aprha, for making it a great night. I hope we could get the picture made during the presentation :)I realised we didn’t tell you how to follow the development of the game (even though we posted it already somewhere in the forum), so here you go:
We’ll enter in beta phase (hopefully) very soon, and yes we’ll need testers!
-
11/10/2010 at 9:36 am #46367Aphra KKeymaster
Thanks to everyone who attended last Friday night. We pretty much filled the entire upstairs of Nealons so well done us. Also some people had made it up from Limerick and Abbeyleix so that was great also.
We had two presentations.
1) The MSc in DIT group which Marco has just posted about.
2) The NDRC project Game Brains. Shane is to send me information on their beta testing also so people here can get involved.
See http://www.ndrc.ie/portfolio/entertainment/game-brains/big thanks to John and Brian from DIT who got us cables and a data projector and to amethyst for help with cables and lights also.
I will download those pics and send to the participants as soon as I can.

Following their presentation at last week’s shindig the NDRC’s Game Brains project is going beta.
If you’re interested in Behavior Trees or video game AI please check out their Beta release.
Game Brains is a behavior treed editor and runtime (in C++). Integrate it into your game engine of choice and start using behavior trees in your games.
For the game brains beta go to: http://www.neatsciences.com and sign up.
