Hah you bet me to it Damien. I do believe this quote sums up my opinion on such terms..
Podcast: Someone had the revolutionary idea of taking a compressed audio file and putting it online. Yeah, doesn’t sound so sexy when I describe it for what it is, does it you morons? It would have been a great idea if streaming audio wasn’t already around for over a decade before the word “podcast” entered the lexicon. [/quote:af9c3bb74c]
I’ll give you one guess who said it… :D -

No its not.
Its ascribing a a product name onto a generic mp3 file type. Its stupid apple marketeering again.. -
11/04/2006 at 8:06 am #30860AnonymousInactive
What if it’s not in mp3 format? It can still be a podcast.

Whats wrong with having a word based on a way of using what that word refers to? And why, just because there is a linguistic similarity, are you limited to playing it on another device?By your logic you should only use your walkman when you are walking, or only use your laptop on your lap? Words derive from a common use, not an exclusive situation relevant to the word stem. To be offended because someone creates a word for a thing that has linguistic similarities to a way of using that thing is a little rich, no?

*Drops his some Tayto on the ground and then Hoovers them up while listening to music on his Walkman*
tbh, I hate all of that rubbish, its just even more annoying since its a “must have” item now. It’s all “OMFG I WANT AN iPOD!!1111eleventy one” you never heard people on like that about the humble old vacuum cleaner…
-
12/04/2006 at 8:40 pm #30912AnonymousInactive
If people got that excited about vacuum cleaners I’d question what they use them for…

Ah no. A walkman uses a cassette.
A mp3 player or other advanced listening device uses an audio file.
podcase comes from ipod, defining a universal name for an audio file based on a single player device.
A walkman’s name came from a suggested way of using it, not based on the name on the user product thats used by it. -

Do you use a hoover or a vacuum ?
