How’s it going there everyone.
Just an idea to be bandied around, but I was thinking that a regular monthly or bi-monthly meeting up may be quite benefitial as it will give people time to chat about problems, discuss etc.
The launch of GD.ie was brilliant from my point of view because not only did I get the chance to catch up with those of you who I’ve known for some time, but also got a chance to speak to some of those of you who I didn’t know.
There were some great ideas going around on the night, and as GD.ie is supposed to help build up a community, surely having real gatherings would help this too. Also considering that there are people joining all the time it would give them a chance to meet up.
From reading through the introductions we seem to already have a fairly good mix of people. We’ve some of you who have worked in the industry abroad with a wealth of experience, those of you currently working within the industry here and those like me who are studying in college hoping to get into the industry.
A couple of pints usually losens up the tongue, and even just sitting around chatting really does help. That and my fondness of the aforementioned alcohol >:)

> discuss etc.Some sort of scheduled meeting, maybe every two months, would be a great idea, if only to meet up with other people in the field for a pint. Having the dates pre-determined long in advance could also help people who don’t live near Dublin to arrange the trip up ( or down! ).
Every other meeting could be an official one, where speakers could give a quick 5 minute talk or demonstrate their latest wares before heading to the pub ( 3 times a year would probably be sufficient at the moment for this ). The non-official ones would involve heading straight down to the pub! :) As the size of the group grows, new arrangements could be made as required.
I also had a great time at the gamedevelopers.ie launch meeting up with people I knew, and meeting new people or putting faces to people I had just chatted to via email. I’m definitely looking forward to the next one!

Hi all,
Well that sounds like a good idea to me (if only to hear Paul Hayes telling stories about Mal!).
So social evenings every two months and every now and again maybe a themed evening on a particular topic.
Now we only have to decide where is a good place to meet and what day of the week?
Also should we start after the summer or should we have one in June just to keep the momentum up?
oh, and I don’t think we can afford the catering again so we’ll all have to bring our own lunchboxes :)

Hmm, that sounds good. Whenever sounds good although I’ll be around Europe on the tear for the month of June so I’ll make the next one.
As for a location, town seems pretty handy, anywhere will do if we can get a couple of tables reserved and the two places we’ve been to date have been a good laugh. Themed evenings though might be a bad idea, Mal might arrive dressed as a mobile phone >:) But you never know, you could get Nokia to bring along some of their N-Gages to let us all have a looksie considering they’re sponsoring the site.
I doubt catering would be much of a problem either, we always have Abrakestabra after a sessiun. But as Mal was saying, maybe having it something like the 2nd tuesday of a month or something like that might allow people to stick it down in their diaries in advance to make arrangements, as well as letting journalists know where to come if any of the companies want to get some announcements made.

Hey all,
A bit of notice would be great, I’m from Dublin but I work in Donegal and I’d love to head along and meet you all have the craic etc. Weekend (maybe Friday) would be best for me probably cos I have to bus it to and fro, but I could make arrangements if it was gonna be a weeknight. -

I don’t really have any limitations on when and where, but somewhere in june would be nice :-)

ok people there have been suggestions that Friday the 20th of June might be a good evening to have our next ‘shindig’.
One suggested location was Thomas Reads – although if my memory serves me right that is usually jammed on a Friday and pumping music which might mean not too good for getting to know people. (Or am I getting old??)
Any thoughts on that venue or suggetions for elsewhere on that evening?

the 20th is ok, but especially since english is not my native language, and because there are quite a few different sounding dialects in Ireland, it might be best if we wouldn’t have to shout too hard too understand each other :-)

20th sounds good, happens I should be in Dublin that weekend. Thomas Reads may be a little loud for getting to know people alright, Huba in Dame street is a nice place for a chat and is usually quiet enough, never been in on a Friday night though and it might be a bit small.

I’ve just called the manager of Toners, on Baggott Street Lwr. and they will reserve two tables downstairs for us from 7pm on Friday the 20th. June. They will probably put signs on the table.
So how about that?
Toners is just after Black Tie as you walk from Stephen’s Green down Baggott Street – on the right..
It is a fairly smallish pub that serves good Guinness and gets packed but is not trendy so never really jammed..

Don’t think I can make the 20th in Dublin unfortunately.
I will be in Dublin on the 27th for the Bernard Stolar workshop. Anyone else attending that? Maybe I will get a chance to put some faces to names there.

Sorry people, won’t be back from London for our shindig so you’ll have to introduce yourselves.
Jab from DigiCC has kindly offered to be there around 7pm, make sure we have tables and see if you have any feedback to send back to the site or feedback after the Stolar workshop.
Jab is rather distinctive looking..he’ll be the guy with the long blonde hair and shaved sides..all in black….strange looking eyes sometimes…
go up and introduce yourself…

Hi Aphra and all,
Found Toners alright, it was finding game developers that proved difficult!! Ah no, it ended up with about 5 of us from Torc, Aaron ex Havok and Mal from CanDo, The Jab of course, Boadle popped along for a while and a mate of mine whos ex Sega, Climax and Sony and a few other heads. It was quiet enough but good craic and it was great to meet the names in person and talk about how bad Enter the Matrix is. I’ll definitely be down for the next one, hopefully there’ll be a few more there. One of the lads from Havok was heading to the states so most of that crew were in Mahaffys plus the Bernard Stolar thing was on too which prob had a lot to do with the turnout. -

Well nice to see so many Irish people over at the Edinburgh International Games Festival last Monday. I never thought an Irish accent would come in so useful but it seems all you have to do is stand around talking to another Irish person and suddenly you are in the middle of an Irish group.
Met Ian Kiigan from Denki in Dundee, Damien Gallagher from Torc in Donegal and a couple of people from the North West Institute who are setting up a games course. Anne O’Reilly from Enterprise Ireland in Glasgow was also there, as were some of the Dare to be Digital teams from Abertay university.
As a result we made our presence felt in the football quiz and I would say damaged a few of the cocktails being served later on that night..

The party at the end of the night allowed us to make quiet a few contacts in the industry…EA, Sony, Lost Toys, Argonaut and many others….great night!D.

that place was pretty dark and the cocktails pretty strong…! I was looking out for you guys but forgot my glasses so I guess that might have been the problem..! I was up in the university all the previous Friday but spent most of the day in meetings with people – including Jim T and I. Marshall.

We ended up staying out for the night getting the train back to Dundee at 6 in the morning…
Sorry to have missed you in Dundee too! Good people to be meeting though! Should have called into us for a coouple of minutes, and seen the stress rising as we’re down to the last week of development now! The “no sleeping” thing is really beginning to start and the need for caffine is growing….
