Okay, been a while since I’ve been in this neck of the woods.
Doing a MA in Design Practice, graphic designed focus, and I’m wondering if anyone out there has any ideas on a dissertation that could benefit the Irish industry. Remember, the focus of the course is not games but it does cover things such as design/brand strategies, visual promotions and multimedia/interface type stuff.

Hi Janto,
What about taking a look at the building of brands in the game development sector? Maybe you could take some existing companies to formulate a case study. R* or “Rockstar” being a good example or “Just Add Monsters” or “Pandemic” companies like that. Or just marketing games in general from the packaging of the game itself right up to high-profile launches material and publicity stunts etc.Basically what does it take (outside of a great product) to make a successful games brand?
Just an idea ;)
Cheers,

If you decide on anything marketing orientated, give me a shout and I’ll see if I can get you pointed in the right direction.
Ideas though, maybe something about the symbiotic relationship between video games and driving the computer graphics card industry, I’ve always found that one of the most interesting things about graphics considering the only people who buy high-end PC’s are either graphic designers or gamers, and Alienware (super-fast PC’s) is now shipping from Ireland

would suggest something on GUI/HUD design and the whole area of accessibility/usability in gaming myself… many great games are let down by some truly appalling UI design
Microsoft have a game usability lab now too… have a white paper they put around somewhere. I can probably dig it up and forward if you’re interested

Some good things to think about… yes, I agree that UI’s often seem to be tacked on or poorly considered… I’m just trying to think of ways of ensuring that things have specific relevance to the Irish industry, and the specific problems faced by Irish companies.

If you want Irish-specific, consider for instance game design vs the under-use of the Irish patenting system, which may be advantageously used to derive all game-derived royalties tax-free (under the ‘technical’ design-focused patent).
The implications for the Irish videogame industry is that (potentially) all corporate revenue is tax-free (Ireland is the only country in the developed world where this is possible, as far as I know), providing a significant business advantage. The corollary is that design should be innovative (in technical and not-so technical terms).
Ensues synergistic effects, increased attractivity to investors (no tax = higher ROI), innovative technology & solutions (necessarily involving some component of ‘graphic’ design, since the medium is visual) etc.
I’m obviously a bit biased here (:D) but it would advantageously complement a lot of good things (white papers & articles) that have come out ot the IGDA recently.

Sounds like it has some potential… there’s a nice combination of business, creativity and Irish focus there. Anyone else have anything they’d like dug up?

Okay, I’m thinking about working on time management and deadlines…
Design Time: How time constraints and the use of deadlines influences the way designers practice their profession, and alternative strategies for dealing with time management.
Not really much connection to anything suggested, but it’s the practice side of things that’s interesting me, why things are the way they are.

Hi Janto,

What about some information on the differences in assistance between companies in Ireland and in Northern Ireland?
