Hi everyone,
I’ve managed to get my hands on a dev kit for either PS2 or XBox to develop a game as a final year project. I was just wondering if anybody had any good links to resources that would help me on this project. All and any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I’ll even mention ye in my dissertation. :)
Thanks in advance,
Niall

Hi,
All i know about the PS2 kit is that the main web resource seems to be at http://playstation2-linux.com/
They have forums and examples there. I havnt used it myself so i dont know how helpful the community is there.
I dont think that warrents a mention in the report though!
What kind of game are you thinking of doing?

Do you know which one you’ve got ??If you still have a choice, pick the xbox. You’ll have to do so much stuff with the ps2…

If you get the dev kit they come with api’s samples etc.
Id go with omen, go with the xbox, ms’s documentation and samples are much clearer. Also they’re setup is much simpler. visual studios+xbox devkit+xbox sdk = game
Ps2 is a bitch to program.

Hi,
Yep XBox is first choice alright. We are in teams of two and one has to take the PS and the other the XBox and seeing as one of the other group was on a 14 month placement with Microsoft I have a feeling they are going to get the XBox. I’m still going to try and push for it though. As you mentioned it would be clearer and easier.
The project is being sponsored by Logitech and I’m doing it here in U.C.C. which may interest one or two of you. If the project goes well this year it will elp the college get funding and support for the games development course they have been trying to make available so fingers crossed.
Thanks for all the feedback and I’ll let ye know which one I get. I might even do up a webpage with my goings on and progress.
Thanks again,
Niall

Thanks P.J.
We are going to do a driving or FPS by the way. Not set in stone yet but they are the popular choice at the moment. FPS especially as there are massive amounts of resources available and a driving game to try and be a little different as pretty much everyone has throw together an FPS at some stage as a final year project.

I’m doubtful that it would go ahead next year but David Murphy is my project supervisor so I’d say email him and he might be able to help you.
I’ve only met with him once so far but he seems like a very decent guy and I’m sure he’d be happy to help although it takes him some time to respond to emails. His address is below. -

Hello again,
Okay I managed to get my hands on the XBox dev kit (Well not yet but next week hopefully). Does anyone know of any good online resource web sites for xbox developers? I keep getting sent to mod chip sites when I search which is really starting to annoy me.
Thanks,
Niall

Niall[/quote:070937335c]I’d be surprised if you find many/any – the console vendors are pretty tight on protecting the console’s inner workings. Check with your supervisor, but I’d again be surprised if he/the college have not had to sign confidentiality agreements to beat the band

Surely if you have a xbox your uni has signed something with microsoft and as such they’ve sent the uni out documentation on it or it’ll be coming with the xbox. Thats the documentation that you have to trust in.

Yeah there is documentation provided with the kit but I was hoping to find some sort of community who may be able to offer insight into any problems or questions that may arise. Just to clarify I don’t have the kit yet. We are still waiting for them to arrive and yes there are confidentiality agreements. Thanks for the feedback.

Count your lucky stars you got the xbox and not the ps2 :) Best of luck, and cheers for the info on the course.. I’m currently investigating options along these lines.
Eoin.

nice going with the kit niall, wish i had landed one for my project in final year. nice to see games dev taking off in u.c.c. just finish my msc in games ai under barry o sullivan.
if you have a legit xbox kit then you get access to the ssl dev site which has all you need to know. also you get sdk docs.

Bombshell has been dropped that we don’t have an XDK whereas the other group has one for the PS2. Not that its relevant but the slimline PS2 isn’t compatible with the SDK. Anyway apparently we can develop on PC, burn it to disk and get it to run on XBox. I’m very sceptical of this. Anybody any ideas that doesn’t involve modding the XBox?
Thanks,
Niall
