I noticed that ‘Creative DIscussions was removed from the honourable ‘Sticky’ list. I would just like to know what makes a thread sticky, and at what point does it become ‘unstuck’. I understand that there has to be a thread turnaround and rotation of some sort but some topics are quite broad and will never be fully or even partially covered.
Is it possible to have new topics added beside ‘General discussions’?There was talk of this at one of the unofficial shindigs and the idea seemed supported (at least by some present)
In addition, maybe you could have an archive topic in the main section for threads that might date badly but still have relevance.
What do you think? -

adding other categories AND an archive one sounds like a good idea to me and a sensible compromise to the “what should constitute a sticky and what shouldn’t ” debate

well any of the administrators can make a thread sticky or conversely make it unstuck.
It really only arises on the general forum. My rule of thumb is that particularly interesting and general threads should be stuck. Also threads which have a lot of views seem candidates to be stuck.
We admins, haven’t all agreed yet on a particular rule as such so one of us unstuck some of the threads today….not wishing to name names…(!)
threads can be restuck if people think they should be, I have no problem with that.
we could also move creative discussions elsewhere on the site..
or we could look at creating an archive..although I think creative discussions is not quite reading to be archived…

I think threads which have a lot of views and/or posts should probably be stickies, e.g. ‘Creative Discussions’ and ‘The Myth of Innovation’ being prome examples…
Or maybe they simply need to be moved into another (new) section as General Discussion is perhaps… well, too general!
anyway, that’s my tuppence worth for the mo…

so it seems our rule of thumb might be….popularity in terms of posts/views and generality/longivety..
ok by me..

yeah, but Shindigs are ephemeral… and we seem to have evolved a mechanism whereby each Shindig gets it’s own thread anyway…
and important threads (such as examples given previously) deserve to be given some exposure, i think, to casual/first-time visitors to the boards. they may not be seen unless there’s a recent post
perhaps, it’s the ‘resources’ and ‘shindigs’ threads that should be moved out of General Discussion to give them more prominence?
just to add another twist to the debate

Some general forum thoughts…
– In general, a thread that goes past about 30 posts tends to wander off topic and should be taken to a new thread.
– Having too many threads stickied tends to mean that newer, promising threads dont get the readership they deserve since they are further down the page.
– Sticky threads are there for resources and introductions so that people get their first questions answered and begin to feel at home in the community immediately.
– Objectively, what makes “creative discussions” more deserving of stickyness then “Why do you play games”?
– should Creative Discussions not have its own forum rather then its own thread if its that important?

I don’t think the issue here is only about ‘creative discussions’. I aggree with some of the policies on a thread becoming ‘sticky’ or not, I was wondering if some of the criteria for choosing a sticky topic could be used in another way.
I just thought maybe gamedevelopers.ie could have some more ‘resident’ topics other than the very general “General Discussions’ and ‘Feedback’.Hey if you don’t aggree then that’s fine, it was just a suggestion.

Perhaps because ‘why do you play games?’ is a question, and “creative discussions’ was a suggestion, and a very broad one at that. (Which by the responce made me think it might work as a general topic in the first place)

I think there is room for “General Discussions” and “Creative Discussions” side by side. Somethin’ for the content kids!

Hey Carley, look what you started!
well actually this is just resurrecting a conversation we’ve already had which is about reorgansing or adding new forums to the boards.
seems like we could look at adding a new topic like creative discussions to the game development section or we could add another topic to the general topics.
I also think maybe we should take some of the information from resources and either have a topic on this or move it off forums to the resources section of the website…

—————————————————————————-Carley beat me to the punch on this one!
I do think some threads are more important than others (that’s subjective, of course) but I think there is broad agreement that some of the threads mentioned ARE important because the issues under discusison are of perennial interest, e.g. creativity and innovation, to name two….
perhaps the solution is a more permanent forum for threads that are like that, as has been suggested
i also think Dave’s idea of a forum/thread for beginner’s outlining rules, expected behavious is not a half bad one considering some of the nonsensical posts elsewhere on the forums this week!

If I understand why people enjoy games, and you understand how to be creative in a game, are my games not going to be better? (where better is defined by what % of people get a positive experience from having played the game)

Dave… that’s not the issue, this is ONLY about maybe having a few more topics…
I am NOT debating which topic has more importance.
And I would never be so arogant as to assume I know everything about how to be creative in a game in the sense that you replied to my post.‘Why people enjoy games’ is a relevant topic but why must it be in competition….surely these forums are for imput and discussion.
You asked a question and I responded to it, not to the game developing implications of it. -

:)
Not trying to argue the deeper meaning of Life, the universe and creativity (at least in this thread). Note I already suggested that Creativity have its own forum rather then thread.

Surely the “Buisness…” and “Legal” forums could be merged together?
