running searches on databases and presenting it in a reader friendly format?

      only a guess….

Data mining is the task of extracting some new (and previously unknown) piece of information from an existing dataset. This is performed using some Machine Learning technique. It can be quite interesting if you are into AI, as you can learn about a lot of those Machine Learning techniques, Neural Networks, Bayesian Networks, k-Nearest Neighbour, Decision Trees etc.

One famous example, is the idea that supermarkets could track the habits of customers (as a whole), by keeping track of what is bought at the check out. But they were unable to make much sense of this data set (since it is potentially huge). Having mined the data using some Machine Learning algorithm, they could see that; of the large number of people that would buy nappies, there was a large correlation to those that also bought beer. What this was, was fathers who would be picking up nappies at the shop, would also pick up beer too. With this information, some supermarkets then decided to start putting the baby-products aisle and the beer aisle quite close together "for convenience"

Data mining, from a gaming perspective, will result in the branding of game objects, so the gun you hold in your hand will have a cola sticker on the side. I am personally opposed to having my game play interrupted by…..washing powder adverts…..but we’re heading that way.

It could also allow us to gain a better understanding of how people play games, and allow us to design levels which are more intuitive in terms of gameplay. Data mining is just a tool, what you do with it just depends on whether you are either ethical or a marketing person.

Well, at least in game advertising at the moment is relavent to the context, so billboards display ads that you would be likely to see when you are, for example, looking around in a city. But I would still prefer for computer games not to become one more tentacle of the corperate world.

The fact that I am alright with something like this makes me slightly uneasey, though. But I suppose I won’t have any real complaint until your fantasy RPG is giving out quests to bring someone "TOTALLY COOL REFRESHMENT with ZERO CALORIES!"
