What was the very first game you ever created/programmed?

Mine first attempt was when i was about 10 i tried to get the code for a game to work. It was for one of those games you had to type in all the code yourself and it was never saved. It was in basic and on an Amstrad CPC and it didnt work for me :(

Much later for my final year project in college i wrote an Isometric turn based tactical combat game in C++ and DirectX 7.
I loved writing code seeing my characters move about screen etc. I never fully completed the project. Would have been quiet nice if i had got some polished graphics and intro screen etc and some nice sounds.

From then on it has been my life.

Was probably a game called Coal Miner, again written in Basic from one of those books. This was on a Sharp MZ-700 (great machine). No idea, but guessing I can’t have been much older than 7. Was a text based almost adventure game.
Kinda shied away until uni then, and started with Java with a simple tic-tac-toe, a more complex Connect 4 variant including network/multi-player/AI.
A simple shooter and a driving game on the Net Yaroze.
Then onto my first look into DirectX with a simple 3D platformer and a 3d racing game.

Not being a programmer, my first attempt was “General Knowledge Quiz” in basic on the ol’ c64

      Hiya,

Last year for my diploma in Software Engineering in Carlow IT, I wrote a 3D Chess Game with AI in VC++, OpenGL and 3D Studio Max for drawing the pieces.

I am currently writing a 3D Game Engine for my B.sc Software Engineering and I’m thinking about writing a game like command and conquer (with a difference) when I’m finished college…

The first game my brother and I coded was a Space Invaders game on the Camputer Lynx machine, nearly 15 years ago!

I wrote the sprite editor and designed the graphics, the bro programmed the game logic etc. Since it didn’t come with any games, we had no option but to write our own! :P

The good ‘ol days, eh! Kids nowadays and their PS/2s and X-Boxes, they don’t know how easy they get it! ;) We used to have to walk to school with no feet, just to find out that school hadn’t been invented yet!

      You had it easy!

I had to get up in the morning at ten o’clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

With that kind of history of abuse you would be attracted in to game development and all the torture it brings !
