Remember that VC pitch event in Dublin, where companies who took part gave a 3 minute pitch of what they were doing.

Having a similar 45 minutes or so at the event for various companies / individuals to show what they are working on could be a good idea… a pre-requisite could be that they have to have a playable prototype ( for games teams )…. could be interesting for a) new companies to show what they are up to and b) give them a deadline to work to, to get a polished demo of their work up and running.

Any thoughts?

The problem with this is a simple one, who would people show their wares to? It’s the first time that it’s being done here in Ireland, and it’s not as if this country is brimming with publishers in the first place. Maybe something seperate or at a future event where publishers from abroad could be invited to view what’s going on in Ireland might be a more practical idea.

I was more thinking that it would be an opportunity for interested parties to show what they are working on, but as was mentioned…

– it could be tricky to organise… especially with the logistics of last minute entries etc

– what would the people get out of it… if there were publishers there, it would be like a pitch, which will hopefully be the case at future events.

For now, it would simply be a way for interested parties actually seeing what the various companies or individuals are up to, and for people at this first event to get an idea of the state of the industry.

I can see how the pitch idea might be a bit too much for this first up-and-coming event.

I’m really looking forward to this event, hats off to the organisers for taking the time and effort to make it happen!

Thanks for the info, Tony. Glad to see you working hard on this. Keep up the fantastic work. Awakenings will be a day to remember. I’m actually talking with an artist in Belfast about coming up. He’ll be getting his ticket sorted out soon.

The event officially ends at 5pm, but what are people’s plans for the night? Taking the guest speakers out for dinner or something? If nothing is happening then I’ll hope to get a bus back to the capital. The hotels aren’t actually that expensive, but I’m going to France the next week so I need to spend wisely these next few weeks! :)

sounds good. im staying over so im up for finding out what derry nightlife is like.

not able to dance but apparently i do a good imitation after about 5-6 pints of the black stuff (well brown\black stuff, murphys of course, but i guess thats going to be hard to find in derry, considering most of tipp doesnt stock it when i head home every now and then). :)

There is a Travelodge within walking distance from the Tower Hotel and 2 mins from the Conference. Around 35-40Stg for a room. Soulless but comfortable.

Or the City Hotel. Then there’s Da Vincis (which rent out by the room and sleeps 3 or 4, and also rent apartments which could possibly provide shelter for posse of you).

with regards to the lord mayors wine reception on the thursday. Does he mind late comers? Because i dont think ill be there by 7.15, more likely 8.30 or so. or will it be over by then.

Hopefully there will be an chance to mingle with the speakers. I am involved in creating a Academic Awareness Special Interest Group with the IGDA and would love a moment to discuss this personally with Jason. Also to thank him for giving me the opportunity to help the organisation in any way I can, something I’m very happy to do.

I’m still looking into hotels and whatnot. I don’t want to leave it to late but having just booked my ticket to France I’m trying to scrape together the funds for accommodation. :)

Worth noting is that I already have a certain university on our humble little island interested in the special interest group. I’ll be interested in talking with students here to see what their thoughts are on one or two issues.

Its funny in the last 3-4 months I think the academic ring is really watching the games industry and saying “we should get in here on the ground floor”. Ive heard some talk\rumours about other i.t. and universities starting post grad courses.

I presume you know about the academic thing were trying to organise at the conference. Basically anyone who’s interested in the field of games\research they basically meet up and tell each other what their up too. That way everyone knows exactly what sort of stuff is been done.That way hopefully it will provide everyone with a list of contacts for possible collaborations in the future. Also allows people to put names to faces.

A bit late in the day, this, but I have managed to clear the diary for the (momentous) occasion and will be travelling by car from Dublin Friday AM, returning Friday PM (and sleeping all week-end thereafter!).

Not sure about times yet – I have itinerary etc. but have not travelled “extensively” within Ireland yet so am still guesstimating take-off time, but – main point of this post – if anybody needs a lift there on the day, I’ll have either one seat or 3 available (depending which car Mrs ambro25 lets me take), just let me know.

What about the dress code for this wine reception?

Are we going casual or is something a little more professional required?
