InactiveConfirmed speakers:
– Jason Della Rocca (IGDA Program Director)
– Graham Devine (ex-id designer, ex-IGDA chairman, currently a designer with Ensemble)
Two more high profile industry vets are looking very likely but are not yet 100% confirmed.
Unfortunately, Dave Perry has declined as the later date didn’t suit him.
More info in the next 2 – 3 weeks

Inactivethe event continues to generate interest among the island’s various funding bodies too, with both the IDA and EI pledging support. Including Momentum, Derry City Council, NORIBIC and INI – this will a very strong cross-border initiative indeed, readily fulfilling the Ireland chapter’s goal of representing the whole island
tentative talks have already begun concerning Awakenings ’05!

InactiveNo Ronny, I think what was meant is that KyotoKid would like to speak to Nagoshi-San face to face, as you would to Dave Perry.
I imagine a converastion with either would be fascinating.“I don’t get it I dragged myself out of bed”

InactiveFolks,
the event in Derry, which I can now confirm is to be called “Awakenings ’04”, has been put back until Fri 15th October. The decision to put the event back was taken to ensure we attract high-calibre international speakers.
I can’t confirm any speakers as yet. What I can confirm is…
– the format of the event will be a one day conference/seminar on the Friday. The seminar will have 4 speaker sessions, and one round table at the end. There will also be a number of stands/demos available to view throughout the day
– the event will be held at the NWIFHE in Derry City
– places will be limited to 250We’re not sure yet if there will be an entry fee or not, but if there is it will be nominal, with a student discount, etc. The event will of course be free to all IGDA members
It’s hoped that the event, if successful, will become a regular annual fixture and will expand to fill two or even three days. There’s a lot of interest and enthusiasm in the North for attracting and funding games-related events.
I’ll post more info as it breaks, and a dedicated website will be launched for the event

InactiveRemember that VC pitch event in Dublin, where companies who took part gave a 3 minute pitch of what they were doing.
Having a similar 45 minutes or so at the event for various companies / individuals to show what they are working on could be a good idea… a pre-requisite could be that they have to have a playable prototype ( for games teams )…. could be interesting for a) new companies to show what they are up to and b) give them a deadline to work to, to get a polished demo of their work up and running.
Any thoughts?

The problem with this is a simple one, who would people show their wares to? It’s the first time that it’s being done here in Ireland, and it’s not as if this country is brimming with publishers in the first place. Maybe something seperate or at a future event where publishers from abroad could be invited to view what’s going on in Ireland might be a more practical idea.

InactiveI was more thinking that it would be an opportunity for interested parties to show what they are working on, but as was mentioned…
– it could be tricky to organise… especially with the logistics of last minute entries etc
– what would the people get out of it… if there were publishers there, it would be like a pitch, which will hopefully be the case at future events.
For now, it would simply be a way for interested parties actually seeing what the various companies or individuals are up to, and for people at this first event to get an idea of the state of the industry.
I can see how the pitch idea might be a bit too much for this first up-and-coming event.
I’m really looking forward to this event, hats off to the organisers for taking the time and effort to make it happen!

Inactivewe’ve looked at the dosh situation and are prepared to put on a free bus service (return) from Dublin to Derry for the event, if some/any of you are having trouble getting transport up
The catch is I don’t have time to follow up on this, so if someone wants to take on scoping out prices for mini-bus/coach hire for the event, we’ll (Awakenings organisers) cover it – assuming there’s high enough numbers… If there are folks in Belfast interested, perhaps the bus could go via Belfast? (I’ve no idea how far out of the way that is, so don’t shoot me!)
Any takers??
Now you can’t say fairer than that – free transport to Ireland’s first ever game development conference and it’s free too!!

The event officially ends at 5pm, but what are people’s plans for the night? Taking the guest speakers out for dinner or something? If nothing is happening then I’ll hope to get a bus back to the capital. The hotels aren’t actually that expensive, but I’m going to France the next week so I need to spend wisely these next few weeks! :)

InactiveThere is a Travelodge within walking distance from the Tower Hotel and 2 mins from the Conference. Around 35-40Stg for a room. Soulless but comfortable.
Or the City Hotel. Then there’s Da Vincis (which rent out by the room and sleeps 3 or 4, and also rent apartments which could possibly provide shelter for posse of you).

InactiveHopefully there will be an chance to mingle with the speakers. I am involved in creating a Academic Awareness Special Interest Group with the IGDA and would love a moment to discuss this personally with Jason. Also to thank him for giving me the opportunity to help the organisation in any way I can, something I’m very happy to do.
I’m still looking into hotels and whatnot. I don’t want to leave it to late but having just booked my ticket to France I’m trying to scrape together the funds for accommodation. :)
Worth noting is that I already have a certain university on our humble little island interested in the special interest group. I’ll be interested in talking with students here to see what their thoughts are on one or two issues.

InactiveThats good ronny getting the university on the side.
Its funny in the last 3-4 months I think the academic ring is really watching the games industry and saying “we should get in here on the ground floor”. Ive heard some talk\rumours about other i.t. and universities starting post grad courses.
I presume you know about the academic thing were trying to organise at the conference. Basically anyone who’s interested in the field of games\research they basically meet up and tell each other what their up too. That way everyone knows exactly what sort of stuff is been done. That way hopefully it will provide everyone with a list of contacts for possible collaborations in the future. Also allows people to put names to faces.

Glad to see you’re making the trip. I’ve just found out I can’t stay with my friend as he can’t go because of work. How is work nearly as important that Awakenings ’04?? ;) -

InactiveFolks,
an important reminder for those of you planning to attend the wine reception on Thursday (i.e. you got invites!) – You will need to RSVP (address included in invite) in order to secure entry on the night
Derry City Council also need it to estimate the wine, etc. so make sure you reply!

InactiveA bit late in the day, this, but I have managed to clear the diary for the (momentous) occasion and will be travelling by car from Dublin Friday AM, returning Friday PM (and sleeping all week-end thereafter!).
Not sure about times yet – I have itinerary etc. but have not travelled “extensively” within Ireland yet so am still guesstimating take-off time, but – main point of this post – if anybody needs a lift there on the day, I’ll have either one seat or 3 available (depending which car Mrs ambro25 lets me take), just let me know.

InactiveWhat about the dress code for this wine reception?
Are we going casual or is something a little more professional required?
Looking forward to it. See you all there.

just ‘got side-tracked (read: frog-marched) into a European Patent opposition case, reply’s got to be out-the-door before the week-end. So no Awakenings for me this year, lads et ladettes :( .
Sorry Tony, I was really looking fwd to it (even the drive there – honest!)… I’ll have to buy a round at the next Chapter get-together and make amends!
Have fun up there and drink the Council dry!

InactiveJust to say a huge thanks to all who travelled up for the event and to all those who contributed to making it a resounding success – most notably: Apha (doing her Puppet Master thang int he background), Skyclad (who designed and maintained the online bookings system above and beyond the call of duty), Jamemc (for contacts and his sterling work on the educational intitiative), and ian_hannigan (for miscellaneous web magickery)
We had 223 bookings out of a possible 250 – although we only had 170 of them turn up on the day.
The speakers all did a great job, and both Markus Maki and Graeme Devine claimed it was the best organised conference they’d ever been to!! I’ll leave you to imagine Graeme’s face when he was told this was our first such event… Jason Della Rocca who travels all over the world to such events, also thanked all concerned for a very smooth event. This was the first time ever a city Mayor turned up to greet him!
While the conference part was only a day long, there was a predeing day of meetings with various educational and academic bodies and an historic meeting where we had representatives from almost every funder (IDA had to pull out of Thur at the last minute and could only make Fri) on the island in one room, asking: “What does the industry need in Ireland?” Needless to say, they were told at some length! A number of proposals are in various stages of being made and followed up on, so watch this space
There was much press coverage with more still to come in the Irish Times and on SilicanRepublic.com… at least two radio interviews and the BBC tv news!
For those of you who missed it, we’re hoping to put some of the PowerPoints on the site as well as all of the speakers talks in MP3 format…
Thanks once again to all if the IGDA organisers who made it possible – especially Steve Collins and project manager par excellence, Wendy Gibbons who shepherded all concerned with a light touch and a large dollop of aplomb!

I’ve said that at least 2000 times in the last couple of days. Your amusing line is stuck firmly in my head! There’s so many Awakenings threads that I’m not sure if this has been mentioned, but our humble conference has made it up onto the front page of the IGDA site! Link to report and all. :)
