Its clear that the 360 version looks a lot better, I have also been told it runs a few frames faster than the PS3 version. But dont worry I am sure the PS3 fan boys will find some way to twist this.

Right. I’m buying this game tonight purely on my love for Arabic culture. Hopefully it won’t disappoint me as much as Prince of Persia.

In fairness I didn’t really give it much of a chance. At the time I was playing some sort of strategy game (Civ 3 I think) and I didn’t give myself time to adjust to the fast action of PoP. Maybe if I can round up some money I’ll get that too!As for the trailer.. I’ll leave it until I get the game underway.

That comparison vid does too spoil the plot! But its not as if you couldn’t see it coming from the all the gameplay videos anyway. Apples to apples, the 360 really does come out on top in this case

As far as I can tell the only difference between those two is the saturation, which is something they really should have matched up with gamma control. I don’t really trust these comparison videos when it comes to image quality though.

saturation seems to be a common difference between 360 and ps3 games for some reason.
i personally got the ps3 version and have been playing it a lot, thought it was pretty decent. a few bits of popping going on and a frame or 2 dropping out but all in all it seems pretty decent. hope graphics dont get worse as game goes on, as this is quite common these days. test vigorously the first few levels and fix them up and not so much the others.

My favourite part is when you jump down into crowds etc and you see how they react. It’s cool

So here’s my first impressions…
Where are they going with this futuristic angle? Right now I’d much more prefer you just play as Altair and go through his life. i don’t need all of this future malarkey killing my buzz. As for gameplay, it’s a bit above average. I can see the fighting get old really quickly. Watching the crowd wander around is very cool and I would actually say it adds a lot to it.
Obviously the graphics are fantastic, but that’s just the thing. The graphics cover up essentially what is an average game. Maybe I’ll change my mind as I play through it.

Ok, this game is gorgeous.
But, here’s the big but, god damn is it getting repetitive.
It’s basically a great mash up of games I love:
– Crackdown’s freedom and collecting
– Spiderman 2’s freedom and collecting and doing random missions
– GTA like ambiance, immersion and missions
– Tenchu’s stealth
– Shadow of the Collossuss’ boss type format and horse riding
– Zelda’s exploration
– Prince of Persia’s acrobatics and some of it’s combatHowever, it doesn’t do all these things on a par with those games, and i think if it did, what with the setting, premise and ambiance of the whole game it would truly be something special.
e.g, collecting flags doesn’t do anything really, unlike crackdown’s orbs. The methods of collecting information just aren’t diverse enough either. There’s only really 4 ways of collecting info before you head to the local bureau and then putting all the info together to get the best opportunity to take out the dude, although getting all this information doesn’t seem to have any benefits other then being a completionist than getting just the bare minimum amount to continue.
I’m wanting to like it all the time, and don’t get me wrong I love this game and am really enjoying it, and it is really really fun so far, but I just hope they pull it all together with more ways to get information etc etc in the impending sequel.

The console war sucks, everywhere you go there’s fanboys bashing games just because it’s on a different console than they prefer, and you’ve got console manufacturers more bent on getting faster hardware and bashing other console makers than getting decent games out.

I still enjoy Assassin very much, sure I won’t be going back to it once I finish the game but the atmosphere, story and the brilliant graphics are what keep me going.
Crackdown stand out for me because of art direction (style) and jumping around was a great buzz.
To get back on topic COD4 was pretty much identical on 360 and PS3 (not sure of the frame rate, 360 was running at 60 frames) but the difference between the two machines with Assassin Creed is very noticeable and I just wander why. -

People, talent, ability. Also COD4 is built on an existing proven engine, AC was built from the ground up and is a lot more complex games in terms of graphics etc. Also i suspect 360 might have been lead platform.

Since this thread has been steered down the avenue of XBox 360 vs PS3, I have a dev question for anyone here who has been un/fortunate enough to work with both.
Although the PS3 is supposedly a superior machine in hardware to the 360, the legend has it that it is harder and more expensive to develop for because of it’s architecture and other technical such and such, thus making the 360 a preferred platform for many developers to work on.
Does anyone here have any experience of this and is in a position to comment?

I heard people complaining about the PS3 just for the fact that its blue ray disk are more expensive and its finer laser makes loading times longer.
Was PS2 not harder to do in the first place? surely the PS3 would follow.Of course 360 will be easier as its pretty much a microsoft PC….. kind of.

Expensive yes, because dev kits cost a bit more, but this is coming down, generally not a deciding factor though.
As for a preferred plaform i dont know?? this is up for debate and is alot down to developer\publisher and the skills of the people working with the various versions.
I think the problem with poor ps3 titles vs the same title on 360 (AC being the example here in terms of fps\saturation etc) is down to the individual developer making the decision that one is their lead platform instead of choosing to develop both as leads. 360 often being the case as its similar to xbox 1 in terms of libs etc and theres alots of game out (360 launched earlier, produced dev kits quicker\cheaper etc), lessons learned during dev, ppl who have developed 1-2 titles already and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. So its easy to see why 360 is perceived to be easier. Theres as many ppl with ps3 experience, and even less in terms of spu,cell etc. But their catching up fast. I suspect 360 and ps3 games to be on par by this time next year.
What im getting at is that you cant simply port a 360 game to ps3 and expect it to work (example of such can be seen in the common saturation problem, easily fixed but often isnt due to time\effort etc versus port and ship!). These machines are quite similar in terms of what they can do but how you go about doing the same thing on both platforms is often very very different. Only way to code good on multi-platforms is to be aware of these differences and branch the code at these points. I think on SEGA Rally we did a pretty good attempt at this (we had one or two very good coders who really grasped the differences\spu etc), as most ppl\reviewers will say they look pretty much identical on all platforms (but depends on how picky you want to be).
So hope that sort of answers your question.
As for my own personal opinion on which is easier (i dont do much low-level graphics) but from a high level point of view 360 is a bit easier but it does protect you from stuff you might often want to get at, ps3 allows you accomplish this better.

Yeah as much as I’d love to get into an in-depth discussion about this, you’re not going to get much detail in comments about it because of NDAs etc.
I think that the conception of the PS3 being harder to program for is a combination of the tools, the architecture, and the maturity of the console. One of the biggest strengths of the 360, development-wise, is that it’s a Microsoft product – with that comes all their expertise in development tools and documentation. The 360 has been around for that much longer, and people have learned what works and what doesn’t – the PS3 is still playing catchup in that regard. Add on to that the radically different architecture of the PS3 compared to any other multithreaded hardware system and you get a very steep learning curve. It’s natural that it will take a while for titles to take full advantage of the PS3 – when PS3 devkits have been around as long as 360 ones are now, I think it will be a different story.
Comparing statistics is largely irrelevant; each has its own strengths and weaknesses, and what works well for one won’t for the other. I suspect that when it comes to PS3 development, a large part of the problem is that many teams are leading with 360 and leaving PS3 as almost an afterthought, to be optimized at the end. That simply won’t work, and could well be why we’re seeing PS3 versions of games delayed while the 360 version is released. The game engine’s design has to be considered from the start with respect to the PS3’s architecture, which requires a very different approach in order to make good use of its strengths.
At this stage I should probably add that this is all my own opinion, and doesn’t reflect that of Radical :)

Ok maybe am becoming a sony fanboy…You can’t blame me am just sick of the bashing its annoying. Don’t get me wrong I like both consoles they have their high and lows e.g Xbox more ram PS3 CPU power.
People have to undderstand that the only reason that the ps3 is behind is the price and the dev kits. Now that the price of the dev kit has been slashed we should see something new. You have to remember its bearly a years old in EU.
I personally believe it will catch up just give it time. Game business is a BUSINESS developers wants money so they go for the easiest route which is XBOX.

I am sure a lot of you guys know way more about this than me but from what i have head the very little work when into the PS3’s GPU it was more or less a moded standard PC card. But i know from reading Xbox 360 uncloaked that a lot of work went into the 360’s card. But i am not 100% on some of thouse facts. I think the Cell is a VERY VERY powerful processor but the question is; "is it right for games".

Paul, I believe (not from experience) that the Cell processor that the PS3 uses is quite a different architecture to what developers are used to, there’s one "master" processor and 6 (I think) vector processors, and is generally more like a GPU. I can’t comment on about hard it would be to program for, but it would definitely take longer to develop for than the regular processors that programmers are used to.
I’ve also heard that the tools that Sony included weren’t as mature as Microsoft’s one (they do have a bit more experience in programming tools of course). However, a lot more middleware is being developed for the PS3 now, like the Unreal engine which should remove a lot of the implementation details from the game developers and make it easier to develop for.I’ve not developed for either, and this is what I can gather from research and talking to a mate of mine in the industry.

What did it define by getting something running? Box rotating on screen?If thats the case id agree as ms supply with the XDK a set of samples and alot of the basic graphics code is similar to PC directx, so its easy to port over a bit of that. Alot of the functions have similar names also.
Although i wouldnt say ps3 takes more code to get something working, the samples with ps3 are a bit different and seeing as there no ps3 pc equivalent lib like dx and xdk you have to start from scratch (but often this is a good thing).
i would say if you started completely from scratch having no pc code whatsoever, i would estimate both would be about the same length of code, but this is highly dependent on the task at hand. Comparing lines of code from one platform to other is pretty meaningless though

Sorry Peter I can’t think off hand what was specifically being referred to, but I think it was meant in a general way. If i can route out the sites from my browser history I’ll post them up.

Getting everything running well on a PS3…probably.
Because that would involve lots of engine code to write well written multi-processor code. The 360 is less multi-threaded, so in that way, yes it’d be less. But if you’ve got a well written engine, it should be the same, more or less.
