The usability layer on top of MentalRay is welcome, as is the touted stability increases. Not as much feature-wise as the update to Max 8 though

I want to see what the craze is about pro booleans. i never ever use boolean but the architecture pre-viz. people seem to be nuts about it. I hoped they would update the material editor but doesnt look like they did.

I got probooleans on the subscription service, its a very stable and reliable tool. One of its best features IMHO is that it can quadrangulate your mesh after the boolean operations, making it ideal for meshsmoothing or Sub-D work. It also saves your operations in a stack, making it easy to travel up and down it to make changes.

Any particular features you are looking for in the material editor?

a material tree would be nice, kinda like the hierarchy of the materials on your mesh. would also be nice to be able to save pre-set materials that you could transfer to different max files. a general overhaul would be nice! :D flashing lights and whistles :P

is it true that purchasing 3ds max in the states is cheaper than it is to purchase it in europe?

That functionality is already there, in both cases. A lot of people lament the absence of a node based Maya style material editor but I think some lad has written such a thing off his own bat.

You can’t purchase it online from the States, I don’t know if an American reseller would ship it to you from there but you can buy from the UK, and shop around a bit, some of the UK resellers do good bundles, eg. Full price Max with a cut price Brazil renderer and a free years subscription to the Autodesk Subscription Service.

cool! :D pete, do you work for autodesk? come on dont lie. I always thought there was limited functionality in the cameras in max aswell, with alot of advanced work needed to be produced through maxscript. im liking the direct x shader enhancements since max 8 though.

You should check out Brazil if you want extra camera tricks, lots of fisheye lenses and stuff to play about with

yeah have never used brazil before, i hear good things tho. you cant beat vray though. and you can get most effects needed with mental ray.

Wouldn’t be a big fan of Vray. Overly complicated, and tough to get results that can be achieved much quicker in Brazil or Mental Ray.
Mental Ray is an excellent renderer, so glad to hear about even more improvements be added.
