battlefield 2124 – EA and dice – released 2006 – needed it for activation, little panel with ‘internet connection required’ included in the spec on the back. for on-line / multiplayer 128kbps connection required. a pain in the proverbials really but enjoyable game.

Ah yes but thats an online game, well to all intents and purposes anyway. BioShock be single player so its that bit odder…

was there not fierce hatred for steam from gamers?
is that DO NOT WANT factor not what stops most games from needing online activation??

Initially there was but that was more due to the teething problems the service encountered after its inception, which is itself fair enough given it was the first time it had been tried. Things are different now however, I haven’t had any problems with Steam in ages and other peoples problems seem pretty sporadic at this stage. The benefits of the system are undeniable however.
In terms of how Bioshock is doing it, well that remains to be seen. I can see there being problems in the first week as their servers cope with the demand for activation but outside of that I find their decision to go for it in the first place the only odd thing.
