      Hey there guys and girls!
I am looking for some career advice, I’ve just finished college and like everyone else i am looking for a job. I am a 3D Modeller and so far i have found nothing, Is it worth my while trying to get into the games industry in ireland at this time?

There seems to be a surge of programmers but not that many people specializing in modelling so in theory there should be jobs available in my field, maybe i haven’t been looking hard enough or maybe the industry is still too young. The jobs that i did find require you to have 3/ 4 years professional experience and being just out of college you can see the problem :) I have been looking for internships but there doesn’t seem to be much around.

I was also thinking about maybe starting up a small company but that would take a lot of time and money and i wouldn’t really know where to start and it would likely fail due to not having the experience of working in a professional studio environment .

So about my skills, I am primarily a 3d modeller who can program in JavaScript ( Unity ), HTML, PHP and a small bit in C#. I have worked on a few Call of Duty Mods some released, some not. I was very active in the call of duty modding community during 2007 to 2010( Which got me into game development ). The only options i see at this time is free lancing or moving over sea’s, I am currently working on building my portfolio and the website which i will complete over the summer months. I am really at a crossroads here and I would really appreciate any thoughts or advice anyone has to give.

Here is my portfolio, there is a lot more that has to be done with it. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

If you’re a 3D artist, model some more stuff. You’ve models are a bit too generic, so nothing jumps out. Guns, shipping container,a truck chassis.

What are your interests, what do you like modelling? Are you a character artist or environments or props\assets kind of guy? Or ??

Show some range and diversify the models you create.

Are you interested more in the animation side of things? Rigging? Character modeller/ animator

You mention coding skills – cool then maybe technical artist would be your thing. From your portfolio at the mo, I can’t quite get what you want to do. I can gather your down with the whole war/guns thing but other than that…

Having other skills is great (kudos) but if you get employed at a larger company it will most likely want to be as (insert speciality here) 3D artist. Smaller companies of course might need an all rounder…show you can be that guy.

The CoD levels, did you make any of the assets in the screen-shots or did you make the levels? If its the former – point them out or it might be an idea to model some interesting or unique pieces (no cannons\artillery!) and whack them in a level :)

Maybe tone down all the gun\war stuff, personally its a bit off putting but I clearly don’t represent the gaming world.

I look forward to seeing some new shiz!

EDIT: Showing you’re confident with UV mapping/texturing. On the ‘work’ page there is a bunch of untextured assets. I _couldn’t_ hire a 3D artist who doesn’t show me lovely, fully textured models (ideally with the UV’s nicely laid out and some wireframes). Get some shaders on there.

Have you looked an any other 3D artists portfolio work to get a sense of what is out there?

Hi there and thank you very much for replying! I really appreciate your feedback.

So, less guns and more variety. That will be hard as i sort of have a firearm fetish :) I’m pretty much an all rounder when it comes to modelling i can character model, props, weapons etc . The only area i really lack is texturing, I have been working on that a lot lately but i don’t seem to be improving all that much. i have been looking at other peoples portfolio websites (I am still designing mine ) and most people i have come across had firearms or some sort of weapons, characters and props.

I would like to focus on just modelling as i have a hatred for animating, although i can animate i find it rather annoying and unpleasant. as for the cod level i should probably do a break down of the assets i created with BSP brushes and display individually on the site and again i thank you for your feedback and advice! it has helped me a lot!
