Yeah, I’ve heard there are pretty screwed. Don’t expect a Dublin office.

Strange article…they say they operate in Edinburgh and Montreal…but completley ignored the fact there is a Glasgow office!

was talking to a Scottish industry contact day before yesterday… rumours are rife over there about DC, but apparently the whole UK operation is in trouble

It leaves Realtime Worlds as the last big developer in Scotland….it seems to have absorbed staff from all the others that have fallen.

Ya I’ve heard that alright, lets hope the curse doesnt follow to that place too. Although wasn’t Realtime Worlds first game meant to be an xbox 360 launch title (crackdown or APB, can never remember which, i think its the former though).
Also I read somewhere that they were developing with Renderware for a good while but when EA acquired Criterion\Renderware and made it an in house tool, they like so many had to switch to a new engine (Rockstar being another, although their new inhouse engine is looking sweet, written by Rockstar San Diego guys (ppl who made midnight dub etc)). Just look that their Table Tennis game, great animation, great physics, truly a next gen game, although fundamentally its still Pong! :)
In Real Time Worlds case I heard they switched to Unreal 3. Bet that slowed them down to a crawl.

Surely Rockstar are the largest dev in Scotland?
Real Time aren’t that large a studio are they…or weren’t the last time i visited the studio anyway. -

They we’re at 96 in October BEFORE the collapse of Visual Science, VIS and by the looks of things DC.
The Dundee development studio, which has successfully attracted employees from across the globe, currently employs 96 staff and boasts outstanding employee retention since the firm’s inception in 2002. Looking to fill further programming, art and design roles, Real Time Worlds predicts that its current recruitment drive will increase its workforce by more than 30%, taking it to around 130 before the end of the year.

looks like the Scottish Games industry star is somewhat dulled at present..

Think it can probably all be traced back to VIS though. Alot of empty promises if ya ask me.
Another group who shut down and alot of them went to rockstar and real time worlds was a company called Steel Monkeys. Apparently they made similar business mistakes as DC\VIS\Visual Sciences.

it would be interesting to see some sort of analysis of what those mistakes were.

I have a pretty good idea off the top of my head. Smooth talkers who roped in investors with promises of huge pots of money to be made in the games industry. Coupled with poor management. Seems to me alot of game companies are managed by the programmers who first setup the studio, when they were bedroom programmers and were essentially small time. Then when they hit the big time they suddently have to double up as programmers\managers\producers\hr etc. Unfortunately, good programmers dont necessarily make good producers or managers etc. Best leave the coding to the coders and the management\producing to the trained professionals :)
