InactiveJust a thought,
Would it be possible to put a “last post in the forum” link on the front page? Just to quickly see if they’re has been any postings since the user was last here.
If not, don’t worry about it.

InactiveHi All,
Definitely a “last 5 posts” portal on the homepage would drive traffic and add an incentive for contributors. You know the type of posters, the ones that check their top 10 most frequent poster rankings ;) eh Skyclad!!!! ;)Cheers,

InactiveSadly I only need to check the top 2 of the rankings :( I’m still a long way behind Aphra though (but working on it…)

Lynchman, just to let you know, it’s a great idea and we’re working on it – hopefully will have it done in the next week or so.
Thanks

InactiveYeah!, I just had a look back at the date of your original post – didn’t realise is was that long ago! Every suggestion is valuable – it might take a while – but we do try :)

InactiveIt really wants that entire section devoted to itself, not lumped in with all the other stuff. While the articles are good, they dont bring people back to the site on anything like as regular a basis, so having the posts very dominant is probably a good idea.

InactiveDesign #2 is a neater solution for my money.
The times add value by providing that little bit of extra information and help distinguish posts in the case of two having the same name, unlikely but possible. (See my post title) ;)
The links to the other sections are good but could do without e-cards maybe. The horizontal config works better here and uses less space.
I would go for a) instead of b):
a) How you handle your Air…
b) How you handle your Air
shaker…Meaning shortening the maximum characters allowed in the displayed post heading and not allowing the text to wrap.
Great progress though Aphra & co!
Cheers,

InactiveDesign 2 looks cleaner to me too, Design 1 is just a bit cluttered.

Keymasterthanks everyone…this is all very helpful…I think we will deal with the latest posts on the homepage first and then tackle the rearrangement of the forum threads..

Inactiveagree with Ian and others about Design #2 working better… if you keep the forums at the bottom in I think there needs to be some sort of bullet/divider between them for clarity though

InactiveNot sure if this is treading on Johnnyslim’s turf, apologies if I am.
Also, would drop down menus on the front page be better? Would definately make the community section better, and make the page more dynamic at the same time.

InactiveI think that Skyclad has pretty much hit it on the nail with his version. Personally I would go with his over the other two, but if I couldn’t I would certainly choose the second one for reasons that people have already mentioned.

InactiveHi everyone,
First of all, thanks for your suggestions and help, it’s great that everyone’s showing an interest in the site.
SkyClad – your efforts have been noted and I’ve done a new beta version based on elements of your suggestion. The URL is below but here’s what I’ve done…
I like the alternative News panel (bold dates), but the line break between the date and the title pushes articles out of the panel and reduces the number of headlines we can display.
I’ve introduced a limit to the number of characters in a title on the newspanel like you suggested for the forums (great idea!). This facilitates the display of more news titles along with their dates.
The character limit in the forums has been reduced to ensure no linefeeds occur. I’ve switched from TIME indication to DATE indication and I’ve made the date bold. There was some debate about TIMES/DATES i think so tell me what you think.
If you mouse over a link in the forums panel you should get a tooltip thing that tells you the time of the post and who did it (no guarantees in Netscape – yet!)
To add a features panel would be a huge deviation in the design and would mean reworking all the lovely style-sheets Paul made last year – I’m not about to try that!
Anway, thanks again for your interest, here’s the latest beta…

InactiveAs the forums get busier the date on the latest posts is likely to lose any significance as all five will have the same date, most likely today! I think you might be better going with a short form date and time if you can squeeze it in.

InactiveThat’s a sensible point! Dates may not be as useful as times, well worth considering.
BTW what happens if a post does not have a title like this one?
Will it be titled ‘ ‘ or ‘untitled’ or use another form of unique identifier taken from the main body of the message? Not sure if the date or time, needs to be highlighted in bold.
Worms – can – of , comes to mind ;)
