I mentioned this at the GD.ie birthday event, and its been advertised in the latest EDGE, but in case you missed is, we’re starting a new MSc in Interactive Entertainment Technology – i.e. games!

      For details go here: http://isg.cs.tcd.ie/IET/

Closing date for applications is 31st July 2007, for an October 2007 start. We’ll be formally announcing some cool things soon (e.g. XNA Gamelab sponsored by Microsoft and a Scholarship programme).

Feel free to ping me with questions (not PM – I don’t read those often). Contact details available on the site.

I’d really appreciate it if you could pass this to anyone you might think would be interested.

      Steve

      Hi all,

this course is being launched in Trinity today and 6.1 news (yes the tele!) is covering it. I am heading in to be interviewed too as an independent person…so I guess you might see us all tonight on the news…

      Aphra.

Nice. Definately sounds like a better msc than the ones out there. We might have to watch out for a few emerging grads :)

It made it onto the BBC News site. Steve Collins says a few words too.

Just looked at the module list having seen a couple of faces whose names I recognised on the 9 o’clock news. Course looks very interesting and if I wasn’t halfway through my MSc from Abertay I would definitely consider enrolling.

Parts of the course that really caught my eye were the networking module, something Abertay doesn’t do, and the
vision systems and augmented reality module sounds really interesting.

Best of luck with it and if you want an inexperienced programmer who isn’t yet finished his MSc to lecture feel free to give me a shout.

I’ve decided to apply for it.

Chances are I won’t be able to go back to Sussex next year for medical reasons so I’ve decided to try my luck!

Although if I’d known 4 years of transcripts were required, I’d have studied a bit harder in 1st year 2nd year, 3rd year and 4th year

Well done Aphra you added balance to the piece, no point sugar coating it. I also think applications meeting the basic requirements will well outstrip the 25 places but tcd will need to be very picky to avoid overwhelming students who don’t already have game programming experience.

I would hope that the 25 be superb programmers firstly(maths etc is secondary really, as speaking as a games programmer, maths isnt the most important thing as you use it from time to time but not always). Ideally, that in the 4 years of their course they demonstrated they were shit hot coders in whatever language they used at uni. They dont necessarily have to have a background in c\c++ but they have proven that they can code good, efficent use of data structures etc and use of api’s etc. I would also suspect that these 25 would have acheived 1.1 throughout uni, as if its just the 2.1h requirement from your degree you’ll have half the bloody countries CS students applicable..

SRS I’m sure will be keeping an eye on ye :P

It was a fair piece. I was concerned at the start as it looked as if they were reporting a room of students playing games all year, but Steve and Aphra gave it a professional perspective.

I’ve decided to apply for it. [/quote:19099cd772]
Good luck, Anthony. Let us know how it goes!

Saw the piece in EDGE last month, but this was quite a surprise.
Good piece, thought exactly as Ronny did for a few seconds, but good work guys.
      Rent in Dublin though…

The MSc. is also featured in this mornings Irish Independent, ironically enough surrounded by a feature on the decreasing number of high level Leaving Cert preformers applying for computing degrees. :)

Just got the phone call asking me to come to an interview!

Unfortunately, my f*cking Crohn’s has spread in the last 3 weeks so I wouldn’t be well enough to start in October – orders from El Doctorino.

      Sucks big giant sumo ass:(

So I had to turned the offer down, rather than waste their time.

Ah well, still cool to be considered for an interview in the first place.

      That is a shame Anthony.
Could you not have requested a telephone interview (Trinity have to take account of special circumstances) and then if you get selected just defer a year and assess again then?

I had thought of that but it’s a bit more awkward, and not wanting to go into it in details, I’d been pretty sick lately so the Trinity thing was the far from my mind.

Plus I’d go mental having to defer more college time due to illness – _IF_, obviously, the interview had been successful. I’ve already deferred an MSc I started last October, so there is that to fall back on and the Doc reckons that’s the better option – Trinity would’ve been a sweeter option though.

Ah well, it’s not the end of the world :)

I found this course just before the closing date (before the extension) and hastily sent in my application.

from reading the site and the positive feedback it seems to be getting here im really glad i got my application in on time.

My interview is coming up in just over a week now so its time to brush up on what ive learned.
i see that you had applied but cant go anthony which is a real shame since you got the interview. Is anyone else on the boards here heading up to the interview ?

id love to speak to anyone else who is. im having real trouble deciding on the modules id like to take. My first definite is the data Comms & networks, but after that its a hard choice to narrow it down. while maybe not the most usefull of the bunch(for pc development anyway) Vision Systems and Augmented Reality sounds pretty cool…

choices choices choices… and ive only made it to the interview :)

Good luck to anyone else who is heading up, i might see you on the day.

I’d have gone for the AI (because that’s my primary area of interest) and the Data Comms modules for definite, and maybe the Real Time Animation & Physics (purely because it seems the more interesting of what remains) module.

The very best of luck with your interview SteveCav!
