Hrm, just noticed this. Its still being compiled at the moment.
Been looking over it for awhile. Now while I can’t fault the quality of some of the titles, the order they appear in the chart is something I don’t agree with. It should be interesting to see the Top 10, hopefully it’ll be a little bit more unbiased and idiotic than the Readers Top 10!

the readers was not too, bad, i was expecting fifa or some crap… Ratchet and Clank was the most out of place game there

What about the 5 or so Madden games? Or the fact that GTA:SA was in the Top 10 games OF ALL TIME?? :?
Gods Of War is great but again, not in the Top 10 games EVER, same goes for MGS3, SP:CT and RE4. The problem with those polls is that they’re stuck “in the now” with people voting for the latest and greatest, forgetting the games that were released previously that defined the genres in the first place…

well what did u expect, it was all recent games, but aleast they were good games! were there many madden games? i think my mind has started to block such things out.
only thing is where is sonic? it was like 58 on the ign list! Sonic 2 is a great game… it better be in the top 30 or so

wave race 64 better than doom? dunno about that one.
I suspect 1 2 and 3 are halo2, halo and gta:sa at least there gonna be the top 5. Resident evil 1 should feature also in top 20.
also mgs3 being in top 10 of the reader is a wrong. game looked great, but short, hence lame..
-
27/07/2005 at 2:51 pm #23454AnonymousInactive
yea, they’re all great games, just put in the wrong order. :D
Oh and careful with the assumption that short games are lame, Max Payne anyone?

These polls are always products of their times
However, I happen to agree that God of War and RE4 should be in the Top 10! They’d definitely be in mine

Aye, its just abit frustating thats all…what was that quote again, ah yes..
“The internet would be wonderful if it wasnt for all the people on it” :lol:Really? Do you not think the original RE should be in there instead of it? Then again the Top 10 is extremely subjective, if someone doesnt like FPS’ then they wouldnt want something like Half-Life or Doom near it, however good they may be. However when you get editors or at least reviewers that specialise in difference genres doing these kind of charts you *usually* get a more balanced opinion…

i reckon zelda ocarina of time is in the top 10 juding by the comment beside the zelda link to the past post.

Ocarina of Time has consistently(always) been no 1 since its release in most of these lists.
Don’t see why it should change now seeing as there hasn’t been a game to better it yet.

I don’t think I’ve played a game in my life that I found better than GTA:SA. It has a brilliant storyline and so much freedom, if I was picking the best game I’ve ever played, it or FF7 would get it, I see what everyone’s saying about the titles which made the genre, but newer titles shouldn’t just be disregarded. I think playing Doom for the first time was something amazing, but so was GTA:SA, even though its more recent.
PS if your an American football fan, some of the Madden games could have seemed pretty special to you too.

definately ff7 or ff8 would be my favourites. 7 was a legendary game. first game i played that looked great, sounded great and had a story of epic proportion.

Top 10 is out…Click
Can’t really fault it although I would have liked to have seen one FPS in there. Starcraft, although I loved it, also looks odd in the Top 10 but… *shrug* theres never going to be total agreement on things like this.
With respect to my Madden comment, I really meant it was strange (crazy) having multiple titles which are essentially the same game with updated stats and graphics. Having one in there is no harm since it is a really good game if your familiar with the sport…

i started play Starcraft a couple of months ago, its a good/great game, but i thought that 7th best game every is a bit much
but super Mario Bros best game ever? i think nostalgia has got the better of them there.
but still, i would find it hard to tell u what the best game ever is…if u asked

Best game ever? Who can tell? Who has actually played them all, after all? Tomb Raider was one of the best games I ever played (gasp) even though the sequels were crap and the hype killed all credibility. And yet, was that because it was actually good, or was it because it was the first decent PS game I played after winning my console in a pub quiz?
So its all totally subjective, right? Which begs the question, what is the point of running such a poll? Apart from giving people like us something to talk about.
But in the spirit of these lists (i.e. everyone has at least two choices that dont appear and require them to defend) – where was Space Hulk?
That was a tight-assed game, so traditionally shock-filled and tough to beat that it rivalled any of the Doom’s.
Also, Spaceman Spiff. Top notch!

your right it is subjective, u think tomb raider is one of the best games ever… while i hated it :?
what i like about such list is that its a good guide to old good games that u might not have tried but now u know are good u might pick up (like Grim Fandango and starcraft which i pick up a couple of months a go)
heres a question for u out of that top 100 how many have u played?
edit: i count about 40 for myself

hows that saying go “opinions are like arseholes….”
80 games played for me, sure I don’t agree with the order but I’d be completely stunned if they could read my mind and match a top 100 to it. I think I can say that the 80 games I played well deserve to be up there, and was chuffed to see Return Fire showing its face in there too regardless of positioning.
Anyways I don’t agree with ranking all games amongst themselves, in my head theres purely – cash-in bad games, bad games that had potential, fun cash-in games, good games, really good games, and “how can you not of played _____” games.
But like I said, thems just my 2 cents…

The thing with most of the readers games being recent probably warks better in games industry than in other top 100s cause as wee move along the games are becoming better and more involved. For an old game to hold a spot it has to be truly special and in that list i can say many really were, i always loved the old lucasarts point and click adventures.
also i would definatly agree with Mario Bros being high, maybe not number one, cause it really hasn’t changed much at all and everyone could play it straight off. it was fun and thats what you wanted. Also it managed to sell well recently when part of the NES classic range on the game boy. that really isn’t bad going

I think in the readers top 100, there are so many newer titles is because of the amount of younger demographic, who started with a playstation say. I know me or my friends are far beyond emailing a website telling why x,y, and z are the greatest and so teh poll get skewed.
