Hi all,
Just wondering about this as its something the company I work for is involved in. I’ve done a couple of Gaming QA roles and I’ve never seen external agents or QA outsourced. I was just wondering if anyone has seen this happen in the industry or is QA still kept tightly under wraps in Ireland?
Do you think there is potential for this as a possible niche in business?

Don’t think I am revealing anything as they are in the game credits but Playfirst use an external QA company. And the QA company is in a different country. (Download games to find out company name if you like :) )

Most dev studios will only maintain an internal QA team big enough for basic functionality testing.
Publisher QA resources typically become available closer to release and may include outsourcing as well.
Its pretty common and afaik has been the case for every game I’ve worked on. If you’re looking for names of companies just check the credits of any AAA release.

I have seen external QA hired in the past in a couple of companies I worked for here. There is (or at least ‘was’)a good Irish company specialising in that very thing. Generally they provided QA people who had foreign language skills for testing localised versions of games.

I suppose since, for the larger companies anyway, localisation QA is the main reason for being based in Ireland so functional QA might have a bit of difficulty competing…

Generally, companies of a certain size, will have a smaller internal QA team. As the project progresses, you have 2 choices, either increase the internal QA size, usually with short term contracts, or my employing external teams. Then the addition of publisher QA towards the end wraps up the QA cycle.
