If you are working in games \ plan to work in the industry, do you see yourself working at an Irish developer (existing or yet to exist) within the next 3 years?

In three years I’ll have left university. I’d consider working for an Irish company, but more likely I’ll follow the route of most and move over to England.

Well I have a year left here in DCU then (fingers crossed) a year in Abertay and then…well who knows. I had thought you might learn more working for a company in the UK than over here but after my time in Instinct that opinion had to be reevaluated. In the next two years though who knows what could happen in terms of the industry over here so in light of that I’m going to go back to my seat on the fence. :)

I’m doing research, unfortunately not directly game related but of somewhat use to developers(Release Planning). At least 2 years of that and possibly go on further to a Ph. D.

Unlikely 2 years we’ll see a games company in Ireland hiring many people, unfortuantely. Unless a publisher decides to move a base there.

For example: aren’t the Instinct-Tech games studio spin-off advertising for people at the moment – not to mention Demonware & PopCap?

I’d agree with Peter. I reckon that any that do set up won’t have as competitive a salary as the Uk either.
Can’t see my self back in ireland in the next 3 years…probably not even 10 unless I get out of games…

I’m referring to actual game development studios, not middlware technology. Because essential demoware\havok etc dont develop the games, they make the tech which facilitate the games. As for Instinct, I was under the illusion they had shifted their focus towards developing game engine tech and had moved away from the developing titles idea. However, im basing this observation purely on my interpretation of interviews in develop\web etc and lack of game title announcements. Although if a game studio did setup back home with competitve salaries (in terms of uk sterling), id definately consider.
Also i reckon omens right in terms of salaries, anything which would setup in the next year or two prob wouldnt have the same salary scale unless they had back of a major player.

Chances are you’d also find lots of people will to work there, being one of very few companies in the country, so chances are salary will be low, unless you were hired as one of the seniors there.

Well I guess this is my informal update.
As ya all may or may not know I came back here to Canada to see if I could get a job in the industry, with my brand spankin new demo reel to show the world. Lots of my alumni mates managed to get positions, give or take, so I figured I’ve have a bit better luck with referrals than last time. That was in March-April-ish, I knocked on everydoor, printed up tonnes of dvd reels, went to all sorts of jobs fair, shuck hands, was all smiles, HR people seemed impressed that I knew people who worked for them and that I relocated from Ireland to work for them. And then….nothing, nothing, and more nothing.
So I needed ot pay rent and applied to an airline called WestJet, they’re sorta like Ryanair as in relatively cheap flights, but they pride themselves on good customer service.
5 months on and I am enjoying myself alot, feels far more stable than any sort of games job could. My buddy who landed his dream job at Radical was let go when his contract expired and is “willing to relocate” all over again, and my other buddy is kinda getting sick of his 3rd year doing QA for EA. Meanwhile I am loving being able to finally play games again and watch movies without feeling guilty about not workin on a demo reel, and /or re-introducing myself to HR person after HR person, and being told that they might have an opening in 3 months time.
So its hard to say I’ll never work in games, I’m still a huge fan of game design, following all the news etc and still thinking how they could make it all better. But the industry is just so unstable and hit driven at the moment, that it does not make sense to keep hitting my head against the wall trying to get in, when actually all I’m giving up is a head ache.

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned it a few times at this stage but I think it’s really important: I think job satisfaction is a lot more about who you work with and less about what you do. If you have a bunch of people that you dont get on well with then no matter how much you enjoy doing what you do at work, it’s still going to be tough to get up each day and go into work.
If on the other hand you dont find what you do particularly exciting, but you get on well with the people and feel like you are making a valuable contribution, the type of work becomes far less an issue and the job far more survivable.
Sure, great people and making games would be great, but a games company doesnt guarantee that you will enjoy the job.
