If you have an idea of what area of games you wish to get into you could look for other companies that also exercise those skills.
Architects for 3D modelling, graphic designers, sound studios etc. you’re unlikely to get any experience in a games design capacity

k, ill consider those, but its not like im a total noob when it comes to computers…
i know its completly off topic but im also considering something in the medical field and something in the political field…

I reckon nifty’s right, cos chances are you’re not going to get into one of the few game dev companies in ireland. If its coding you’re interested in, there’s thousands of those companies in dublin.

are they all the game development companies there are?[/quote:00df54c472]there are a couple of incubator companies up North in Derry, as well as Frantic Games in Athlone who got some kind of funding to round out dev on the large scale mod/tc they were doing
Apart from that there’s a games localisation company in Dublin as well as Microssft and Vivendi of course… and that’s your lot!

I was under the impression the work being done up at Frantic was a standalone title using the Reality Engine…. and the work using the Source engine was a form of prototype. I could be completely wrong on this though, which probably wouldnt shock anyone

so basically?

I think omen and nifty have hit the nail on the head really. The chances of getting into a game dev company in Dublin are slim to none so if I were you I’d concentrate on finding a position that may get you your hands dirty in some coding.
As a matter of interest what area of game design are you interested in. And I suppose the most obvious question is what kind of experience do you have in programming at all?
-
14/07/2006 at 3:37 pm #32591AnonymousInactive
no experience in programming at all, but we all gotta start somewhere right? The area i’d be looking for is PC Gaming, Preferably Online. It’s not like i’d be looking for a project of my own are stuff like that, all i’d be wanting to do is take a look at how to do it and learn from the experts. And even fetch their coffee…

I realise this won’t help your situation regards having to do work experience for school purposes, but I think at your age your best hope for some level of games development expereince might be betatesting.
take a look at NCSoft and see if they have anything going, they do pretty large test runs. I’m sure other people can point you to other likely candidates.

k thank nifty, anybody got some other advice?

While its not directly related to your job hunting I think you should sit down this summer and learn to program, Java being you’re best starting point. That way when you go into TY you’ll have something added to your skillset, trust me starting now will benefit you no end. :)

-
14/07/2006 at 10:30 pm #32603AnonymousInactive
Heh, yes indeedy you do unfortunately. I noticed you signed up to our LAN alright. :D
Basically its a Society here in DCU where we come together and have regular console and PC Gaming sessions. We’ve also started running our BYOPC LAN events, the 5th of which you saw advertised on the site.

yep however i cnt pick a seat, image related error i believe
-
14/07/2006 at 10:44 pm #32605AnonymousInactive
Yes, due to demand we decided to increase the numbers we’re admitting so we had to scrap our original seating plan and go back to the drawing board. With the reams of CAT5 that are going to be dangling around the place its not as simple as just plonking down a few tables and setting our rigs up unfortunately. :?

14/07/2006 at 10:53 pm #32608AnonymousInactive
Sorry man, as I said, this one is for DCU students and indeed Games Soc members only. We’ll be running a public LAN during the year, our largest to date in fact, details of which will be announced towards the end of the year. If you’re not already on Boards.ie sign up there and keep on eye on the LAN Parties forum for more announcments. You’ll also find info on other LANs happening around the country. :)

no worries about the LAN thing, but bare in mind im allways here if u need someone to act as a seat filler!!!

Yup, beta-testing is your only shot really. Although getting any experience in any computer related job is always useful. Don’t expect much when you’re only able to give one day a week to the job.
