For a game that uses so many cut scenes I dont see how it can be marked up much higher, its a step back IMO.

InactivePersonally, cant wait for MGS. Really enjoyed MGS 3, although might have been a bit easy and finished in pretty quickly. But what other game makes you feel like your in a hollywood blockbuster!

InactiveI think its great that games try to match the production values of a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, MGS has pulled this off in each successive game at least since Metal Gear Solid on the PSone

InactiveCouldn’t agree more. Although I haven’t played MGS2 or 3 (solely down to never owning a PS2) the scene from the original MGS with Sniper Wolf is still, hands down, my favorite cut scene ever. The direction, the script and the music are just top notch so hopefully the rest of the series and indeed successive games trying a similar formula, can follow suit.

InactiveI feel completely the same with you there gizmo, that is one of my favorite scenes, have had it favorited in youtube for so long.
Also, the end song for MGS1, ‘The Best is Yet To Come’ is probably my favorite Irish song, one of the few folk songs I’d often listen to. -

InactiveI think MGS3 was one of the last games that I finished which I did so because I wanted to (Bioshock, GTA4, HALO 3, Assasins Creed and other recent efforts seemed more like a chore than a desire to finish).
For anyone who has missed them, Game Trailers have some very cool retrospectives up on the MGS Series, should refresh the stories for some.

InactiveMGS3 was a load of arse (so tongue in cheek it was totally un-enjoyable) and the Portable ops games are worse (CQC broke the perfect Metal gear gameplay).
Is europe getting any special edition MGS4 PS3 packs?

Where did you pre-order it? I was under {the hopefully false} impression that Play.com were only selling it {and they only sold it to British addresses } :( }. -

Oh they do, I’ve ordered from them many times.
It was just the LE of MGS4 they weren’t shipping to any non-UK address. -

InactiveRonan, you should listen to this weeks GFW Radio from the 1up Network.
I think they have the discussion you’re looking for.On the point of reviews I’ve felt that after GTA, and other similar hyped games, reviews have come to a empass and there needs to be a discussion of where game reviews are headed. I’m not sure I care for a score anylonger, and prefer to just read the text of the review.
Frankly Jeremy Parish’s review of MGS4 is one that I empathise with. I have always loved Metal Gear & Kojima, it is my favorite series, but that doesn’t make me oblivious to its faults, and it has many {if anything some portions of the game have an un-canny valley mix of good & bad}.Now off for some last minute revision of Applied Maths and after the exam play through MGS4 on Boss Hard.
Edit: Lol, you recommended GFW in your edit which wasn’t there when was I replying. Nice.

InactiveI think that’s part of my problem, I have been listening too almost every podcast for a bit too long. The hype machine that builds up with all of these people is just getting to the point where they may as well be paid by the marketting teams.
Mario Galaxy, Portal, Bioshock, Crysis, COD4, MGS4, GTA4 and countless other games have simply been "Meh!!".
I’m not doubting the games are great and enjoyable, what I am doubting is the way that the press in particular are hyping up such titles and feel more inclined to tell the Gamer what to buy because they like it, rather than tell the Gamer what to buy based on the games Merits.
I probably should create another thread about this because I really don’t want to derail the MGS4 thread.

InactiveBeen playing MGS4 for the past few days in the office, here.
It looks great.
The AI is smart.
There is some hefty cut-scenes / interrupts, but that is part and parcel of Kojima’s thing.
You can shoot on the ground. This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while. So you can be knocked to the ground, land on your back, and still aim and shoot, without having to get up. Its cool.
Will have more comments as I get more time to play it.

InactivePete, your logic makes no sense. Ever rent a car? ;) Places used to rent consoles like the PS2 when that was expensive. And PS3’s are only 400 quid these days ;) As long as they take a credit card number as collatoral then there should be little risk for them…

Yeah, I was editing as you were posting. Listening to GFW over the past few weeks it would appear they were getting a little annoyed with how some people went about reviews.
I also loved their feature on Critical Analysis (hence why I was beating that drum), but the masses wanted a score slapped on it which negates the reason for Critical Analysis.
Finished MGS4 again, this time without using a more stealthy approach. It has some very very polished mechanics that do wonders for the experience. Although I am a bit undecided as to whether or not I like the constant interuptions (narrative / loading) where it takes you out of the experience and then throws you straight back in. (Skipping is a Godsend for multiple play throughs)

InactiveYeah, I’m on my 2nd playthrough (Boss Hard).
At first I wanted to get through it epicly fast, skipping cutscenes, zero alerts, zero kills and zero continues.
It seems I’ll get zero kills and zero continues, but that very first area before you get the tranquiliser & Solid eye made my attempts to get zero alerts very frustrating and for now impossible. -

InactiveI’m probably going to sell my elite and GTAIV just to get this and a PS3…I can’t wait any longer :D And there is nothing coming out for the 360 for ages, whereas the good version (PS3) of Soul Calibur IV comes out in August!

Same about going back to 360. I’ve been playing on & off games of MGO, but completely back into my 360.
Soul Calibur has 3 Star Wars characters joining. Yoda on the 360, Vader on the PS3, Apprentice on both. Both Yoda and Vader are highly rumoured to become DLC for either platform, but frankly when a series sinks this low, the sharks begin to circle. I loved SC1 } 2 ….
I’ll be picking up Street Fighter 4, thank you very much. -

Numerous things. Controller for one. Also Vader is better than the crap ILM digi-Yoda (I’m a fan of the original, senile is always funny). Also vader isn’t 2 feet high so he won’t break the game. I can only imagine the horror of playing online with everyone using a zippy jumpy yoda against you :x
And the cover is nicer…not that that matters :)

Link from Zelda on gamecube version.
Spawn (from comic of same name) on Xbox version.
Heihachi Mishima from Tekken on Playstation 2 version.
