For some time I’ve been pondering a sidestep into the Games industry.

Generally, I see web and games and sibling industries with much (and increasing) overlap. I’ve thought previously of moving into the concept art field (which I have some experience) this would mean abandoning much of the expertise I’ve accumulated in the last 10+ years of web / UI / UX. However, what are my prospects of moving to game UI design? That would seem to be the most logical thing to do to retain a similar salary. I’m working on portfolio pieces for some fictitious games, both interface design and concept art, to this end.

I seems many game UIs are made in something called Scaleform, but I find tutorials thin on the ground. Is this based on C++? What other prerequisites are there? Is moving to developing on iOS a better move, seeing as I have already designed some Apps? Is there anyone with gaming industry experience that can offer any advice?

Scaleform is an embeddable Flash player geared towards game user interfaces; it’s integrated with the freely available Unreal (Engine) Developer Kit: http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/Scaleform.html

It’s not my area, but at a guess I’d say you’ll find plenty of online Scaleform tutorial material in the context of UDK (on youtube and through google searches or browsing the UDN site linked above). From what I gather, you will need some sort of Flash authoring tool to build content for it.
