I recently signed a petition for a new battletoads game as I could see there was potential in a comeback especially seeing as how the ninja turtles made a comeback in 2003 so why not?
Anyway, it got me thinking and I was wondering who would you most like to see ‘coming out of retirement’? Bubsy, Earthworm Jim, Aero The Acrobat, anyone at all. Personally, I’d love it if Earthworm Jim made a comeback eitheir in game form or on the telly.
Or would you most like to see a spin-off a popular series? I think Sega should try it again with Knuckles ’cause even though Chaotix failed theres still potential for the character to go solo. Think about it!

Duke Nukem Forever…. I’d like to see it before old age sets in.

Well seeing that a new Battletoads would be a third person combat/platformer I’d have to say no on this one. Now while I’d love if they did a good job of it, realisticly I could almost guarentee the words “terrible camera”, “repetive gameplay”, “mediocre graphics” and “frustrating controls” would appear in any review for the game.
Case in point Earthworm Jim’s last 3D outing, all of the above were featured freqently. The Turtles games, hell I’m not even going to talk about them, lets just say “repetitive” isnt just mentioned, its stamped all over the place. Basically I think we should let those old guys stay in nostalgia land where we all have fond memories of them until some developer gives them the proper attention they deserve…

damn gizmo, are you always so down and defeatist?

Stick on the boards a little longer matey and you’ll see far greater defeatist attitudes than old Giz, hell he’s positively upbeat compared to others
On this matter I’d have to agree, some games dont translate well to 3D….unless of course they go the Alien Hominid/Viewtiful Joe route and stick to their 2D routes

Heh, me being called defeatist? Well theres a first for everything I guess! :D
Honestly those comments just stemmed from me being so utterly unimpressed with some of the remakes over the years that I have become quite against companies hoping to make a quick buck out of them. You could of course just do what I do and pretend newer games that turnout brilliant are remakes of your old favourites, case in point Ninja Gaiden = Shinobi! :D
…then again I do live in my own little world sometime so the less leaves taken out of the little book that is my head the better really…

I wasn’t thinking 3D, I was thinking 2D or even 2.5D. Anyway, I’d read that in 2004 a Rare exec thought it would be really cool for a battletoads game to be on gba, sounds like a good idea.
All this though is beside the point of what I asked, I asked what character would you most like to return not what do you think of a new battletoads game… focus, people!!

Ah, well if it wasnt going to be 3D then it wouldnt be so bad then, especially if it was on one of the handhelds or something..
A remake of Battletoads In Battlemanics would be cool, loved that game at the time. Outside of those guys eh – Earthworm Jim, Double Dragon, Phantom 2040 and although not a character per say Contra / Super Probotector. All of them featured on the SNES and were all brilliant! :D

Interestingly Ubisoft has acquired the rights to produce games based upon an up and coming CG feature length film of the Turtles… maybe we will see the franchise offer a little more in terms of gaming

Really? I thought you hated remakes… when the GBA came out, I was hoping for a Super Mario World 3. Anyway an interesting thought crossed my mind… if I became a well established designer with my own company, I’d try to purchase the rights to the characters as well expressing an interest to Epic Games about developing and publishing Jazz Jackrabbit 3.
Hair-brained, isn’t it?

Well see when some says “remake” to me in the context of an old console platformer I immediately think of a half assed 3D conversion, it may be a bit unfair but its held true in most cases so far. Hence if it was a 2D conversion or as lk_ mentioned, like Viewtiful Joe, and of a similar quality then I would be all for it…
Think of that episode in South Park when George Lucas and Steven Spielberg keep releasing all the updated versions of their old films and you’ll get me… :D

Speaking of remakes, apparently Pac-Man, yes Pac-Man is getting an update to Pac-Man 3D.

Pac-Man has actually had a several 3D incarnations already in the form of the Pac-Man World series on the PS/PS2 all of which are “good” in terms of their reviews. However each of them have suffered from the problems I listed above. I guess Pac-Man isnt the best remake to judge the others on though… :D

Weird, ain’t it but I think playing battletoads on the mega drive has rekindled my interest in game design having been previously disillusioned with the idea because of the string of rubbish games that has come out.
-
15/01/2006 at 4:13 pm #28841AnonymousInactive
Just look at rubbish games and think what would improve them…. since I’ve gotten really interested in game development I have to say I don’t enjoy games half as much. I’m more interested in how things are done and why they’ve been done in that way…. I suppose the more you know the more of the magic that is taken away. Kind of like knowing how special effects are done in movies

Really? Hrm, well the opposite can be said for good implementation of features I assume?
I can only take the guitar as my example however. The better I got at theory and playing in general the more I could pick out the flaws in music and peoples playing however when I was faced with a really good piece of music/playing I was able to appreciate it much better.

Afraid so….but then thats me and you all know I’m a little odd
Yes you’d be right about enjoying well developed titles.. pity we dont see them as much as we should.

Can you tell me if you’ve gotta be a brilliant artist to make games ’cause I can draw but all my drawings look like a 6 year old did ’em. One more thing, could you hire an artist to develop and improve your drawings, please give me a buzz!!

Idea for a game:
Battletoads 1942
The toads reverse the polarity of an Evil Time Traveller’s time machine and find themselves hurled backwards through time to WW2. Once there, they side with the Nazis, causing huge Allied casualties by tricking them into licking their poisonous scaly backs and leaping on their heads. I know the head jumping thing has been done before but oldies are goodies.
Any takers?
Uwe Boll are you listening?
