Out of curiosity Peter, is there any non-car on car physics in the game, anything interactable other than the cars? I’ve just not seen anything in any of the videos?

"Sega Rally isn’t just a nostalgic remake, but a genuinely revolutionary twist that takes arcade racing in a new direction."

"Not since Burnout 2 has a driving game stood out as so completely different to everything else, and provided so much instant, moreish entertainment to such a high technical standard."

      Played the Demo…

It seems to be a fun, simple and arcadey racing game. I love sliding around corners.

I don’t like the behind the car views, the car seems to pivot in the centre and it messed with my head making me miss time corners. However if you play in-car view this is not a problem.

Graphically it seems bright, cheery but a bit lacking in detail.

Deformation; doesn’t seem to affect my racing too much. Rumbles alot though

I didn’t finish last (like I usually do in racing games) so I like the AI !

I might need to buy this on the 360

    • #38589

Well the key to the deformation was to not make it effect your driving too much, as this would be annoying. What you will notice in the full version is that over time you’ll find how to use it to your advantage. dig down to better surfaces and get increased traction, very obvious on alpine and arctic environment. Mess the track up forcing ppl to stick to certain areas. Remember there’s two variants, off road and road. These make a big difference to how you drive and how you should chose what to drive over.

As for the AI it ramps up alot in the championship especially towards the end. they’re really hard and they punish you, but they dont cheat (yes you heard me SR ai doesnt cheat honestly..).

I think the in car view or bonnet camera is the best as the behind view gives you a false impression. Definately, with a wheel, bonnet is the only way.

      Total Video Games 9/10

      http://www.totalvideogames.com/articles/Sega_Rally_12130.htm

"Very rarely does a developer remake an iconic classic as well as Sega Racing Studio has Sega Rally. With the finest eye for detail, they’ve managed to remember everything that made the series great and translate it onto today’s next gen machines perfectly. Not only that, but they’ve put their own unique stamp on the Sega Rally family with great aplomb"

Looks like SEGA Rally and Motorstorm are up for BAFTA’s.

SEGA Rally in the Gameplay category.
Motorstorm in the Technical achievement and Sports categories.

Although I reckoned we should have been in their too for Tech. Fully deformable mesh, anyone, not just a fancy effect? But ah sure, the nomination is good.

Edge seemed to give you quiet a good review…shame about last paragraph though, competing against PGR4’s release isn’t good.

      Did see the edge review.

Although I have noticed in the Edge some reviews totally slate a game and give it a great mark, conversely, some reviews totally play a game up and give it a lame mark. Almost as if the mark is given by an entirely different person who didnt play the game or read the review. Strange.

      Yeah, but a 7 (was a 7 wasn’t it?) is quiet good.
Being is in the same release window as PGR4 (edge gave it 9) and Halo3 (edge gave it 10), thats gotta hurt :( Suprised marketing didn’t do better with that.

True but PGR had 4 interations to get theres down. But hey no matter how good your game is the hype of halo will always win out. But once that hype dies we’ll see. Reckon the real winner for SR will be online. As for marketing, what you can sway points?? :P

Exactly, you dont change a winning formula, you build upon it. Thats what we set out to do with SR, and hopefully achieved.

I wouldn’t give that much thought to it to be honest. 7 is pretty decent. Yards better than the mark Lair got across the page, after the scathing slap across the wrists the developers got for making a game that just doesn’t work :D

Motorstorm or any game which lays down textures which creates the effect of the track deform? Ye used parallax mapping to simulate deformation which doesnt effect the handling one bit.

    • #38808

The deformation in MotorStorm does affect handling…so erm…yeah.

I think we were trying to get a lot of vehicles onscreen bashing each other around and having an exciting race

Come on? You cant say that and keep a straight face Ivan. Ye’re guys have even admitted it on several ocassions. Grant there is no way ye’d get the amount of cars in ms on screen if ye simulated terrain deform like we did and keep 30 frames, hence rally has fewer cars.

Quote from one source, i got loads man :).

SEGA Rally Revo for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 will feature tracks that deform throughout the course of a race, Sega announced in a press release today. The deformed surfaces will have an actual effect on the gameplay, as torn-up tracks will become more difficult to drive on. This differs from the purely-aesthetic deformation in Motorstorm, despite any early promises Sony might have made.

Obviously I am not going to get into it, but as I say deformation in MotorStorm does affect handling.

Just played the SR demo there. Had to play without sound but thought game was great.
Very arcade feel, easy to control. Played with subaru : car seemed quite light (low mass) – never driven a rally car mind you and I know they are lighter than the normal production cars but I wanted to fight with it a little more to get it to turn. Then again I may just be a natural talent :)
