      Hi all,

I have had initial discussions with a couple of people about upgrading the forum software here on gd.ie.

We may either pick forum software only or a forum/CMS package.

I am starting this thread to see if people want to point us to some interesting examples or software that we should consider.

      Thanks

      Aphra

Already we are going to look at

      1) Invision Power suite, -IP.Board and IP.Content. Website here: http://www.invisionpower.com.

I set up a forum yesterday using FUDforum (http://fudforum.org/), took about 10 mins to download and install on a CentOS server.

Some friends are currently singing praises of http://vanillaforums.org/

While those both look like great (and free) forum systems, we need something more robust to support the whole community, which basically means that we need to be able to manage a blog and post articles.

Those two forums could be integrated with WordPress, but that’s not an ideal solution.

IP.Board and IP.Content provide an integrated solution for that, such as on GameDev.net: http://www.gamedev.net/page/index.html

So, eh, I like to lurk the boards here and just read the threads to keep on top of what’s happening. But I thought I’d finally register so I could suggest:

      Simple Machines Forum

This is gonna sound like I’m selling it to you, but bear with me! I just want to suggest what I think is the best and why

I’ve used this software on about 3-4 different sites (which are no longer active) and have found it as powerful and flexible as the premium ones like vBulletin. It’s fast, it’s powerful, it’s secure – encrypted passwords unlike the current GD.ie forums – and it’s free.

But the main reason I love it is because of its Server Side Includes (SSI) features. Using the SSI file, you can pretty much have full access to the functionality of the forums from within any other file. Which means you can effectively build your own quick CMS.

      See here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/ssi_examples.php

In the left sidebar, click Website Samples: Sample 1 to get an idea of what I’m talking about. All the examples on that page are being pulled from the official SMF community forum.

Welp… This was a very long post that didn’t even scratch the surface of it all :p

I quite like SMF, and it’s Server Side Includes (SSI) feature is quite cool.

Still, that would require integrating with, or creating, a CMS for the website part of the site.

Some of the commercial solutions, like IP.Board/Content, provide this "out of the box".

By the way, is that you Les?

vbulletin! if it works for boards, it’ll work for us! And it has a lot of extra functionality. It’s paid for, but it’s worth it! We evaluated a load of forum software for Age of Wulin, and it came up trumps. There are also tons of extensions you can get for it.

Should be able to import PHPBB (this forum) according to http://www.v7n.com/forums/forum-management/217933-phpbb3-database-move-vbulletin.html

As for the CMS, probably wordpress would be the best bet, it’s very easy to use and very easy to set up.

As for the CMS, would be happy to show how RadianMx CMS works. I might be good for here or not, it is Irish tech and the team will help out if needed.

      Hi Darkblood,

Do you have a forum or forum integration?

Do you have a demo instance that I can have a look at?

I can get the lads to integrate any forum script you want to use with RadianMx CMS (members, etc), so that will be no problem. We are working on a forums script extension but it’s not ready yet, so anything like vbulletin!, SMF, etc will be fine (also handy to port over the forums data here to something else like it).

I will set you up with with a demo and pm you the details tomorrow to log into it. Still working on the official demo for people to mess around with before downloading.

Not Les, sorry to disappoint! :p

I agree that it can be a bit tedious coding up the site integration, but I was more than happy to do it with SMF because it was free and the community was amazingly helpful.

The IP.Board with IP.Content may be the best solution if you’re willing to pay the money for it as it would pretty much eliminate any time you would spend integrating SSI and creating hooks. Nice and easy :)

I’m just a bit of a hoor for SMF ;)

OK, so if the site & forum cant get upgraded (?) is there anyway the bugs can be fixed. It would be nice to have signatures or the ability to put your real name on your profile. I have no idea who most of the people are on this forum ^__^

pretty please. The government is throwing money into games, how about they send a little love this way and GD.ie can hire a someone to sort all this out…or start gather donations via a big button on the header graphic.

Or maybe lovely Demonware\Digit want to help out with an upgrade? :) :)

we have someone working on it at the moment and a group are in place to transfer over content once the tech is sorted…

it will have all the bells and whistles…or at least some of them.

Maybe Digit games or someone wants to chuck a few Euro towards paying for a couple of hours of someone’s time to upgrade this site?
